ARCTIC Launches MX-7 High Performance Thermal Paste

The world of thermal paste keeps evolving, and I’ve been using Arctic for longer than many of our readers have been alive, but say farewell to MX-6, as ARCTIC is back once again to refine their legendary cooling lineup. ARCTIC has introduced the MX-7, a new thermal paste designed to deliver reliable performance for everything from your classic desktop CPU setup to the more demanding direct die applications found on GPUs, laptops, and water cooling setups.
ARCTIC MX-7
The new MX-7 formula promises to achieve even lower thermal resistance than its predecessor, offering a measurable increase in cooling performance. ARCTIC has stated that the paste features a high cohesiveness which helps prevent the “pump-out” effect during repeated heat cycles, making it ideal for long-lasting stability.

One of the key changes here is the consistency. MX-7 is described as a relatively viscous thermal paste, meaning you should put down the spatula for this one. Instead, ARCTIC recommends letting the contact pressure of the cooler do the work to achieve an even layer thickness, or utilising the “cross method” for application. I know application methods have been a point of debate for decades, but the cross method is well proven for more viscous pastes.
Safety is always a priority with conductive components, and MX-7 is neither electrically conductive nor capacitive, which effectively eliminates the risk of short circuits or discharges if you happen to spill a little… or a lot, on your motherboard.

Performance
According to ARCTIC’s own internal testing, the MX-7 holds a clear advantage over previous generations. In a test scenario using an Intel Core Ultra 9 285K @ 4.5 GHz (284 W), the MX-7 recorded a temperature of 68.0°C. By comparison, the MX-6 sat at 70.3°C, and the older MX-4 at 72.1°C, showing a respectable generation-over-generation improvement.

What We Think
The MX series has long been a staple in the PC building community for its balance of performance and affordability. The shift to a more viscous formula is an interesting move, clearly targeting longevity and pump-out resistance, which is great news for laptop users and GPU repasting where maintenance is less frequent. The performance gap over the MX-6 looks promising on paper, and we are keen to see if those real-world temps hold up on our own test bench, as we’ve just received a box full of the stuff to put to the test!
