During a Q1 sales call, President and CEO of NVIDIA Jen-Hsun Huang, speaking about the company’s growth in its graphics processing division, pointed to the next generation of gamers being an emerging market, claiming that “every new human is a gamer”.

When asked what tangible data there is that gaming is a potential growth market, Huang responded, “I think you’re getting a lot of anecdotal evidence from multiple directions that suggests that PC gaming is growing. First of all, eSports. You know that eSports is largely PC gaming. And eSports has become so large now that it’s even highlighted on ESPN2 – ESPN. You know that the number of stadiums that have sold out as a result of eSport tournaments is growing over time. So there’s a lot of anecdotal evidence that video games is growing.”

“I think it’s also pretty clear that almost every new human is a gamer,” Huang continued. “The previous generation before me, very few are gamers. My generation, I would say probably is 25% gamers. My kids’ generation is probably 75% gamers, and the generation after that’s got to be 100% gamers. And so games is no longer a niche. Game is really a pop culture now, and we expect that gaming to continue to expand.”

With the company taking a hit due to PC sales – tablets and smartphones are now dominating the computing market – gaming is now NVIDIA’s most lucrative market, evidenced by the release of the NVIDIA SHIELD gaming tablet. Huang, though, has high hopes for a market boost to PC sales with the release of Windows 10.
