Bungie Reaches Settlement With Writer Who Accused It of Copyright Infringement on Destiny 2
Last year a writer accused Bungie of copying a number of narrative elements from his works during the creation of Destiny 2. But now the two parties have reached an agreement.
It hasn’t been a good period for Bungie and Destiny 2, but the company can now take a breather after reaching a deal with writer Matthew Martineau and resolving a year-long copyright lawsuit.
We recall that last year Martineau filed a lawsuit against the video game company for possible copyright violation, claiming Bungie had plagiarised various narrative elements from his works. Bungie tried to block the lawsuit immediately but, surprisingly, the case went ahead and reached the court.
Terms and Court Order
The case has now been closed and will not go to trial: “The court having been advised that all parties have firmly agreed upon a compromise in this matter; it is ordered that this action be and is hereby dismissed as to all parties, without costs and without prejudice to the right, upon good cause shown, within sixty days, to reopen the action if the settlement is not consummated,” reads the order.
“In addition, the court specifically retains jurisdiction to enforce the settlement agreement if settlement is not consummated within sixty days.”
There are no details on the agreement, but we assume Bungie and Matthew Martineau agreed on a monetary compensation to resolve the matter.
In other news, Bungie is issuing Steam refunds for Destiny 2 after the game became inaccessible in several restricted territories.
