Clair Obscur Developers Say Their Next Game Will Follow Instinct, Not Fan Demands

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was a major success, and fans are eager to know what the development team will work on next. However, according to recent comments from the creators, the studio plans to “trust its instincts” rather than follow the wishes of its fanbase.

Following Instinct Over Expectations

In an interview with Edge, game director François Meurisse revealed that the studio, Sandfall, already has “some great ideas” it is “excited to explore.” He emphasized that the team is not starting “from the same point” it was when it began work on Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

“The team already has five more years of experience,” Meurisse said. “So maybe we can do some great stuff.”

Jennifer Svedberg-Yen, the lead writer of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, added that she is naturally someone who likes to meet others’ expectations. She admitted it’s hard not to think about the fans and their feelings toward the game, but she emphasized that the team’s creative “north star” will always be its personal taste and vision — what they find “cool” and what they truly love creating.

“I’ve seen too many TV shows and books be swayed trying to please a lot of people,” Svedberg-Yen explained. “So [we] feel like we need to trust our instincts and continue to trust the vision behind the studio.”

The developers seem determined to maintain their artistic independence, even after success has brought them a large and passionate fanbase. While Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 received praise, some players criticized certain level designs. Yet, the team remains focused on creativity and self-expression rather than catering to all expectations.

Lastly, it’s worth noting that the Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 team has stated they are not planning to expand for their next games.
