Elpida Starting Sample Shipments of 32Gb LRDIMM

Elpida, Japans market leader of Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM), has announced that it is about to start shipping samples of its all new 32Gb Load Reduced Dual In-Line Memory Modules (LRDIMM).

They are claiming this to be the DRAM industry’s highest density memory modules, packing 72 of their advanced 40nm 4Gbit DDR3 SDRAMs into a double density package, that they are hoping wil become the new standard for server orientated memory modules.

The LRDIMM is set to reduce the I/O bus capacity by buffering the I/O bus line along with the memory buffer to acheive faster speeds and also acheive a far greater system density.

Current conventional Registered DIMM (RDIMM), currently only allows upto 16 DIMMs in a 2-way server environment, whereas the LRDIMM will allow for upto 24 modules in the same system. Elpida claim that with a full population of 24 of its 32Gb LRDIMMs in a 2-way environment, will see the next generation of server capacity topping at a whopping 768Gb or in other words 150% the capacity of that with conventional RDIMM

The new modules are also 20% faster with a maximum speed of 1600Mbps compared to the 1333Mbps of RDIMM, which means its far more capable of meeting the ever growing requirements of todays data centres.

To keep the temperatures down inside, Elpida have used their original deisgn heatspreaders to maintain a stable operating temperature and reliability for the higher system density.

Once sample shipments have been tested and recorded, Elpida aims to get mass market shipment rolling in the first quarter of 2011.
