CD Projekt Red’s Stolen Source Code Starts to Leak Online!

Earlier this week we reported on the frankly quite shocking news that not only had CD Projekt Red been subjected to a severe cyberattack, but as part of it, the source code for pretty much all of their major gaming releases had been successfully stolen. Now, in fairness, CD Projekt Red themselves confirmed that this had happened and, more so, that they categorically were not going to enter into any negotiations with the hackers regarding any form of ‘ransom’ payments.

Following a report via Videocardz, however, it would appear that the group (or individual) responsible for this hack has now started to post some of the information they obtained online!

CD Projekt Red Source Code Hack!

Following the publication of data uploaded to Mega.nz (which has since been removed) it was found that the entire source code for ‘Gwent’ (the standalone version of the card game featured in The Witcher 3) was posted online. Likely merely done to represent ‘proof’ of their success, as this isn’t exactly the most important data in their possession, it has since transpired that the hackers are now attempting to auction off the source code data for the other games compromised in the leak. This includes; The Witcher 3, an unreleased version of The Witcher 3 (which would now appear to be a ray tracing update), and, of course, Cyberpunk 2077.

What Will Happen Now?

The auction is (apparently) already live and will end 48-hours after the most recent bid has been placed. Of course, though, CD Projekt Red is still being given the option to pay the ransom themselves, but it still seems more than likely that they are going to (quite rightly) refuse to do this. Make no bones about it though, this is very serious news for the developer and, with there now being some concrete proof that the hack was successful, it’s genuinely difficult to know just how significant an impact this will make on them if more of that source code does escape into the wild!
