Fans Launch Campaign Urging Microsoft to Revive Windows Phone
The community has not forgotten Microsoft’s mobile past — and there’s still nostalgia. A recent campaign hosted on Change.org has started circulating among users who miss having a third option in the mobile operating system market. The proposal, launched by a user from Greece, formally asks the Redmond company to reconsider its current strategy and revive its discontinued smartphone operating system.
The petition argues that there is still a viable space in today’s market — which is almost completely dominated by iOS and Android — for an alternative focused on productivity and simplicity. The supporters of this movement are not asking for an exact return to the old Windows Phone but rather a renewed version that leverages modern technology while keeping the iconic tile interface and deep integration with Microsoft’s PC ecosystem.
The Goal: Establish Windows Phone as a Third Mobile Option
This movement from fans comes years after Microsoft decided to shut down its mobile division and end the development of the platform — a decision that marked the end of the Lumia devices era. Although the company’s CEO, Satya Nadella, has occasionally expressed regret about how that exit was handled, Microsoft has not announced any official plans to return to the smartphone market, especially after discontinuing experimental projects like the Surface Duo.
The community proposal suggests that the current evolution of Windows 11’s architecture and versatility could serve as a solid technical foundation for a possible comeback. The central idea is to bring the desktop experience to mobile, offering real competition in specific user niches. However, for now, this remains a community-driven petition without any official corporate response.
Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that Microsoft will take this petition into consideration.
