AMD Vega mGPU Support Enabled in Radeon Software 17.9.2

Starting with Radeon Software 17.9.2, AMD is enabling multi-GPU (mGPU) configurations using their latest Radeon RX Vega graphics cards. This includes both the Radeon RX Vega 56 and RX Vega 64 GPUs, in sets of two. AMD claims up to an impressive 80 percent faster performance boost. Their internal testing shows improvements on Far Cry Primal, Metro Last Light Redux, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Shadow of Mordor, Sniper Elite 4 and Witcher 3.

A single AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 for example runs at 46 fps in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The multi-GPU scaling pushes the performance with a pair of RX Vega 64 to 83 fps. A lot of these sample titles are Radeon sponsored games, so it would also be interesting to see how much other games fare. Also, it would be interesting to see how the RX Vega 56 does in terms of scaling as it could offer an excellent value over the NVIDIA alternative.

What about existing AMD Radeon Software bugs?

AMD only talked about the new multi-GPU feature so far. The actual driver package is not available yet at the time of this writing. There is no mention of whether the update also fixes the existing hardware acceleration and Overwatch problems. Blizzard themselves suggests Radeon users to roll back to driver version 17.7.1 to avoid the game crashes.

This article will be updated with the driver download link once it goes live.

The End is (probably not) Nigh!

Are you looking forward to your weekend? Planning on having a good time? Well, hopefully, you won’t let the apocalypse get in your way. Yes, another doomsday prediction is approaching. So, is it time to repent your sins or is this just another crackpot with a tinfoil hat?

The Nibiru theory has stated that within our solar system, there has been a hidden planet. Planet X, just in case this wasn’t sounding science-fiction enough for you. This Planet X, based on prophecies from the bible is set to collide with Earth by this Saturday.

The Prophecy of Planet X

Firstly, I’m copyrighting that sub-heading, so hands off.

The Nibiru theory has existed for some time, however, recent events in the world have triggered some to suggest it’s coming this weekend.

The bible sayeth in Revelation 12:1: ‘A great sign appeared in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun with the moon under her feet and a crown of 12 stars on her head. And being with child, she cried out in her travail and was in anguish of delivery.’

Here endeth the lesson.

Planet X niburu

Ok, so doesn’t sound too terrifying, but why does this suggest the world is ending? In a nutshell (or case), it’s the fact that a few barely notable people have made high-profile announcements declaring so.

In a report via the Metro, self-declared mind reader David Meade, who incidentally subscribes to the Niburu theory has said the above Bible passage confirms that we are all doomed on Saturday.

This gives you a little over 24 hours to contact Elon Musk to hitch a ride on his rocket.

How does a bible passage confirm that we’re doomed?

Ok, well Mr. Meade has said the following:

  • The ‘sign appearing in heaven’ is the solar eclipse which occurred last month.
  • The recent hurricanes in American and the Carribean reflect the ‘cosmic ballet’ ushering the end of the world.

Well, I’m convinced!

The truth of the matter is that practically every notable scientist has said that this is all a load of rubbish. So don’t go on a murdering spree, don’t max out your credit cards, don’t have that affair you’ve always thought of. The vast likelihood of the world ending on Saturday is no greater than at any other day in the year.

If you do however feel like changing it and going out with a bang, at least you may not have to worry about the hangover the next day. Oh and about maybe escaping earth in a rocket, perhaps not such a good idea after all.

NVIDIA Announces Remote-Only Shield TV for £179

NVIDIA is announcing a new competitive pricing option for their Shield TV (remote only) for only £179. As almost everyone knows, the Shield TV is not your average Android-based streaming media player. It is capable of 4K HDR playback, and has expandable storage with two USB 3.0 ports available in the rear. Users can connect it via the build-in 802.11ac 2×2 MIMO dual-band Wi-Fi or through the Gigabit Ethernet port.

NVIDIA Announces Remote-Only Shield TV for £179

The NVIDIA Shield TV is also a lot more powerful than other streaming boxes. In fact it is close to 3x as powerful as the Apple TV, 4x as powerful as the Fire TV and 12x that of the Roku Ultra. That is why it is capable of PC game streaming.  It also has an open Android ecosystem of apps and games. If it is in your Google Play library, you can stream it to the living room with the Shield. It even has voice control.

New Apps for the NVIDIA Shield TV

Aside from the new controller-less Shield TV, UK users also get two new apps which help stave off their hunger for content. This includes CHILI Cinema and YouTube kids. The latter is self-explanatory, however the CHILI Cinema is a new video-on-demand service for UK users. Unlike regular video-on-demand services such as NetFlix or Hulu however, users can watch all new film releases just a few weeks after its shown in theaters. It also has a large catalogue of other TV shows as well. Best of all, there is no subscription required. Users only pay for the media consumed, similar to how you only pay movie tickets for movies you want to see.

Intel Delays GPU-Integrated Cannon Lake Until Year-End of 2018

Intel has been stating that their 10nm is on schedule as early as eight months ago. In fact, just a few days ago at a Beijing event, they reiterated the same thing. They are even boasting about how they are far ahead technologically in comparison to TSMC and Samsung’s 10nm process. However according to DigiTimes, they are actually rescheduling the release of some of their next-generation Cannon Lake processors until the end of 2018.

Intel Begins Shipping 10nm Near End of 2017

The delay appears to affect Cannon Lake processors with an integrated GPU. Considering most of their desktop and notebook products have one, that covers most users. Notebook vendors have been considering and some even vocal about skipping Cannon Lake altogether and waiting its successor. Cannon Lake is going to be followed up by Ice Lake, with expectations of another chipset change and requirement, making it incompatible with Cannon Lake.

Intel Delays GPU-Integrated Cannon Lake Until Year-End of 2018

According to DigiTimes, Intel is still shipping 10nm products towards the near end of 2017, but these will be lower volume SKU. The ramp up will follow on the first half of 2018.

The 10nm Cannon Lake supposedly will deliver 25% performance improvement at 45% less power consumption over the 14nm Kaby Lake. This is appealing to notebook vendors since it means longer battery life. In fact this should help stabilize the notebook market further after five years of shipment decline.

AMD, Zen, 12nm, Vega, GlobalFoundries

Over much of the past couple of years, AMD has significantly lagged behind Intel’s process node. This all changed with the latest Ryzen series which uses the 14nm process node, the same as Intel’s current generation. With Intel set to move onto 10nm, AMD is making a move as well to new process nodes as well. During the GlobalFoundries Technology Conference, AMD announced that they will be moving to the new 12nm process.

