Epic Games Vows to Continue Multi-Billion Dollar Fight Against Apple and Google

Epic Games is continuing its battle against Apple and Google, even though it has already spent billions of dollars on the legal fight. CEO Tim Sweeney recently shared in an interview with IGN that this spending is part of a long-term plan. The main issue is Epic’s goal to bring Fortnite back to Android and iOS without paying the 30% fee these companies charge for transactions on their platforms.

While Epic has won some battles, especially in Europe, Fortnite has not been available on Apple devices in the U.S. since 2020. On January 23, Epic took another step by officially launching the Epic Games Store on Android and iOS. This store stands out by offering developers an 88/12 revenue split and no fees if they use their own payment systems.

Epic is Covering Apple’s Fees for Developers

To operate on Apple’s system, Epic has decided to cover the “Core Technology Fee” charged to developers who join its free games program. This means Epic is losing money on most transactions but is willing to do so to keep its mobile strategy alive. Sweeney explained that the company has been spending more than it earns because it is focused on growing and reaching more players.

So far, Epic has spent over $1 billion on its mobile push, despite the challenges created by Apple and Google’s control of the market. Sweeney remains determined and said, “Yeah, I think we might run into serious financial problems after a couple more decades of this. But we’re determined to fight this out. I expect large parts of this struggle will go on throughout the rest of this decade and we’re fully committed to going through it and investing to break through.”

Sweeney believes this struggle is not just important for Epic, but also for other developers. A more open system would give everyone a better chance to connect with more players. For now, Epic remains focused on breaking down these barriers and creating a fairer mobile gaming market.
