Blizzard has finally confirmed a rumour that has been going around for quite some time now: a StarCraft remaster is actually on its way, and the best news is that it will become available by the end of the month. To be more specific, this new version of StarCraft will launch for Windows players on March 30, and it will be preceded by a fresh patch for the classic StarCraft: Brood War client, which will not alter the game’s mechanics in any way. Patch 1.16 came out back in 2009, and it will be replaced by a new 1.18a client, which will allow players to connect to and play against owners of the remastered version.
Furthermore, the original StarCraft Anthology will become completely free after this patch will be applied, and we’re talking about both the single player and multiplayer modes. If you do decide to pay for the remaster, you’ll be able to enjoy the exact same content but with redrawn 2D graphics that can scale up to 4K resolutions and widescreen ratios. However, the redrawn art might not be to everyone’s taste, as some units do tend to look a bit strange when compared to their original counterparts. Another interesting feature will involve zooming in to see the combat up close, or out in order to view the entire battlefield.
