DDR5 Prices Surge Up to 300% as AI Demand Strains Global Supply
The price of DDR5 memory has skyrocketed, tripling in just three months. This surge, driven by the intense demand from major tech companies for their data centers and artificial intelligence infrastructures, is causing a global shortage of DRAM memory modules and influencing consumer buying decisions.
Why DDR5 Prices Are Rising So Fast
Major memory manufacturers such as Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron have prioritized the production of HBM and LPDDR5X chips for the AI sector. As a result, the production capacity for consumer-grade DDR5 modules has decreased.
The direct consequence is that DDR5 kits, which cost around $140 in September 2025, now exceed $300, with price increases of over 100% in some cases.
AM4 Platform Makes a Comeback
Amid these inflated prices, older platforms—especially AMD’s AM4 socket—are experiencing a comeback. The AM4 platform, which uses DDR4 memory, remains more stable in price and widely available, making it a more attractive and budget-friendly option right now.
Users looking for solid performance without paying for a new motherboard or expensive DDR5 kits are turning to Ryzen 5000 processors. Even Intel’s 13th and 14th-generation Core processors with DDR4-compatible motherboards are great options right now.
Upgrading to one of these chips is far cheaper than switching to the new AM5 platform (which requires DDR5) or Intel’s latest offerings. Performance-wise, DDR4 still holds up well in gaming, and the performance gap between DDR4 and DDR5 does not justify the huge price difference.
At the moment, AM4 platforms are at their sweet spot. The choice is clear: either go with AM4 or wait until DDR5 prices stabilize—something unlikely to happen anytime soon.