During the Ryzen and Vega launches, AMD indicated that they would move to a new process for 2018. At that time, the slides all suggested that 14nm+, an upgraded version of 14nm will be used. One reason for this was that fact that Global Foundries may jump from 14nm straight to 7nm. AMD would tweak 14nm to get 14nm+. With AMD now using 12nm so 14nm+ is no longer relevant. 12nm should also provide more benefit than 14nm+.

AMD Zen and Vega on 12nm, not 14nm+

At the same time, the move from 14nm to 12nm is not that big. I expect the wafers will be largely similar in pitch to 14nm with a few tighter tolerances here and there. GlobalFoundries is claiming a 15% density improvement over 16nm and 10% improved performance over the same. It is telling that the comparison is made against 16nm instead of the current GlobalFoundries 14nm process. Nonetheless, it is still a welcome upgrade especially as Intel is moving to 10nm during the same timeframe.

The new 12nm process is likely a reflection of the reality that 7nm will take some time. GlobalFoundries appears to have given up on any ideas of going straight to 7nm. At the same time, we should still expect 7nm to arrive in 2019/2020. This will be in time for Zen 2 and Navi which are the next architectures after Zen and Vega. In 2018, we should just expect a node process refresh from AMD. Hopefully, GlobalFoundries will be able to hit their ambitious process node targets and not let down AMD.

Sharkoon Introduces AI7000 Case Series

Sharkoon is announcing the addition of the AI7000 case series to their chassis lineup. This AI7000 uses a standard ATX mid-tower size, with four accent colour options to choose from. Black, red, green or blue, the AI7000 even provides matching LED color fans to complete the theme. Within the series itself, users can choose between a showcase “glass” edition, or a functional “silent” edition.

Sharkoon AI7000 Glass or Silent

As you might have guessed from the name, the AI7000 Glass comes with a 4mm tempered glass side-panel. The silent edition on the other hand, has soundproof lining at the top and side panels. It loses the window on the side for viewing for practical reasons. It also loses the matching LED color fans pre-installed.

Both cases share the bulk of the features however, since they have identical bases. Two 5.25″ external drive bays are available at the front, and both have room for up to two 3.5-inch drives in the drive cage. One more 3.5-inch drive or two 2.5-inch drives can be installed on the side wall.

In terms of component support, installing graphics cards up to 380mm in length is possible since there are no HDD cages on the way. The maximum CPU cooler height is also set at a generous 175mm. Since there is a PSU cover on the way, the front radiator support is limited to 57mm thick radiators with fans. This front area also supports up to 2x 140mm fans/radiator, while the top supports up to 2x 120/140mm fans.

Pricing and Availability

Some stores in the UK such as https://www.idealo.co.uk/ already list these cases at £73.90. Some stores might show a price difference of £10 between the two versions however. This is due to the fact that the sound dampening material costs more than the tempered glass side-panel.

Secretlab Gaming Chairs Now Available in the UK

East Asian gaming chair company Secretlab is announcing that their products are now available for UK gamers. The Singapore-based company initially only sold hardware in the US and Australian market. To celebrate their expansion into the European and UK market, they are currently offering big discounts to entice would-be buyers. In fact they are offering £120 OFF the retail price for a limited time. Their gaming chair line is currently available in two different series: Titan and Omega.

Secretlab Titan Series

Secretlab Gaming Chairs Now Available in the UK

The Titan is their flagship chair with a regular MSRP of £449. With the £120 discount, this drops the price at only £329. For that, you can choose between three color options: Stealth, Amber and Tempo. While the Amber color is self-explanatory, having amber accents on a black chair, the others are different. The Stealth version is an all-black chair with a hint of red stitching. The Tempo theme on the other hand, is sportier, having different shades of blue and white.

It uses thick steel tubular frame with elastic strap supports. The main body itself, uses prime PU leather over precisely cut cold-cure foam. Users can adjust the full-length backrest recline, as well as the tilt mechanism. Its class-4 hydraulics even supports heavy gamers, while the sturdy 70cm diameter aluminium base with XL PU casters provide stable mobility. The recommended weight limit is 130kg and under.

Secretlab Omega Series

The Omega series is slightly smaller than the Titan, but it costs £100 less at £399 regularly. With the £120.00, the 30% discount drops the price to only £279.00. Unlike the Titan, the Omega has one more additional color option called ‘classic’. It is basically a mostly black chair with white trim. It is missing the adjustability of the lumbar cusion and the caster size is now smaller. Using 6cm PU coated, rather than XL PU coated casters. The recommended weight limit is 110kg and under.

Noctua Releases Low-Profile CPU Coolers for AMD Ryzen

Austrian cooling manufacturer Noctua is releasing new AMD Ryzen compatible versions of their low-profile coolers. Namely, the NH-L9a and NH-L12S models, with new mounting kits for Ryzen installation. Both these coolers are ideal for compact HTPC or small-form factor builds where height clearance is important. The NH-L9a in particular, is only 37mm tall, which is under 1U height. It is essentially a silent alternative to a stock cooler. For those who require beefier cooling with minimal height, the NH-L12S measures 70mm tall with an updraft blowing fan. Its quad heatpipe design can handle 95W CPUs, unlike the NH-L9a which is more ideal for 65W CPU loads.

Noctua Releases AM4 Versions of NH-L12a and NH-L9a Coolers

The NH-L9a comes with a 92mm fan as the active cooling agent. Since it measures 92mm wide and is 114mm long, it provides no clearance issues for the RAM or PCIe. It can sit comfortably on any AMD Ryzen mini-ITX motherboard. This NF-A9x14 fan operates at 600 to 2500 RPM via a 4-pin PWM cable. It also comes with a low-noise adapter which caps the speed at 1800 RPM for those without a PWM header.

Noctua Releases AM4 Versions of NH-L12a and NH-L9a Coolers

The NH-L12S is slightly larger at 146mm wide x 128mm long. It uses the larger  NF-A12x15 PWM 120mm fan, but it is also slimmer than the standard 25mm. It operates at 450 to 1850 RPM, but can be capped at 1400 RPM with the low-noise adapter. Unlike the NH-L9a which is specifically for AMD systems however, the NH-L12S is also compatible with Intel LGA115x and LGA20xx systems, as well as the older AMD AM3+/FM2+ mounting standard.

Noctua Releases AM4 Versions of NH-L12a and NH-L9a Coolers

Noctua AM4 Low-Profile Cooler Pricing and Availability

The NH-L12S has an MSRP of EUR 49.90, while the smaller NH-L9a-AM4 costs a little bit less at EUR 39.90. Both models are currently shipping and will be available in most retail stores by October.

