CD Projekt RED Reveals The Witcher 1 & 2 Sold Over 25 Million Copies Combined
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt may have been CD Projekt RED’s breakthrough hit, but its predecessors performed far better than many expected. Thanks to a new update from the studio’s co-CEO, Michał Nowakowski, we now know just how well the first two games sold — and the numbers are impressive.
The Witcher and The Witcher 2 Together Sold 25 Million Copies
According to Nowakowski (thanks ComicBook), the first two entries in The Witcher series have collectively sold 25 million copies worldwide — a strong performance for games released long before the franchise became a global phenomenon.
Breaking it down, the original The Witcher sold 10 million copies, while The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings reached 15 million copies. Many of these sales likely came years after their release, as fans of The Witcher 3 sought to explore the origins of Geralt’s story.
These figures highlight how the franchise had already built a solid following even before the third game’s record-breaking success.
While the first two games did remarkably well, they’re still dwarfed by The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which has sold over 60 million copies to date, bolstered by multiple editions and expansions.
Nevertheless, the strong performance of the earlier titles shows just how much momentum CD Projekt RED had built before The Witcher 3 became a global hit.
In related news, CD Projekt Red has admitted feeling strong pressure both inside and outside the company as they work on The Witcher 4, especially when it comes to surpassing the legacy of the earlier games in the series.
