ASUSTOR AS4004T 10GbE SOHO NAS Review

A Closer Look at the Device

It is time for us to take a closer look at the device itself. And while it is a budget device, there’s quite a bit to see.

Front Facing Features

Let us start with the front as that’s what you’ll be looking at the most. At the top left corner, we have the power button with all the LEDs arranged below. You get power, activity, network, USB, and individual drive LEDs on the AS4004T.

Below the LEDs, we find a USB 3.0 port with a one-touch copy button.

Rear Facing Features

The rear side is where all the connectors are. Well, except for the front-facing USB port, of course. There is a second USB 3.0 type-A port on the rear, followed by the 10Gbps and two 1Gbps LAN ports. The rest of the rear is covered by the large fan which will help keep everything cool with a minimum of noise generation.

All the way at the bottom is a Kensington security lock to the left while the power plugs in at the right side.

The Power Supply

Speaking of the power, this is the AC/DC adapter which is included. It delivers up to 7.5A at 12V which equals to 90 watts.

The Drive Trays

ASUSTOR’s drive trays are tool-less, allowing you to install or swap drives with ease. Insert the drive, snap the two brackets on, one on each side, and insert the tray into the NAS. There are also screw holes for 2.5-inch drives in the even that you want to install those. This could be SSDs for example. After all, the AS4004T has the power to handle such setups.

If you don’t want to use the tool-less option for your 3.5″ drives, then you won’t have to. You can use screws instead, if you should want to do that.

The Sides

The last thing we take a look at here are the sides. There aren’t any features as such which is why I kept it for last. Still, the NAS design requires that we take a look here. The sides aren’t 100% flat as you’d expect. Instead, they follow the diamond pattern style with a small “dent” towards the rear side. It isn’t a lot and won’t interefere with the setup compared to a purely square box, so it’s nothing to worry about. It’s just a nice extra detail on a product with a theme.