Dutch Courts Rule Against Asetek in Patent Suit vs Cooler Master

Dutch courts have ruled against Asetek‘s patent claim against Cooler Master in the EU market. Although they have had success filing lawsuits against their competition in the US , the European courts believe otherwise. The ruling states that damages worth 113,000 Euros must be paid to Cooler Master for compensation. This covers the court and case fees incurred. The original suit stems from perceived infringement with their patent of Cooler Master’s Nepton cooler series in Europe. The patent in question is EP 1-923-771, was filed in 2004 and awarded eventually in May of 2015.

Courts Move to Invalidate Asetek Patent

Many are familiar with Asetek’s litigious efforts. In fact many all-in-one cooler designs over the past few years seek to circumvent the claim. Silverstone for example has AI with the block moved to the radiator. Other manufacturers including Swiftech and EKWB built theirs with the pump and reservoir separate from the block as well. Many have avoided the EU and US market entirely, offering AIO units only in certain regions.

Following the ruling, Cooler Master EU moved to get the court to invalidate Asetek’s patent claim entirely. What is supporting their claim is that the design itself is not new. Claiming that there is a utility model available in China already pre-dating the filing date.

However, they have an actual 10nm Cannon Lake wafer on hand to show off how far they are progressing. Going from 14nm to 10nm has proven to be challenging for chip makers. However, Intel is confident that they are much further along and even made announcements regarding their 10nm product portfolio.

The specific wafer shown is from 10nm test chips containing ARM Cortex A75 cores, with target performance in excess of 3GHz. Competing chipmakers TSMC and Samsung have 10nm chips on hand as well. But Intel wants to emphasize that their process technology uses tighter transistors and metal pitches for almost double the density in comparison.

Intel ‘Falcon Mesa’ FPGA with PCIe 4.0

Aside from showing off their 10nm wafer, they also announced their Falcon Mesa FPGA at the event. This FPGA will be the first to use the PCI Express 4.0 interface. The timeline for when PCIe 4.0 will hit the mainstream is not finalized by PCI-SIG for now, but the timing appears to be close enough for launch. This FPGA boasts 112 GBps serial transceiver links and uses Intel’s Embedded Multi-Die Interconnect (EMIB).

Although this is not for the mainstream desktop, it is interesting to see how fast things are progressing lately. It is also understandable following Intel’s restructuring last year. The diversified portfolio is in keeping with the changing market, showing the chip giant’s less reliance on the desktop consumer market. Their future now involves commitment to AI and other industrial areas, as evidenced by their recent acquisitions.

The InWin Polaris RGB LED fans which the company displayed at Computex is now available. Just like the Aurora fans released last month, the Polaris RGB LED fans are daisy-chainable. Which means users can hook multiple units together, minimizing wires. Unlike the Aurora however, the Polaris does not come with an RGB controller. In fact, it does not need it. However, users can hook it up to an ASUS, MSI or Gigabyte motherboard with a 4-pin RGB header.

To make sure that the LED shines through, the Polaris fans use a round transparent frame. The seven-blade impeller is also transparent, allowing for the LED coming from the center hub to flow through into the frame. The only part that is not transparent is the corner mounts which have rubber padding for vibration absorption.

InWin Polaris RGB LED Silent Case Fans Now Available

Each Polaris fan operates at a range of ~500 to ~1280 RPM via 4-pin PWM. At the top speed, it produces 43.31CFM of airflow and 1.26mm/H2O of static pressure. All at just 20.2dBA.

Pricing and Availability

InWin did not reveal pricing yet. It is not even on their e-Store list. However, the product page is up.  Also since it does not come with an RGB controller box, it might even be more affordable than the $89 USD Aurora 3-pack. In fact, users will be able to purchase the InWin Polaris in single or two-pack versions.

Ask-Me-Anything says PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds

Brendan Greene, the creators of the insanely popular PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds held an AMA yesterday and as per AMA standards, it ranged from the sublime to the ridiculous. We did, however, get some exciting revelations about what the future holds for the popular last-man-standing shooter.

The decision to hold an AMA isn’t entirely unexpected with sales recently topping 10m units.

While most questions received a generic ‘we’re looking into it’ answer, there were some genuine revelations about planned changes to the game.

So, whats the news?

To save you reading the AMA, although you are welcome to by clicking here, the major points, in brief, were as follows:

  • A single player mode is planned for the future. Although at the moment is very much a long way off.
  • The 2-key binding feature will continue to be excluded from the game. This option allowed players to do a jumping crouch action. Similar to what us older FPS players would call a ‘dolphin dive’.
  • 3 new vehicles are being planned for release (I still love the Dacia).
  • Greene denied allegations that popular streamers of the game received any preferential treatment. Specifically, allegations that people who trolled live streamers, by, for example, honking a car horn next to them, we’re being banned. A rumour in fairness, I had heard. Greene has completely denied this has happened.
  • A ranking system will be introduced, but is still being worked out.
  • A progression system is also in the works.
  • Plans for a ‘nod’ to Father Ted in an upcoming update.

So plenty to discuss. Nothing, alas, about the $500 PUBG fashion accessory.

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds Beats DOTA2 in Steam Player Count

Some slight questions/concerns

Given that PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds recently topped the steam charts, beating Dota 2 into 2nd place, PUBG is exceeding all expectations. Therefore, some game development is to be expected.

I do, however, based on the above, have some minor concerns.

Generally speaking, it’s in regards to the ranking/progression. One of the significant fun factors in PUBG is the level playing field. Everyone parachutes out that plane with, statistically speaking, as much chance as any one else of being the last man (or woman) standing. I hope that any progression or leveling system does not affect that too much.

In regards to Father Ted, I think that’s fairly straightforward. I would expect in an upcoming update that ‘Craggy Island’ will appear. At the very least, the parochial house. Want to know how to find it? Just look for the guy wearing the “I shot JR” t-shirt.

When it comes out, you won’t have any trouble finding it. Just look for the guy wearing the “I shot JR” t-shirt.

Why the current system does need to change

The current review system on Valve is broken. There, I said it. This wouldn’t be the first time such criticism had been leveled at the review system employed in Steam. We recently saw the inclusion of two separate review systems within a games store page, recent and overall. The hope was that any negative review bombings which occurred would only affect the one list rather than the ‘overall’. There was just one problem with this new system, it didn’t work really.

The system was unfortunately entirely based on someone bothering to discern the difference. In fairness to steam though, they have been trying to get it right for quite some time now and are clearly keen on a fair review system.

