Facebook’s AI Seeks to Conquer Humans at Go

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a concept almost everyone has heard of, from the movies and stories where an AI seeks to overthrows humanity. From Terminator to I Robot we’ve seen humans and artificial intelligence battle it out while in the real world we’ve faced our own battles with board games being set as the battlefield for the fight to end all fights. Now it seems that Facebook wants to challenge their AI program with a different game, Go.

First a computer won at Checkers, then several years later IBM’s Deep Blue won a chess match against Gary Kasparov, the world champion. In 2011, IBM’s Watson won the trivia game Jeopardy. AI work by analyzing possible moves, thousands of combinations and options are analyzed with the most logical choice often giving them advantages.

Go features a grid of 19×19, with pieces placed at the points where they join, offering more than the traditional game in regards to the number of choices and possible moves to make per turn. By using Neural Networks, the same technology that Facebook use to auto-detect your face and your friends in your pictures, they hope to create something that could soon unsettle the champions of Go.

What do you think? Could you see yourself playing against a champion level AI in all your favorite games, both on the computer and off?
