Bungie Says Marathon Won’t Be Destiny 3: Not For ‘Destiny Players Who Aren’t Interested in PvP’
In an interview with GamesRadar, Joe Ziegler, the game director of Marathon, shared some thoughts about how players who enjoy Destiny might feel about this new first-person shooter. He explained that there are “some differences” between the two games, and while there are “some barriers,” the developers are working to make them smoother.
At the same time, Ziegler pointed out that there are elements in Marathon that make it so different from Destiny that the team cannot change them.
If You Like Destiny, Marathon Might Not Be For You
Ziegler explained: “I think part of it is we don’t expect Marathon to become Destiny 3. Our goal is not to basically make a new product that replaces Destiny 2.”
“We believe that Destiny 2 has a future,” he added. “The team working on it has been working really hard to understand what players’ needs are. But if you like Destiny, and you happen to like a lot of PvP sandbox experiences, and those are other games that you play, then we think that that Marathon could be something very exciting for you.”
He also explained that Destiny players may have “a certain advantage” in Marathon because the weapon systems tend to be a bit similar, but there are enough changes to make you relearn how to play.
Marathon Is Not For PvE Fans
However, Ziegler warned that if you’re a Destiny player who isn’t interested in PvP (Player vs Player) gameplay, Marathon probably isn’t the game for you. “At some point, someone else who is a player is gonna come across you and shoot you,” he said.
“I think if you are only looking for PvE experiences, definitely Marathon is not the game for you,” he continued. “We are very comfortable saying, yeah, this isn’t a game for everybody. This is a game for: if you like PvP experiences, especially in sandbox spaces.”
