Gaming Performance

Grand Theft Auto V

Despite Grand Theft Auto V being a few years old, it’s still a potent test of GPU performance across different hardware configurations. Interestingly, the system’s processor appears to be a limiting factor and results in a lower frame-rate than other products utilising the i7-6700K. To be fair, it’s not a huge problem because the average frame-rate is well above 120 and enough to please even the most demanding of users.

Once the resolution is increased to 2560×1440, the performance deficit appears to diminish and remain within an acceptable distance of the top result. The 126 frames-per-second average is marvellous when you consider the demanding preset. During 4K testing, the system performed admirably and maintained an average above 60. Saying that, you’re likely to encounter pretty hefty frame drops in demanding sections and I’d recommend scaling back the settings slightly. Nevertheless, it’s a strong showing and illustrates the viability of 4K gaming on this particular system.

Rise of the Tomb Raider

During the Rise of the Tomb Raider benchmark, the system performed exceedingly well and easily coped with the game’s strenuous lighting effects. When paired with a 1920×1080 monitor, the average frame-rate remains very consistent and almost reaches the 150 range. After the resolution was set to 2560×1440, the system worked its magic to record the first result beyond 100 frames-per-second. As expected, the GTX 1080 doesn’t quite have enough horsepower to drive a 4K screen at the Very High preset while maintaining 60 frames-per-second. However, the final figure isn’t too far away and you should be able to enjoy a great 4K experience with reduced settings.

Hitman

The performance data in Hitman is intriguing and there’s a greater variation throughout the results than you might expect. Perhaps, this stems from driver updates or patches which dramatically alter the game’s optimisation. Whatever the case, it’s clear that the system’s graphics hardware doesn’t encounter any issues running the game on the Ultra preset providing you stick to either a 1920×1080 or 2560×1440 render. Once the resolution is adjusted to 4K, the frame-frame tends to drop quite often, leading to a jarring user experience. It’s certainly playable, but I’d advise lowering the settings once again.

Far Cry Primal

Here we can see there’s almost nothing to choose between a wide range of systems which use various versions of the GTX 1080. During 1080p testing, the frame-rate is extremely stable and high enough to please someone with a high-refresh monitor. After increasing the display resolution to 2560×1440, the minimum frame-rate stays above 60 while the average hits 80. In a similar vein to the other games, the 4K resolution proves too taxing and results in a frame-rate under 60.
