Bulldozer FX8150 Review leaked

The FX-8150 is due for official release this week and a Romanian Site has put the processor through it’s paces a few days early. The processor was tested against Intel’s 2600K  which may we mention retails at £240 in comparison to the expected retail price of £180/$280 so the results are hardly a fair comparison but looking at the results we can see the 2600K still has a vast lead and this is significant since the 2500K processor has similar performance to the 2600K and only retails at £150. The first major test of the FX-8150 capabilities is on the 3DMark 11 benchmark where the 2600K reigns supreme both overall where it has about an 8% lead and in Physics where it has about a 30% lead.

Gaming benchmarks don’t look much more promising either, the 8 core Bulldozer is as much as 50% slower than the Quad core 2600K in both HAWX and Resident Evil 5. (Settings used: 1280 x 1024, 8xAA, Maximum details). In HAWX the 2600K is about 50% faster whilst in Resident Evil 5 the 2600K is about 45% faster.

While in Multi-threaded applications the FX8150 does stretch its wings a bit out performing the 2600K by 100% in a SuperPI test and beating the 2600K by 85% on PIFast but realistically most applications do not use 8 cores so in practice the FX8150 will very rarely utilise this lead as shown by the fact it falls down in the “real-world” gaming benchmarks not theoretical benchmarks like 3DMark 11 and SuperPi.

As far as Overclocking is concerned, the FX8150 falls down again as for stock core voltages it can only managed an overclock of about 4.6GHz compared to the 2600K achieving comfortably about 5.1GHz. In Summary it is difficult to see Bulldozer being competitive when in everyday applications it falls down by as much as 10-50%. For the same pricepoint the 2500K outperforms the FX8150 by a substantial margin and the 2600K also does this but is slightly higher priced.