Steam in recent years attempted to crack down on what it felt were fake reviews by not allowing people who didn’t buy directly from Steam’s review to be taken into the aggregate scoring. That didn’t work.

Valve introduced the Discovery 2.0 update to, as above, look to target more recent reviews. That didn’t work.

On the plus side though, Valve did support the community when publishers attempted to sue people for negative reviews.

Valve has considered the review system such a major problem that it did even consider, for a while, removing reviews completely reports PCGames.

Gabe Newell Confirms Valve Developing 3 New VR Games

So, what will Valve change in the new system?

Well, the major problem with the current system is that if a developer does something which the community takes a dislike to, it has become common for reviews to get bombed.

Following recent gaffs regarding the removal of mods, the developers of GTA 5 found their game to be, based on recent reviews, ‘overwhelmingly negative’ at one point. For any of you who are still reeling off my initial declaration that Steam reviews don’t work, read this paragraph again. Grand Theft Auto 5 had a ‘overwhelmingly negative’ Steam review.

Firewatch, in addition, has recently suffered the wrath of PewDiePie’s fanbase for them placing a DMCA claim again the popular YouTube personality.

What Valve is now proposing is that Steam reviews will be reflective over a period of time. This will hopefully allow people to identify the overall pattern of reviews and specifically the negative spikes these bombs cause. They are calling this new system a ‘histogram’. Not entirely snappy,

Not an entirely snappy name, but what do you think? Will the new system work or will Valve forever attempt to find a solution to their review nightmare? Let us know in the comments!

Time to get button mashing!

It has been nearly 2 years since we last had our Dynasty Warriors release. Since that time, like an addict in withdrawal, fans have been gibbering wrecks awaiting the new release. Well, time to relax. Dynasty Warriors 9 is confirmed for release in early 2018.

This will, for many, represent the first true release on the current generation consoles. Yes, Dynasty Warriors 8 Empires was released on PS4, but it was, if we’re being honest, merely a higher spec version of the PS3 edition.

Basing itself around the ‘Romance of the 3 Kingdoms’ saga, both the plot and characters are really fascinating. In truth, it wouldn’t be an unfair criticism to say that each new game simply rehashes the previous, but sometimes that’s exactly what a franchise needs. Too many have learned that in gaming franchises, tampering with a winning formula often isn’t to your advantage.

Dynasty Warriors

What to expect in Dynasty Warriors 9

Developer Koei Tecmo has said that they do plan to bring an additional level of fluidity to the combat reports PCGames“Flow Attacks create move-set combos that differ depending on the enemy’s position and seamlessly continue when enemies become prone, are in mid-air, or stunned. Reactive Attacks are extremely versatile and can range from counterattacks, dash attacks, assaults, to guard breaks and finish moves. Trigger Attacks are powerful moves that change an enemy’s state. Attacks will change depending on the combination of buttons pressed.”

It might mean that combat might be adaptive to the scenario which will hopefully make for a smoother more fluid style. I do, however, hope that this does not mean the end of button mashing. My wife is a big fan of the series, particularly the simplistic style of combat. If they over-complicate it, she will not be happy.

It will certainly beat waiting for that 3DS version at least.

While we, unfortunately, do not have a confirmed release date as yet. We do at least know that Dynasty Warriors 9 is indeed coming with Lubu set to terrorise us once again in early 2018 for PS4, Xbox One and PC.

How safe is your cryptocurrency?

Investment in cryptocurrency has boomed in the last year. This is due, in no small part, to the almost vertical rise in the price of the Bitcoin. With the other major currency, Ethereum, also continuing to rise in value people want to get on board while the going is good. There is just one problem when there is money to be made, there are people who want to take it from you.

Personally, I’m waiting for an e-mail from a Nigerian prince telling me he has $19,000,000 in Bitcoin he’s willing to share with me.

China might be seeing the writing on the wall with cryptocurrencies with reports suggesting their intention to ban it in the near future.

The Swiss financial authority has confirmed that they shut down a website specifically trading in cryptocurrencies reports Reuters. The website was selling the currency with one slight problem, it wasn’t actually selling anything. It was taking the consumers money, posting the money on their account, however, none of the currency was real.

It is the problem with an online currency, how do you prove its existence?

How many have been affected by this?

Fortunately, not too many. Although the Swiss Financial Authority has said it is investigating a further 12 companies. The specific company in question ‘QUID PRO QUO’ had apparently traded over $4m of Bitcoin before being closed. So we are talking quite significant amounts of money here.

Personally, the thought of heavy investment in an online currency would terrify me. Most standard currencies have something backing it, be it a government or gold. I am still yet to be convinced of the value of a currency based solely on its existence.

In addition to this, reports of its misuse continue to grow. We reported only this week how The Pirate Bay was hijacking visitors PCs for their own cryptocurrency mining gains.

One piece of advice might be to use reputable traders, however, as can be read here, even they have been victims of hacking.

I personally believe the Bitcoin bubble will burst, and burst hard. No industry or currency can sustain this growth with a major dip. From those of us who don’t mine or didn’t invest, we can hopefully at least look forward to eBay getting flooded with 2nd hand high-end graphics cards.

New Terminator Film Reunites Hamilton and Schwarzenegger

Great news for fans of the Terminator as both Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton are set to return to the movie franchise. The announcement comes directly from legendary director James Cameron, who will also be producing it. Cameron left the franchise after Terminator 2 and the quality has obviously dipped since then. Creating awful follow up movies which ended up getting worse than the last. The return of both principal leads and Cameron himself sets the new revitalized franchise off to a good start. On top of that, Tim Miller will take the directorial seat. He is mostly known for his recent work in Deadpool. Miller will be pushing the Terminator franchise back to its roots with Cameron’s guidance.

Terminator Reunion 25-years in the Making

New Terminator Film Reunites Hamilton and Schwarzenegger

James Cameron is very critical of Hollywood’s ageist and sexist views. He is even critical of the recent blockbuster Wonder Woman movie as “a step backwards” for feminism and progress. Unlike Wonder Woman who got her powers from a male god, Linda Hamilton’s Sarah Connor is self-made and survives through her grit and determination alone. Her portrayal of Sarah Connor 25-years ago is enduring and remains one of the most iconic female roles in history, despite being a sci-fi movie.

Aside from Cameron, Skydance and Paramount will be producing the film. US distribution will be under Paramount, while Fox handles the international release. The plot of the new film comes from Cameron directly. However, Cameron and Miller are hammering out a trilogy with a heavily talented writers’ room for an overarching story. This writers’ room includes notable names such as David Goyer, Charles Eglee, Josh Friedman and more.

