Compulsion Games’ We Happy Few to Get Movie Adaptation

Hollywood is always on the lookout for that hot new property that they can turn into a multi-movie franchise. Comic books have been a reliable source of this for the past decade now and video games are quickly catching up as well. Unfortunately many video game adaptations either fail to be adopted faithfully but can still be a success such as the Resident Evil franchise or just fail in the box office entirely such as the latest Assassin’s Creed movie. Thankfully, that has not slowed down Hollywood from attempting again as the upcoming Tomb Raider movie reboot shows, with Alicia Vikander playing the role of a young Lara Croft adapted directly from the 2013 title relaunch.

The latest news from tinsel-town however involves an unlikely property considering it is not as popular or as big as other video games: Compulsion Games’ We Happy Few. Don’t get me wrong, the story and art direction is one of the most original in recent years, but Hollywood tends to favor ‘safe’ choices and choose to adopt games that have been around for a while such as the case with Tomb Raider, Assassin’s Creed and Resident Evil. Variety reports that the We Happy Few adaptation is being adopted by Gold Circle entertainment who produced Pitch Perfect (2012) and dj2 entertainment who is producing the upcoming Sleeping Dogs movie adaptation and co-producing a Sonic the Hedgehog movie adaptation.

“Our commitment is to make a movie that remains true to the source material, while still surprising fans,” according to dj2 Entertainment CEO Dmitri M. Johnson, who Compulsion Games said was enthusiastic and had really solid ideas about how to adapt the game already in their meeting. The project is currently looking for writers to helm the script.
