Officially certified as an 80-Plus Bronze power supply, we would start by freely admitting that, by today’s (thankfully hugely improved) standards, this is about the minimum level of performance most consumers should be looking towards in their PSU designs. – Despite this relatively benign official rating, however, our testing found that the Chietronic Power Steel performed massively beyond that remit.
As you can see in our results below, it achieved an average of around 90% efficiency which, on the whole, places this far closer to ‘Silver’ and, in many respects, nearly tiptoeing into ‘Gold’ territory. – So, in other words, despite the bronze rating, this performs much better than it has any right to. This is definitely a positive for consumers as if this was officially Gold rated, you could easily expect to see another £20-£30 thrown onto the price tag!
Although starting off quite low at 20% load, which is perfectly normal for practically every power supply, the moment you ask the Chieftronic Steel Power to work a bit harder, the numbers very quickly ramp up. Although the maximum score of 0.972 is not the highest we have ever encountered, it is still a very impressive score and clearly indicates that the PFC levels are, on the whole, excellent!
Overall, consistency is undoubtedly the king here. While the 12V rail did provide us with mildly high scores, they were still well within acceptable remits and, as you can see in our chart below, amazingly tight no matter what load output we tested. The 3.3V and 5V rails were practically perfect, and although there were definitely some odd results in the -12V testing, given the low importance of this rail in modern PSU design, we don’t see any cause for concern here!
