Discord Rolls Out New Safety Defaults for Teens

Discord

Discord is attempting to make a major push to bolster safety for its younger user base by launching “Teen-by-Default” settings on a global scale. Recognising that the platform is a hub for gaming communities, the company is shifting the responsibility of privacy away from the user and onto the system itself.

The update ensures that new and existing users under the age of 18 are automatically placed into more restrictive privacy tiers. This move aims to curb unsolicited contact and ensure that the gaming experience remains focused on friends rather than strangers.

Key Safety Features

  • Restricted Direct Messaging: DMs from non-friends are automatically blocked for teen accounts.
  • Sensitive Content Filters: Discord’s “Safety Alerts” and media filters are turned on by default to blur potentially inappropriate images.
  • Server Safety: Enhanced protections to limit how strangers can interact with younger users within large public communities.
  • Simplified Parental Tools: Improved visibility for parents via the Family Center to monitor (but not read) their teen’s activity.

Tell Me More

These changes aren’t just for new sign-ups; Discord is retroactively applying these settings to existing accounts identified as belonging to teenagers. The “Teen-by-Default” initiative is part of a broader “Safety by Design” philosophy, ensuring that privacy isn’t an “opt-in” luxury but a standard requirement for minors.

While some users might find the stricter filters a bit overzealous, they can be adjusted, though Discord will provide “educational “nudges” to ensure the user understands the risks of lowering their guard.

What We Think

Discord has often been criticised for being a bit of a “Wild West” when it comes to moderation, so hard-coding these protections for teens sounds like a good idea in theory. But it’s only been 3-4 months since Discord had a massive data breach where 70,000 users’ information was leaked, so it’s going to be pretty hard for people to trust the platform.

Where to Find It

The new settings are rolling out globally across the Discord desktop, web, and mobile clients starting this week. If you or your family members fall into the teen bracket, expect to see a notification regarding these privacy shifts next time you log in.
