Death Stranding Hits 5M Sales – Not Bad For a Game No One Seemed to Like!

Death Stranding

When Death Stranding was originally released on the PS4 in late 2019, although the critical reception was massively positive for it, the fan reception did, at least from my perspective, seem to be a little mixed. Put simply, some loved it, and others absolutely hated it. And, in truth, I can entirely understand both sides of that argument. – For me personally, I waited until the PC release in mid-2020 to find out for myself, and, I say without any reservation whatsoever, that it was quite possibly the best game I played that year.

Just how well did Kojima Productions‘ first independent title do though? Well, following a report via GamesIndustry, they have just confirmed that between the PC and PS4 release, Death Stranding has just achieved over 5 million sales! – Not bad for a game that the community couldn’t seem to agree on!

Death Stranding

While it has taken a while to hit the 5 million mark, it should be noted that based on the overall ‘marmite’ aspect of the gameplay, many wondered whether Death Stranding was actually going to end up being a success or not. In that regard, however, it’s clearly abundant now that while this game might not have been for all, it has still managed to find a huge audience. And presumably, one that has appreciated the narrative style and graphical glory it represented.

Following an official announcement from Kojima Productions, however, they have (perhaps indicative of their Japanese origins) been mildly understated about it:

“With Death Stranding being the first title developed out of Kojima Productions, from a sales perspective, it has performed quite well. As of March 2021, Death Stranding has sold through over five million units worldwide on PlayStation 4 and PC.”

Next-Gen Upgrade!

Set to release in September, you may be aware that Death Stranding is currently finalising the development of its next-gen upgrade that should see this amazing title already on the PS4, look even more fantastic on the PS5. The only apparent downside is that there will be a $10 fee to upgrade your existing version. At the time of writing, however, it remains unclear as to what the situation will be regarding the PC version.

If you haven’t played Death Stranding yet, however, and want to see what all the fuss is about, you can check out the official Steam product website via the link here! – You might want to wait until the next sale, however, as at the time of writing, it’s a little expensive in my opinion!