The next movie is going to be a direct sequel to T2: Judgment Day, ignoring Terminator 3 and all other movies in between.

World Records Broken!

The Proterra electric bus has just smashed the world record for the longest distance travelled by an electric vehicle on a single charge. While Elon Musk recovered from this shock, the initiative has been undertaken to hopefully encourage cities to switch from traditional diesel bus services to electric.

Admittedly, when talking about electric vehicles, a bus isn’t very sexy. If you want sexy, check out this fully electric E-Type Jaguar.

The UK, when compared to the US, has embraced electric busses significantly more. A significant majority of Park and Rides in the UK are entirely run off fully electric, or at the very least, hybrid services. Diesel emissions, particularly the highly toxic nitrous oxide they produce are a concern. This is particularly so for large cities and the reduced air quality.

Proterra

Electric cars are certainly a growing industry. If one ignores Tesla, which isn’t easy, many of the market leaders are endorsing electric cars. In a recent report, Mercedes have committed to all of their vehicles being electric by just 2022.

Surely though the Proterra bus that can do 1,100 miles must take an age to charge?

It is, generally speaking, the major flaw with electric cars. Firstly, they take ages to recharge. Secondly, the range isn’t great and thirdly we have enough trouble generating enough electricity as it is.

While improvements have been made in the last 20 years, those hurdles have still yet to be fully cleared.

Well, in a report via NextPowerUp, the Proterra bus kinda smashes the first two problems there. With 660kwh of storage, the Proterra reportedly only needs 1 hour to charge. This is based on their own fast charging system. In regards to the range, I can’t think of a single fossil-fuel car that could manage 1,100 miles. Not without being designed for that specific purpose at least.

We are of course left with the fundamental issue of the actual supply of electricity. We simply don’t have enough of it and lord knows people aren’t keen on nuclear plants.

That being said, 1,100 miles for an electric vehicle is highly impressive. What do you think? Are electric cars the way forward or do we need to solve the energy problem first? Let us know in the comments.

Will Facebook have the right answers?

Following allegations of Russian influence in the 2016 Presidential Election, the US Senate has called a special commission to look into any allegations of electoral influence or tampering. On the plus side, it appears that the US might, finally, be willing to accept that Trump, for better or worse, is their President. This investigation, therefore, might finally reflect the autopsy of how that ever happened. In a move that will surprise some, Facebook is expected to be called in to answer questions. Specifically over if they exercised any influence themselves.

Mark Zuckerberg has often been challenged over his politic alliegences. In fairness to him, he has never formally declared himself one way or the other. He has often preferred to skirt the matter, at least publically, by seemingly dipping his toe in each political pool.

The main concern regarding Facebook is the matter regarding ‘fake news’. In addition, the reports that Facebook allowed sponsored politic adverts from Russian sources. Whether that’s better or worse than targeted antisemetic advertising, I’ll let you decide.

facebook

Facebook and Fake News

I don’t think so, but at the same time, I’m sure the Senate will ask some challenging questions. With the social media site recently reporting record profits, some will want to know where that money came from.

If it turns out that Facebook has exercised or been used as a proxy for ‘fake news’ they might be in a little hot water. Legally speaking, the report via CNET, is a little vague as to what the repercussions could be. What is clear that Facebook does have some questions to answer. Unconfirmed reports have suggested that over $100,000 of advertising sold on the social media site was to unconfirmed Russian sources.

Knowing or not, if Facebook did contribute to affecting the US election, they mind find themselves, as a best-case scenario, under much higher scrutiny moving forward. Not helpful when Mark Zuckerberg keeps hinting at a political career. As is Trump wasn’t bad enough, Lord save us from President Zuckerberg.

Jonsbo Introduces VF-1 Video Card Cooler

Case and cooling manufacturer Jonsbo has an odd new product out called the VF-1. Unlike their usual coolers, this one is specifically for video cards and it even looks like one. The VF-1 has an  anodized aluminium magnesium alloy enclosure, making it a sleek looking product. It actually resembles an XFX RX 480 video card on first glance, except with three fans and without the silver accent. It installs on the PC by taking up an expansion slot, sitting below the video card providing additional cooling.

Jonsbo VF-1 Features

Jonsbo Introduces VF-1 Video Card Cooler

The  Jonsbo VF-1 provides supplemantary cooling via three 80mm fans, claiming a further temperature drop of 5 degrees Celcius. Which actually sounds unimpressive. Hopefully, it does a lot better on cards with a blower style cooling.

Normally smaller 80mm fans are loud, but the VF-1 apparently only operates at 18dBA at its maximum 1500 RPM rotational speed. It uses a SATA power connector instead of a fan header so users can hook it up directly to most power supply units. The SATA power connector also allows the VF-1 to have some fancy RGB LED lighting on the side.

The VF-1 measures 134 x 270mm and is only 20mm thick. The aluminium shroud material itself is 1.2mm thick. However, it only weighs 372 grams, so there are no worries about sagging over time. It also comes with a dummy PCIe connector for added weight support.

Well, that’s comforting!

How would you like to feel old? Well, if I was to tell you Windows XP is nearly 20 years old, how would that make you feel? Not great I imagine, particularly if you are still using it. I daresay, however, that you would feel massively more concerned if you were to learn that a major UK police force is still using XP. Well, I’m afraid that is exactly what I am telling you as a recent report via the BBC has confirmed that the Manchester Police Force is still using Windows XP.

The report has confirmed that the Manchester Police force still has over 1,500 computers which are operating on the defunct operation system.

We recently reported how amazingly, Windows XP still had a significant market share (just under 7%). I have to admit I wasn’t expecting part of that market share to be a major metropolitan police force. I was thinking more laptops or Dell’s your parents might own.

windows xp

Do people really still use Windows XP?

Released in 2001, and much to Microsoft’s chagrin, Windows XP just will not die. Long after people moved (or ran) away from Vista, the migration did not really begin until Windows 7. With a similarly sub-par response to Windows 8, offering 10 as a free upgrade still didn’t get as many to move over as Microsoft would have liked.

Despite continuing XP 3 years ago, even Microsoft still occasionally required to update it.

Following the recent WannaCry attack, Microsoft was forced to attempt to secure XP based on the simple fact that so many continue to use it. At the time, the NHS was one of the most infamously affected.

The obvious concern is that something as significant as a major police force continues to use a redundant operating system. Are the details these computers hold really. safe?

