Fable Lets You Marry Over 1,000 NPCs, But Watch Your Reputation
During yesterday’s Xbox Developer Direct, Playground Games revealed that in Fable, players will be able to form romantic relationships with almost any NPC in the game — and even start a family. The presentation also hinted that it might be possible to marry multiple characters at the same time.
When asked whether players could marry every NPC in the game, the developers’ answer was simple: yes, with only a few exceptions tied to the story.
Romance, Marriage, and Family in Fable
“With a very few exceptions, the answer is yes,” said game director Ralph Fulton in an interview with GamesRadar. “We went into this with some non-negotiables that we felt were just really important in this area of the game. So we said from the start, I want to be able to talk to any NPC. Now, obviously in the original games, you did that through gestures. We wanted to do that in fully voiced conversations in this game. So you kind of throw that challenge at the narrative team and the audio team.”
Fulton explained that relationships with NPCs can evolve in many ways: you can marry them, have children, hire them, or even fire them. However, the system is not one-sided — NPCs will respond based on your choices. For example, they might decide to divorce you if they don’t like your actions.
“You can talk to them, you can romance them, you can marry them. You can divorce them or be divorced by them,” said Fulton. “You can have children with them. You can hire them. You can fire them. They are [the NPCs] kind of a game within a game, but they are such a unique, fundamental part of Fable.”
According to Fulton, Fable will feature a rich system that tracks the player’s reputation across different towns and communities. NPCs will judge your actions based on what they witness or hear about. Each one will react differently depending on their personality, worldview, and moral values.
So yes, you can marry dozens of characters — but not everyone will be happy about your love life.
“We kind of saw a little bit of it in the footage from the piece [Xbox Developer Direct],” Fulton added. “When those little words are sort of popping up on screen, that’s somebody seeing you being generous, or dishonest or dishonorable, or a bigamist, or whatever. So there’s an abundance of things for them to react to.”
Fable will launch in autumn for Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Game Pass.
