Dane-Elec My Ditto 1TB NAS Review

Out of the box, we a re presented with a clean and slim looking system in an all white body. We are finding that a growing number of home devices are being offered in white as it doesn’t have the same intrusive feel as black devices can have. The system easily sits on the plastic stand giving it extra stability.

Working down the front of the system, the front is all about keeping everything simple, yet informative at the same time. A column of seven blue LEDs indicate drive connection, system status, power and LAN activity. Below these are two buttons for setting up new secure access keys, which we will look at later on. Right at the bottom there is one of two USB ports for connecting either the secure keys or other USB storage devices.

Turning the system around, we find the two drive bays on the back, allowing for the sleek looks on the front and sides. Running down the side of the trays, there is a on/off rocker switch, the second USB2.0 port, DC jack and Gigabit LAN.

As this is a preconfigured device, complete with drives, its worth seeing what storage medium is of choice. In each of the drive trays we find a Samsung HD501LJ 500GB 7200rpm drive, which together make up the 1TB of storage available on this model. Other SKU’s of the MyDitto include drive combinations upto a massive 4TB in total.

Finally on the base of the unit, we find a small grill behind which is a fan to keep the unit and drives cool during operation.

Moving on to the USB keys, as we highlighted before, there are two keys that come included with the system. Both of these will allow for remote access to the system, the only keys difference lies within the master keys that also allows for full administrative access to the MyDitto system from any system whilst the white keys only allow for file access. Additional keys can be purchased for the system in pairs, and utilising the two buttons on the front of the system, they can be authenticated to a particular NAS. Another feature on the keys allows for access to a private folder that is individual to each key.
