China Developed GPU on Par With Nvidia GTX 1080 Tapes Out!

It’s been well-known for more than a few years now that the Chinese government has been rather keen on entering form of self-sufficiency when it comes to PC hardware products. Simply, they no longer want to rely on companies like AMD, Nvidia, and Intel, so they’ll produce these technologies from their own country. While their processor designs seem to be coming along pretty well, there hasn’t been much news about their graphics card designs.

Following a report via Videocardz, however, Chinese manufacturer Jingjia Micro has reportedly completed development on its JM9271 GPU, and more so, they’re claiming that in terms of performance, it should be on par with the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080.

China Home-Grown GPUs Take On Big Step Closer to Release!

Now, admittedly, the Nvidia 1080, while once a fantastic graphics card, is nothing close to being still considered a market leader among Western consumers. Make no bones about it though, even by today’s gaming standards, the 1080 is no slouch. In fact, based on benchmark results, it holds the pretty impressive status of being (despite being over 5 years and 2 generations old) the 31st ‘strongest’ GPU out there. – When you take into consideration that this will, pretty much, represent Jingjia Micro’s first swing at a gaming GPU, and more so the fact that it’s only been in development for around 2 years, it’s not a bad start at all!

And, for those of you unaware of what the term ‘taping out’ means, with the design phase now concluded this graphics card is now imminently set to hit (presumably mass) production lines for a widespread (but presumably Chinese internal) release!

What Do We Think?

Given the nature of Chinese manufacturing (and their comparative relationship with Western manufacturers), I don’t think it would be unfair to say, particularly based on past experiences, that it’s entirely possible that Jingjia Micro might be overinflating the performance figures seen here. If this is proven accurate, however, it shows that China is very serious about its PC hardware drive and, who knows, they might be able to offer the world something new in the future.

Based on the aforementioned CPU development though, it does appear that in terms of technology, and taking these GPU specifications into account, that China is around 4-5 years behind the ‘cutting edge’ of development here in the West. Remember though, China only started this initiative around 3 years ago. And pretty much from a standing start. Presuming that these truly are proprietary designs (meaning that they’re truly new and not simply continuing the semi-tradition of just ripping off other people’s ideas) it seems entirely possible that China could very well succeed based on this promising start here. And who knows, they might even hold a PC hardware technological parity with the West before the end of the decade.
