Desert Bus for Hope – The gaming marathon charity event is currently underway and celebrating its 11th year of fundraising!

What’s the worst game you’ve ever played? Superman 64? Big Rigs? Aliens Colonial Marines? If these are on your list then it’s likely that you’ve never played Desert Bus. That’s no slight on your gaming knowledge as it was never officially released.

While you might currently be screaming at EA about Battlefront 2, at least consider that at the moment in gaming, some do have it worse than you.

Forming part of a planned Penn and Teller game, Desert Bus was featured as a minigame. The game required you to drive a bus from Tuscon to Las Vegas. That’s about it. Driving at about 45mph and encountering nothing other than an occasional bug hitting your screen. If at this point you don’t get what the fuss is about, then let me fill you in.

A gruelling gaming experience

In the journey, firstly, it’s played out in real-time. Yes, you will literally be simulating the drive in the exact same amount of time it would take you to do it for real. Taking about 8 hours to make the trip, if the boredom doesn’t get you, a hideous and deliberate mechanic will.

The bus, throughout the journey, veers ever so slightly to the left. If you go off the road, it’s game over. You get towed back to the beginning, which is also in real time.

Your achievement in reaching your destination? A point. Yes, one singular point. You can, therefore, appreciate that this is a chore and hard work. A worthy bit of masochism to raise money for charity. Sure, they could pick great games, such as the 2017 Golden Joystick winners, but where’s the challenge in that?
