Escape from Tarkov Was Never Meant to Be Fun, Says Its Creator
Escape from Tarkov is not one of the easiest or most relaxing games on the market. After all, it’s an extraction shooter, where dying means losing everything you were carrying.
The FPS triggers many emotions and sensations, but perhaps “fun” isn’t one of them — and that’s completely intentional, according to the development team.
The Developer’s Perspective
Speaking to Insider Gaming, Nikita Buyanov, the head of Battlestate Games — the studio behind Escape from Tarkov — explained that the real goal is not to entertain, but to satisfy.
Just as it can be extremely frustrating to be defeated and lose all your progress, it can also be deeply satisfying when things go right.
Buyanov said:
People really want to play this kind of game, they really want to play something intellectual, hard, punishing, unforgiving… Something that will actually shake their emotions, not the game for the enjoyment.
Tarkov is made for satisfaction, not for fun. Not for enjoyment.
To have a chance to get the satisfaction or to frustrate. It is what it is. It’s polarizing. You get everything or you get nothing.
Insider Gaming also noted that the experience is almost like gambling — players risk it all for a chance at victory. Do you agree with that description? Let us know in the comments.
