Chinese Audience Makes Up 50% of Steam’s User Base
Steam, the popular gaming platform, now has half of its users from China. Valve recently released the latest Hardware & Software Survey for the platform (thanks Automaton), showing that the number of Chinese-language users has grown by 20.88% as of February 2025. This massive jump has brought the total percentage of Chinese users to 50.06%, up from 29.18% in January. In comparison, the percentage of English-language users on Steam in February 2025 was 23.79%.
Strong Growth in Chinese Users
It’s common for the number of Chinese users on Steam to increase during February because of the Chinese New Year (holidays usually lead to a rise in users across different regions). However, this year, the growth was much higher than usual.
For instance, during the Christmas period, the percentage of English-language users reached 42.14%. In previous years, the increase during Chinese New Year was much smaller, often around 10% or less. In February 2024, there was a 7.26% increase in Chinese users.
The 2025 growth has been exceptional. One of the main reasons for this surge could be the success of Black Myth: Wukong, developed by Game Science. The game sold 20 million copies in just two months, becoming a huge hit in China.
As more big-name games from China appear, it’s no surprise that many Chinese players are flocking to Steam, where they can buy both new and older titles.