Dr Steven Murdoch, an online security expert at University College London has said: “So, if the [police’s] Windows XP computers are exposed to the public internet, then that would be a serious concern. If they are isolated, that would be less of a worry. The problem is still that if something gets into a secure network, it might then spread. That is what happened in the NHS with the recent Wannacry outbreak.”

Do you think its right that a major police force is still using XP? Let us know in the comments!

Overwatch 1.15.0.1 Patch Brings Junkertown Map to Life

Blizzard is releasing patch 1.15.0.1 for Overwatch today, finally making the Junkertown map playable to the public. This Australia-based playground for the escort gametype map was introduced at Gamescom in August. Junkertown also happens to be the hometown of characters Roadhog and Junkrat.

As expected, Junkertown is a harsh and unforgiving environment in the Australian Outback. Its construction is made from the remains of a destroyed omnium robot factory. Moreover, a band of lawless scavengers known as Junkers call it home. The map also has a massive gladiatorial arena called the Scrapyard.

Overwatch Patch Changes Mercy and D.Va as Well

Overwatch 1.15.0.1 Patch Brings Junkertown Map to Life

In addition to the new Junkertown map, the patch also makes significant changes to popular characters Mercy and D.Va.

Mercy’s ultimate ability ‘Resurrect’ is no more. In its place is her new ultimate Valkyrie, turning herself into a flying resurrection machine with infinite ammo. The damage boost in this mode does not carry forward from the Public Test Region version of the ultimate however.

D.Va’s Defense Matrix receives some nerfing. However, she gains a new ability called Micro Missiles which she can use any time. Blizzard also gave her the ability to use Fusion Cannons while flying.

Even Reinhardt got an update, although not as drastic as Mercy’s or D.Va’s. Players can now rotate the camera while his shield is up. Several other changes include updates to the Mystery Heroes gametypeand other bug fixes. To see the full list, read over the full patch notes at Battle.net.

Raijintek Introduces Iris 12 Rainbow RGB Fan Series

Case and cooling manufacturer Raijintek is joining the RGB craze with the release of their own RGB LED fans. Using the name Iris 12 Rainbow, the new fan series illuminates well as a system fan and is highly functional as well. Using an efficient 11-blade design, the Iris 12 Rainbow produces 1.7mmH2O of static air pressure and 42.17 CFM at 1800 RPM. The blade’s unique staggered tip, curving forward leading edge makes this possible. The fan also makes use of hydraulic bearing which has a longer lifespan than sleeve and rifle-bearing fans.

Raijintek Introduces Iris 12 Rainbow RGB Fan Series

There are 15 pieces of RGB LED in the surrounding round frame. This shoots down to the transparent fan blade, creating for some lovely dispersed colours. The round frame also has a diffuser pre-installed so that the LED is uniform and does not have that unsightly very pointed LED look. The round frame also comes with rubber-padding on the vibration mounts. This minimizes noise and minimizes damage to the case when overtightened.

Raijintek IRIS 12 RGB Available in Three Variants

Raijintek Introduces Iris 12 Rainbow RGB Fan Series

The Raijintek IRIS 12 RGB is available as a single, dual or triple fan pack. Each fan has a 4-pin PWN connector with a 6V starting voltage. It also has a separate 4-pin RGB connector which plugs into a 6-port RGB LED hub available in the dual or triple pack version. It also comes with a remote control, so users can change the colours without having to fiddle with any desktop software.

So far, Raijintek is only announcing a 120mm version without an IRIS 14 version yet.

D-Link Exo AC2600

Today we’re taking a look at D-Link‘s newest router which doesn’t look as impressive as some of the ones we’ve tested in the past, but that’s something you shouldn’t be fooled by. The AC2600 EXO MU-MIMO Wi-Fi router packs the latest technology in a simple exterior.

Wireless Features

The wireless performance is the main reason why people upgrade their router and when the DIR-882 becomes relevant. D-Link gave the DIR-882 a great set of capabilities, starting with the AC2600 rating. With it, the router can deliver up to 800 Mbps on the 2.4GHz band and 1733 Mbps on the 5GHz band. This is

Plain performance is one thing, another is actually reaching the connected devices effectively. D-Link applied several technologies to make sure that this happens at all times. The router features a MU-MIMO functionality along with a 4×4 data stream setup.

D-Link DIR-882 Photo view front angle righrt

Wireless Coverage

The MU-MIMO technology allows multiple devices to get high-bandwidth Wi-Fi signals at the same time, but that’s just the beginning. The antennas on the DIR-882 might be fixed, but they’re categorised as high-power antennas.

Streaming the signal into every direction would reduce the bandwidth where it’s actually needed, and that’s where the smart beamforming comes into play. With it, the router will direct the bandwidth towards your devices as you move around your home.

D-Link DIR-882 Photo view front

Wired Network and Internet Features

Wireless connections are great, at least where cables aren’t an option. Still, the wired connections are important. The D-Link DIR-882 EXO router has a standard setup in this regard with four Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports and one Gigabit WAN port.

D-Link DIR-882 Photo view rear

Router Hardware

At the core of the router is a dual-core CPU which should be able to handle the transfer load quite well. You get both a USB 3.0 and a USB 2.0 port with the DIR-882, allowing you to connect and share USB drives. Other physical features include buttons for the WPS function and one to turn the Wi-Fi on and off.

Feature Highlights

  • Dual-Band AC2600 technology
  • 4×4 MU-MIMO Setup
  • Traffic prioritisation
  • Band Steering and Smart Beam
  • USB 3.0 and DLNA compatible
  • Parental controls, VPN, and Guest Networks

Google Pixelbook Details Leak Ahead of October 4 Launch

As it turns out, the Home Mini and the Pixel 2 are not the only hardware Google intends to announce on October 4. According to Droid Life, Google also intends to announce their new Pixelbook laptop. It is essentially a high-end Chromebook with stylus support. While most Chromebooks have lower resolution screens and lower-spec hardware, they are usually priced accordingly. That is because they are mostly for basic or student use. The upcoming Pixelbooks however come at a much higher price and intends to take on Apple’s Macbooks.

Google Chromebook Pixel Features

The original Chromebook Pixel debuted in 2013 with an Intel Core i5 processor and either 32GB or 64GB SSD. It also makes use of a 2,560 × 1,700 resolution display and ran the proprietary Chrome OS. The new update however will be available with 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB SSDs. The new model will also bring stylus support and have a screen that fully folds. Essentially turning it into a tablet.

Pricing and Availability

The 128GB version will start at $1,199, followed by the 256GB model at $1,399 and the 512GB option at $1,749. The stylus pen is available separately for $99. As for availability, more details will surface once Google makes the official announcement on October 4.

