CXMT Begins Trial Production of Its First LPDDR6 Memory Chips at 12.8 Gbps

The race to lead the next generation of mobile memory has gained another competitor. Chinese memory maker CXMT has started trial production of its first LPDDR6 memory chips. With this step, the company has reached the same stage of technical development and manufacturing as industry leaders Samsung, SK hynix, and Micron.

The company is already sending its first test samples to customers for validation. This stage is used to check the stability and performance of the chips before mass production begins. If the testing process is successful, large-scale manufacturing could start within the next few weeks or months.

The first LPDDR6 chips from CXMT deliver transfer speeds of up to 12.8 Gbps. This is higher than the base LPDDR6 specification of 10.7 Gbps. That speed was previously the maximum achieved by LPDDR5X through extreme overclocking. Each chip has a capacity of 16 Gb, equal to 2 GB of memory per package.

The chips use a Package-on-Package (PoP) design with a BGA connection layout that includes around 1,295 pins. While competitors such as SK hynix have already announced LPDDR6 solutions capable of reaching 14.4 Gbps using its sixth-generation 10 nm 1c process, CXMT’s chips comfortably meet the specifications approved by JEDEC.

CXMT, officially known as ChangXin Memory Technologies, was founded in May 2016 in Hefei, China, with strong government support. After launching its first DDR4 memory products in 2019, the company grew into the largest DRAM producer in China and the fourth largest in the world by shipment volume.

Its memory products are supplied to global technology brands including Lenovo, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and Honor. At the same time, companies such as Samsung, SK hynix, and Micron have shifted more of their attention toward VRAM and memory for AI data centers, creating more room in the consumer memory market.

CXMT has taken advantage of that opportunity by expanding its portfolio with LPDDR5X, DDR5, and HBM memory products, strengthening its presence across PCs, mobile devices, and servers.
