Creative SoundBlasterX G6 Desktop Amplifier Review

How Much Does it Cost?

The Sound BlasterX G6 7.1 HD Gaming DAC and External USB Sound Card with Xamp Headphone Amplifier for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC is available from many major retailers. It’s priced at £129.99, which is a lot, but you’re getting a quality product with some very powerful processing and features.

Overview

Creative has been one of the leading names of PC audio for as long as I can remember. My first ever PC had a Creative soundcard, I’ve had the same Creative T20 speakers on my desk for about 10 years, my damn headphones are Creative too. I may seem like a bit of a fan boy, but honestly, they’re just what suit my needs best right now. For four years I was using Turtle Beach headphones before these, and Astro before those. Right now though, Creative seem to be top of their game, and I think they have one of the best audio ecosystems out there right now. From mobile to desktop and beyond.

Build Quality

It’s an expensive product, so you would expect it to look and feel like one. I’m happy to report it does. It’s got a good weight to it, not so much you wouldn’t want to travel with it, but it feels like it’ll last a lifetime of knocks and bumps. The buttons and dial have a nice high-end hi-fi feel to them too. I like the thick rubber on the base too, it protects the device and your desktop surface.

Performance

It’s absolutely fantastic, it really is. Even those not really into their audio will hear a noticeable improvement. The dynamic range and power of the amp is impressive and it really just gives everything a lift. The mighty EQ is great too, and the dials for adjusting voice clarity, bass, etc, make huge differences, but the built-in profiles make things easy for the novice.

Should I Buy One?

It’s not something everyone needs, but it’s one of those products that once you’ve used it, you won’t want to go back. You don’t realise what you’re missing in your audio until it is taken away. If you want to get everything your headphones have to offer, benefit from the advanced microphone processing and take control of your mixing and monitoring, the G6 is an exceptional piece of hardware.

So it's no wonder I write about tech and test the latest hardware while I enjoy my hobbies!
