It’s an absolute war out there, especially in the world of mobile phones, with tech giants going head to head and trying to get the upper hand in the market thanks to some new feature or other on their phone. Today, we’re looking at the new iPhone 7 and the heavyweight from Samsung, the Galaxy S7 Edge. How do they size up against each other? Let’s find out.

iPhone 7

Although there have been changes to the phone, the iPhone 7 phone has remained consistent in its design. It’s pretty much the same as a couple of years ago, preserving innovative features of then like 3D Touch. This has led many tech lovers to rubbish this new phone as any kind of meaningful step up from the iPhone S6.

The changes they have made to the design have been bold, however. Doing away with the headphone jack is a brave step that could rub loyal iPhone users up completely the wrong way, or have them just shrugging their shoulders with a ‘meh, whatever’. It all depends on your headphones and where you’d normally plug them into the phone, either allowing you to plug your Ear Pods into the Ear Box, or forcing you to attach a dongle to your earphones into them. That’s inconvenient.

The other big change is the waterproofing, which lends thickness to the phone and ease of mind for users. Then there’s the screen itself. Apple have been working on the screen, improving the brightness and crispness of the graphics, although the screen is still a little less sharp than some of its counterparts in the tech world. That’s partly because Apple are particularly concerned with the feel-good element in their phone design, about how the phone feels in your hand.

The Galaxy S7 Edge is a handsome little phone, with its curved screen, a feature which Samsung is incorporating more and more into its models. In fact, Samsung have gone all out, forcing the operating system to take a step back (either in respect or appreciation at the elegance!). The company has come a long way where design is concerned.

The phone has gotten a head start on the iPhone 7 and already gone down the waterproof route. Note that this is more of a safety feature, in case you drop your phone in a puddle or something like that, rather than a phone for taking scuba diving and snapping away at marine life.

The company behind the S7 Edge have learned how to do an upgrade that will delight users. The screen is bigger, yet it doesn’t feel so in the hand, thus not complicating usage when it comes to holding the handset. In part, this is because the back of the screen is curved as well, allowing to sit pleasantly in the palm of the hand. It almost feels like a pebble. The super AMOLED technology, in which Samsung is something of an old hand, really adds some spark to the colors, giving the display a real premium feel.

The iPhone 7 has some serious contention on its hands from the Galaxy S7 Edge, but if you don’t fancy either, you can check out the different offerings from the mobile technology world and their prices online and see if any suit you better. In the world of mobile phones, one thing is for sure: Samsung is a company that is going from strength to strength. Apple might just have to watch out.
