Buffalo Announces 2 and 4-Bay TeraStation 5010 With Built-In 10GbE

Buffalo announced a new NAS series designed to make the entry into 10 Gigabit Ethernet easier and more cost-effective. The new NAS series is called the TeraStation 5010 and consists of three models. There is both a 2-bay and a 4-bay desktop model as well as a 4-bay rackmount model, so there’s an option for both kind of setups. Besides the amount of drive bays, the three NAS devices are pretty much the same on the inside.

The new TeraStation 5010 series is powered by an Annapurna Labs Alpine AL314 1.7 GHz quad-core processor that has been coupled with 4 GB DDR3 ECC RAM that should give you plenty of horsepower for most tasks. The devices all come populated with hard drives as other Buffalo devices and this series can be had with capacities up to 32TB.

Connection wise, they all come with two 1GbE ports that are 2.5Gbps and 5Gbps compatible as well as one 10Gbps network port for even faster networking capabilities. The desktop models feature two USB 3.0 ports for additional storage and extra devices while the rackmount features three USB 3.0 ports. The new series also features a re-designed chassis for better airflow and RAID accelerator for a better performance.

Within the NAS is also a new duplex system firmware boot that ensures the TS5010 is protected from boot failure. With this, the firmware is located on both on the hard drives and on the mainboard, allowing for easy recovery should one fail and the system will still e able to boot and recover the broken firmware. The NAS series comes with useful business-class features such as Active Directory support, disk quota support, share level replication, failover support, and SCSI targeting.

I haven’t had the pleasure to use a Buffalo device in many years myself, so I can’t say much about the OS itself and it’s user friendliness, but considering the amount of time the company has been releasing storage devices, we can assume that it’s quite alright. Buffalo didn’t reveal any pricing at this time.
