Battlefield 4 For PC To Be AMD Optimised

Rumours erupted yesterday that EA and AMD had created an agreement that would see all Frostbite 3 engine based titles optimised for AMD hardware. The report was first delivered by IGN and you can see the merit behind the rumour as the next generation of consoles will both be AMD powered and AMD are known to be collaborating strongly with EA to deliver EA games in their Never Settle bundles. Yet that speculation has now been crushed somewhat and it turns out that the AMD-specific optimisation is just for Battlefield 4 on PC only.

AMD will reportedly have exclusive access to pre-launch testing and driver optimisations for Battlefield 4 leaving Nvidia “out in the cold” until the game gets officially released. AMD made a statement which did little to clarify on the true nature of the rumours, naturally they wanted to keep people believing AMD would get exclusive optimisations on all Frostbite 3 games as it is good publicity for them. In a statement made to PCPerspective AMD said the following:

“It makes sense that game developers would focus on AMD hardware with AMD hardware being the backbone of the next console generation. At this time, though, our relationship with EA is exclusively focused on Battlefield 4 and its hardware optimizations for AMD CPUs, GPUs and APUs.”

While EA was quick to step in and comment as to not alienate Nvidia or worry any of its other partners. EA and AMD made the following joint statement:

“DICE has a partnership with AMD specifically for Battlefield 4 on PC to showcase and optimize the game for AMD hardware. This does not exclude DICE from working with other partners to ensure players have a great experience across a wide set of PCs for all their titles.”

What does this all mean at the end of the day then? Well Battlefield 4 on release will be optimised for AMD but EA is still working with Nvidia and other partners. It is a far cry from the early rumour that all Frostbite 3 titles would be AMD optimised, but Battlefield 4 is still quite a big win for AMD.
