Corsair Neutron 240GB Solid State Drive Review

Looking through our test results, the results are right up at a top grade level when compared to the likes of a SandForce based drive, the benefits are also seen in other areas with the capability of handling both compressible and incompressible data with no problems at all. Introducing a new controller onto the market can be a shady area and the initial uptake can be a little slow, however with it being adopted and introduced through the channels of a big name such as Corsair, there is good hope that there is, in the long run, going to be another strong controller out there to take on the dominant player alongside the likes of Indlinx.

We do acknowledge that there may some tweaks and improvements that will occur down the line to improve the controller and the drive as a whole, but as it is now, the Neutron series of drives have got off to a great start, stirring the hornets nest of drives on the market.

If you’re considering this drive and would love for a little more performance, the watch this space as we are hoping to take a look at the Neutrons bigger brother, the Neutron GTX, which should see faster read and write speeds if its raw speed that you look for. That aside, the pricing for a new style of drive that offers up good performance along with synchronous memory and a known name is really good with off the shelf costs at around the £160 mark (a mere ~66p/GB).

Bottom line, we know that a number of people are going to be cautious about the new controller and its unproven reliability further down the line, but with a 5 year warranty, introduction into the market via a well known and trusted brand – Corsair, compatibility with ultra slim notebooks and a competitive price point, I’m happy to give this new design of drive our innovation award.
