Atari Plan To Launch Their Own Cryptocurrency

Atari is certainly a company which has seen its fair share of ups and downs. Following their dominance in the 80’s to their disastrous sale to Jack Tramiel, in recent years the company has seen somewhat of a revival.

Following the delay in their upcoming console release, however, Atari has now turned their eyes to cryptocurrencies and plan to launch their own.

Cryptocurrency is a major thing these days. Although, given the recent rollercoaster ride that has been Bitcoin, those wanting to know where to invest can find themselves a bit lost. Atari, it seems, however, are keen to get on this bandwagon and plan to launch their own currency, the Atari Token with an ICO (initial coin offering).

In the announcement via PCGamesN, Frédéric Chesnais, CEO of Atari SA. has said: “Blockchain technology is poised to take a very important place in our environment. To transform, if not revolutionise, the current economic ecosystem. Especially in the areas of the videogame industry and online transactions. Given our technological strengths with the development studio, and the global reputation of the Atari brand, we have the opportunity to position ourselves attractively in this sector. Our objective is to take strategic positions with a limited case risk, in order to optimise the assets and the Atari brand.”

Following the delay of the Atari box (due to further development apparently being necessary) the announcement shows yet another attempt by the company to diversify itself.

Will it be a success?

Well, firstly, we should point out that this isn’t strictly Atari’s cryptocurrency. It is, for want of a better word, a licensing deal which following a partial acquisition of Infinity Networks LTD, would be the base for the coin to launch.

Whether it will be a success or not is unclear. There are, as we mentioned earlier, plenty of alternatives. The bottom line is if you choose to invest in the Atari Brand or the Atari company.
