Have The Developers Of Shadow of Mordor Stolen Code From Assassin’s Creed II?

Charles Randall has taken to Twitter to voice his concerns about the latest title in the Lord of the Rings series, calling out the developers for stealing assets from Assassin’s Creed II, a game which he helped develop. On his twitter Randall said “Check it out guys! I apparently made a Middle Earth game!”.

What initially seemed to be a light joke on Twitter was soon revealed to be a bigger concern as he went on to say “Seriously, can someone tell me how Assassin’s Creed 2 code and assets are in the Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor game?”. Randall linked to the debut trailer for the new game in which he believes he tell the game is using code and animations from Assassin’s Creed II.

He did say he realises that he has no legal claim to his work, but does hope that he will at least be acknowledged in the game’s credits since they’ve used his work. Many users were quick to point out that the combat and air assassination animations in question were similar to that of Batman: Arkham games more than Assassin’s Creed, but Randall was quick to respond “I spent two years staring at AC2. I know it when I see it.” He has a point.

Not to be misunderstood, Randall has a lot of enthusiasm for the new game, and there is currently no word on if he is correct in his claims, but we’ve no reason to doubt his keen eye. Monolith Productions haven’t really done anything wrong, so long as credit is given, or permission has been asked from the owners of the game engine in Assassin’s Creed (Ubisoft).