Trailer for New Tomb Raider Movie Reboot Released

Photos of Alicia Vikander surfaced several months ago, looking a lot like the younger Tomb Raider from the 2013 game reboot. That game reboot successfully relaunched the ailing franchise so it only makes sense to reboot the movie series as well. The reboot itself is an origin story of sorts for the Lara Croft character. So it helps to introduce new audiences if the storyline starts at the beginning of her career, before she even became the “Tomb Raider” version of Lara Croft.

Angelina Jolie made the Lara Croft character popular back in the 00’s, spawning two movies in total. However, she is now 42-years old and unable to play the younger Tomb Raider on the reboot. Alicia Vikander looks very suitable for the role and she even looks a lot like the younger Lara in the 2013 game reboot. The movie story follows the template of the 2013 game closely, marooning the young heroine in a dangerous island.

Forza MotorSport 7 Demo Now Available for PC and Xbox One

Forza MotorSport 7 is providing a free demo for players to try out on the PC and Xbox One starting September 19. The game itself is not on the calendar for release until October 3rd. So this demo should let players know what to expect once the full version hits the stores.

The demo lets players choose between driving the Porsche 911 GT2 RS on the Jebel Hafeet pass, or the Mercedes Tankpool on the Mugello circuit. A third option of trying out the Nissan Nismo GT-4 LM on the Nurburgring is also available. As you might have guessed, you cannot just simple pick a car and terrain individualy on the demo. Which is unfortunate, but not a big problem worth crying about.

System Requirements

Forza MotorSport 7 Demo Now Available for PC and Xbox One

The system requirements are reasonable. Playing 60fps at 1080p requires a Core i5-4460 or FX-8350 CPU with 8GB of RAM and at least a GTX 670/1050Ti or RX 560 equivalent. If you want to push the game at 4K resolution however, prepare to have at least a core i7-6700K processor or a Ryzen 7 CPU. Pushing 60fps at 4K will also require a GTX 1080 or RX Vega 64 graphics card, plus 16GB of system RAM.

Forza MotorSport 7 also supports ultra-wide 21:9 resolutions on the PC, as well as several driving peripherals. Developer Turn Ten actually has a list of all supported controllers on their website.

You can download the demo or pre-order the game at the Microsoft Xbox store: https://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/forza-7

Square Enix Reveals 'Left Alive' Survival Action Mech Shooter

https://www.eteknix.com/category/square-enix/Square Enix just made a big announcement during their 2017 PlayStation Press Conference in Japan. An accompanying teaser trailer for ‘Left Alive’ shows the iconic game developer’s take on a survival action shooter. This is not just any survival action shooter game of course, since the teaser video also shows massive mech’s being flown by helicopters.

If that is not enough to excite you as a Square Enix fan then be glad to hear that Metal Gear character designer Yoji Shinkawa is on-board the project. Joining Shinkawa for the directorial post is none other than Toshifumi Nabeshima. He is bringing his experience from Armored Core and Chromehounds into the new mecha shooter game. Also onboard is Takayuki Yanase, whose character design resume includes work in Ghost in the Shell: Arise, Mobile Suit Gundam 00, and Xenoblade Chronicles X. Needless to say, Square Enix is bringing out the big guns to make this the mecha game to play.

The teaser trailer otherwise does not show much, but the devastated view of a city should give an idea of the in-game scenes. It is a survival action shooter after all, so expect the landscapes to be war-torn or desolate. The game itself is not due to hit the PC and PS4 until 2018. More details are still forthcoming. Although the official Steam page for Left Alive is already up.

VideoCardz.com has an exclusive look at the upcoming Biostar RACING Z370GT7 motherboard. It supports the upcoming Intel Coffee-Lake processors unlike existing Z270 mainboards. That is despite having a physically identical socket. Most manufacturers appear to be content with a simple palette change for their Z370 offerings, but it seems Biostar is approaching it differently. Gone are much of the racing theme aesthetics of their Z270 and Z170 line. Including the carbon fiber pattern and checkered flag silkscreen. Instead, the new RACING Z370GT7 is sporting a black and gold theme.

New Look for Biostar?

Biostar Racing Z370GT7 Motherboard Photos Surface

The new color theme is similar to the Biostar X299 motherboard shown at Computex. Although the pattern this time uses more straight lines, and there are a lot more gold. Biostar is not completely abandoning the RGB LED features however, with the IO cover having multiple LEDs lining the side. What is also interesting with the Z370GT7 layout is how the SATA ports are not at an angle. All six are right below the 24-pin power and beside the DIMM slot. Only the CMOS battery is present where the typical SATA port location is. There are two M.2 slots available as well, both with built-in heatsinks that match the color scheme.

Google Home Mini Arriving on October 4

Google is set to announce their upcoming Pixel 2 phone in San Francisco on October 4. However, this is not the only product which will debut on stage. According to Droid-life, a more compact version of the Google Home is also due to arrive at that date. The official name so far is “Google Home Mini”, simple and apt to what it actually is.

The rounded puck size device will be available in three colors initially:  Charcoal, Chalk (looks grayish) and Coral (which looks reddish pink). Despite the compact size, this small device does not appear to be wireless, but will have a thin wire sticking out at the back. As to its features, it can set reminders, grab news and schedule activities just like a full-size Google Home device. It can take voice commands and would be able to interact with other devices such as a Chromecast.

Due to the compact size, almost the entire top appears to be a speaker with a cloth mesh cover. The base is minimal and has matching color with the top. With exception of the Chalk color which appears to have a white color base. There are four multi-color indicator LEDs at the center, similarly found on the Google Home.

Pricing and Availability

Unlike Google Home which retails for $130 USD, the Google Home Mini is much more affordable at only $49 USD. This puts it at a competitive spot to go head-to-head with the Amazon Echo Dot at $49.

Battlefield 1 Battlefest: Revolution Event Starts September 19

To celebrate the launch of their latest ‘In the Name of the Tsar’ DLC, Battlefield 1 is hosting the Battlefest: Revolution event. During September 19th through the 30th, the DLC is available completely for free. This lets players try it out and enjoy it for two weeks before buying. This update brings four new maps including Lupkow Pass, Albion, Galicia, Brusilov Keep, Volga River and Tsaritsyn. It also adds an exciting supply drop game mode, letting players fight over resources dropped by planes. Moreover, DICE is adding female characters fitting the timeline and setting. This also includes 11 new Russian-themed weapons, vehicles including the Ilya-Muromets Heavy Bomber, and a powerful new stationary weapon.

