EVGA SuperNova 850 G5 Power Supply Review

A Closer Look

Out of the box, the EVGA SuperNova G5 has a nice sleek appearance. A particular highlight, however, has to be the fan design which is certainly more than a little eye-catching.

As you can see in the picture below, the fan is set in a dark green that, against my expectations if you described it to me, contrasts amazingly well against the black. With those 4 off-shoot brackets as well, this has a very unusual removal style but overall really adds to the aesthetic of the power supply.

While the EVGA SuperNova isn’t devoid of aesthetic branding, it does also contain some useful information. For example one of the side panels gives you a full and detailed list of how the power is distributed across the specific rails.

The main exhaust vent is nice and large and with a honeycomb-style design should provide a nice solid airflow. An important factor as this does come with a ‘passive’ eco-mode.

A close look at the main area of interest shows you the power input port, the main on/off switch, the eco control switch as well as a small EVGA brand logo which actually lights up when the power supply is switched on.

Finally, we have the main modular power input bank. With all of the ports itemized you shouldn’t have any difficulty finding which cable goes into what slot. It is a little awkward in that fact that this isn’t a back-to-back design which often makes cable removal/insertion a bit easier on the hands. On the whole, however, it’s nice and solid!

Cabling

As noted earlier in the review, you are provided with more than enough cables to hook-up even the most elaborate of gaming PCs. The cables themselves are nice and long meaning that you shouldn’t have any restriction getting them where you want to go and, in addition, having some nice solid cable management.

In addition, with their protective sleeving, they feel both strong and exceptionally durable.

Internals – A Look Inside!

A cursory look at the inside of the power supply again adds to the overall confidence we have in its design. Everything looks clean, tidy and well-spaced which is exactly what you want to see!

The main fan is designed by Protechnic Electric. A company we will admit we haven’t heard of before. However, it isn’t sometimes unusual to see the same fan get different branding.

A look at the PCB highlights just how well this has been designed and put together. You’ll find all the main components well-spaced and, in addition, no huge blobs of unsightly glue.

As the EVGA SuperNova G5 advertises itself as having all Japanese capacitors, that’s perhaps the simple most important factor of our internal inspection and the news is good. As you can see in the image below, the main capacitor is a 105c rated ‘Rubycon’ design. This is, indeed, a Japanese company and, without a doubt, one of the best around!

Overall Thoughts!

From everything we have seen to say, the EVGA SuperNova G5 is an excellent power supply. It comes with all the features you could want and an aesthetic design that is both solid, well-designed and more than pleasant on the eye.

With this in mind, one would expect to see some pretty impressive test results. Well, there’s only one way to find out!
