Direct X 11.2 Will Be Xbox One And Windows 8.1 Exclusive

Microsoft has just announced at the Build Developers Conference in San Francisco  that the next version of Direct X, which will be called Direct X 11.2, is going to be an Xbox One and Windows 8.1 exclusive according to Softpedia. Microsoft elaborate on all the technical details within the video below but the main feature of this new Direct X update is that it has something called “tiled resources” which allows for improved textures within video games. Given that the Xbox One is going to pack a serious amount of RAM these extra textures can of course be supported on new generation consoles.

Furthermore, in a similar tactic to Windows Vista, Microsoft is making Direct X 11.2 available only on Windows 8.1 – another tactic to try and get Windows 7 users to upgrade to their latest operating systems. Microsoft didn’t disclose when we can expect to see the new technology implemented but presumably game developers will get or already have access to this new tool and will begin developing games with it in time for the Xbox One release in November later on this year.
