Dino PC T-Rex 7990 System Review

Final Thoughts

Lets start things off by taking a look at the components used in this build. The chassis is made by Corsair and therefore gives you instant build quality and style, and with us having looked at the Vengeance C70 in the past, we can wholeheartedly recommend it, and are glad that Dino PC have opted to go with this particular choice, especially in Arctic White, as if you didn’t know by now; white is the new black. The power supply is made by XFX and is part of their pro series of which we’ve looked at the 750W version recently, and were extremely pleased with it. Other key components include the Gigabyte Z87X-UD4H which is refreshing to see with its new colour scheme and design; something we highlighted on when we reviewed it back in June. Corsair memory gives you another bandwidth for the most extreme tasks and with an SSD/HDD combination, you’ll be greeted with both speed and capacity for the most extreme gamers. Speaking of gaming, at the heart of this mammoth rig, we find the XFX Radeon HD 7990 dual core GPU monster, which while we found to be a bit noisy, is an absolute beast and will play any game, even at 2560×1600 with the highest settings enabled.

A downside in my opinion is the inclusion of Windows 8, but we can’t dwell on this, as when customizing, you always have the option of plumping for Windows 7 instead, especially if you share the views of the majority of enthusiasts when it comes to Windows 8 and its many issues.

The system came pre-overclocked to 4.3GHz and for the majority of consumers and extreme gamers; this is going to be more than enough, and while we believe more can be squeezed out of the system, the heat of the 7990 isn’t going to be helping the situation and Dino PC opted for a modest overclock while not seeing temperatures raise to high, as we saw on the previous pages. Overall, acoustics were fairly low, especially considering the hardware used, and thinking back to a time when the predecessor 6990 sounded like a NASA rocket launch setting off for its journey.

Price wise, the system sits at £1 short of the £2000 price point, and while this may seem expensive, a large chunk of it has been taken up by the sheer cost of the 7990 from XFX, though with recent price cuts, we’d be interested to see if this impacts the pricing structure from Dino PC, but even still, it does offer a competitive price for the market when looking at similar systems from other brands.

This system can be tweaked to the consumers specifications, and that is one of the joys of buying from Dino PC. If you need a slightly different motherboard or more memory, you have the facility to do it before you even press the buy button.

Build quality is a major aspect when buying a pre-built system and the overall build quality of the machine is where we expect it to be. Sadly our Radeon 7990 came separate to the machine, whereas other brands such as PC Specialist install the card and pack it with specialist foam, but as ours is a review sample, this may be different for the end-user system. The reason that I mention this is down to the fact of consumers are buying a pre-built system, and therefore may not know about building, hence coming to a brand like Dino PC, and having to install the graphics card themselves takes away from that slightly. You also get the 3 year SureCare warranty as standard, while competitors sometimes only offer a 1 year warranty, putting Dino PC at the forefront of customer care in our opinion.

Performance across the board was extremely good and at the top of its game thanks to the processor and GPU combination, as well as the pre-factory overclock that Dino PC tweaked on the machine.

Overall, I can recommend this system to anyone looking for the best of the best, but while the 7990 is the top chief when it comes to dual-GPU graphics cards, for the most part, the majority of consumers will find it overkill, but with the option of being able to customise for your own needs, you have the choice of changing the graphics solution around a bit.

eTeknix says: The Dino PC T-Rex 7990 system really does offer extreme performance, and for a competitive price point and the ability to customize the options for your desired needs, it offers everything that you’d expect from a pre-built system and with a 3 year warranty, you know you’ll be covered in every eventuality.