Share Battlefield Moments and Win Prizes

Battlefield 1 Battlefest: Revolution Event Starts September 19

In addition to the celebration, DICE wants players to capture their favorite moments and share them via video. Doing so will qualify players for entry to win three HDR Samsung monitors. Why HDR? Well, the latest update from DICE just happens to bring new HDR support on all PC and console platforms as well. This improves the visuals even further if you have a monitor that supports it. By September 30, you just might if your Battlefield 1 video is one of the top three most popular.

The first place winner gets a Samsung 49-inch HDR display worth $1499 USD. The second place gets a 32-inch HDR monitor, while the 3rd place gets a 27-inch HDR display. DICE will be selecting 12 winners in total to win various prize packs.

EFF Resigns From W3C Over New Web DRM

The Electronic Frontier Foundation is resigning from the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) over its decision to standardise HTML5 DRM. The W3C made Encrypted Media Extensions (EME) web browser DRM standard, despite objections from within and outside of the organisation. The non-profit digital rights group the EFF, in particular, protested the move for over four years as unethical. Despite protestations, the W3C – lead by WWW inventor Tim Berners-Lee – approved EME. Now, in an open letter, the EFF announces that it is leaving the W3C in protest.

The EFF’s Cory Doctorow signs off the letter:

“Effective today, EFF is resigning from the W3C.”

EFF Resigns From W3C

In the letter, Doctorow explains the EFF offered to compromise its position on EME if W3C provided certain caveats. However, corporate W3C members and leadership remained “wedded” to enforcing EME. In lieu of any accommodation on behalf of W3C, the EFF is severing its ties to the organisation, vowing to continue the fight.

As Doctorow writes:

“Today, the W3C bequeaths an legally unauditable attack-surface to browsers used by billions of people. They give media companies the power to sue or intimidate away those who might re-purpose video for people with disabilities. They side against the archivists who are scrambling to preserve the public record of our era. The W3C process has been abused by companies that made their fortunes by upsetting the established order, and now, thanks to EME, they’ll be able to ensure no one ever subjects them to the same innovative pressures.

So we’ll keep fighting to fight to keep the web free and open. We’ll keep suing the US government to overturn the laws that make DRM so toxic, and we’ll keep bringing that fight to the world’s legislatures that are being misled by the US Trade Representative to instigate local equivalents to America’s legal mistakes.”

Pepe the Frog – Unofficial Mascot of the Alt-Right

Similar to the troll face, Pepe the Frog has taken the internet over in recent years. Becoming the unofficial mascot of the alt-right, the meme is popularly displayed across various forums and YouTube videos.

Persons such as  Richard Spencer, Mike Cernovich, Milo Yiannopolous and even the Trump subreddit have seen DMCA action taken against them for the usage of the frog.

Matt Furie, the original creator of Pepe the Frog launched various DMCA and copyright claims on Monday in an attempt to re-take possession of his creation. Claims have also been submitted against Amazon for use of the meme without permission reports CNET.

You would almost think Matt Furie worked for Disney.

This wouldn’t be the first time someone declared a war on memes. You can read here how Russia did following Putin memes.

pepe the frog

Why has he issued DMCA against Pepe the Frog?

Well, firstly, I imagine that he feels that creative control of his character has been taken from him. Secondly, I would imagine that he may (or may not) wish to be associated with the groups which have adopted Pepe the Frog as their unofficial mascot. However, thirdly, and I feel mostly, he’s angry at not making any money off the frog.

Memes are a controversial factor in online factors. Most would consider the use of a character, specifically as a meme to be covered under ‘fair usage’. Reddit even created a stock-market based on a memes popularity.

In a recent spate of high-profile DMCA claims, you may recall last week how PewDiePie found himself in hot water.

In most instances, I think people would agree that a meme would fall under fair usage. There is, however, a critical factor here. Pepe the Frog has been associated with white supremacist groups. I will say, at this point, I’m not touching discussing the alt-right with a barge pole. We at eTeknix are a tech site, not a political group.

Given these associations, Matt Furie might ironically find his request granted simply based on association.

What do you think? Does a meme reflect fair usage or should artists have some control over their creations particularly when taken by groups they may disapprove of? Let us know in the comments!

Deepcool Launches Captain 360 EX White RGB AIO Cooler

Deepcool released the 240mm version of their Captain EX RGB series last month. Now they are following it up with a larger 360mm version. This AIO cooler series was originally available in black only with matching black fans. They already have a white version of their regular non-RGB Captain 360EX so this was an easy transition. As the name says, it has RGB LED lighting on the pump block.

Deepcool Launches Captain 360 EX White RGB AIO Cooler

The Captain 360 EX White RGB uses the same “Steampunk” engine core design of the Captain series. However, the pump block body and the fan frame are matching white. This is in contrast with the black blades and black tubing on the radiator. These neutral colors also provide a neutral palette for the RGB color option on the block.

Deepcool Launches Captain 360 EX White RGB AIO Cooler

Although the fans do not have RGB LED fan blades, Deepcool provides an RGB LED controller plus RGB LED strip with each Captain 360 EX White RGB AIO package. This lets users mount a strip inside their case for interior mood lighting.

Deepcool Captain 360 EX White RGB Pricing and Availability

The Deepcool Captain 360 EX White RGB is available starting September 2017. It will only cost $20 more than the Captain 240EX RGB, $129.99 vs $149.99 USD.

Dark Souls 'Rekindled Edition' Mod Massively Overhauls Game

Dark Souls may be five years old now, but a healthy modding community keeps it fresh over the years. There is even a  “Rekindled Edition” mod, consisting of over 350 tweaks, altering its base gameplay. The Rekindled Edition mod itself, drew inspiration from another earlier mod called “Alternative Starting Classes” by McJ0hns0n  but is a lot more complex.

According to the mod’s author LordofSandvich, he started modding aspects of the game which he initially found odd. However, describing all the changes implemented takes over 16 pages long and is close to 7,000 words. The mod changes armor, weapons, shops, items, enemies, bosses, and more. It even introduces some buffs and nerfs to the gameplay.

Future Plans for Dark Souls

Dark Souls 'Rekindled Edition' Mod Massively Overhauls Game

The mod so far has over 1,800 downloads with 43 endorsements. The latest version is 2.11 but if that isn’t enough, LordofSandvich also plans to introduce more weapon, shield and spell rebalancing. He also plans to make status effects more viable against bosses and fix small descriptive texts, making them more lore correct.

Even if you are not a Dark Souls fan, you have to admire the modding community’s dedication to the game. This is the kind of effort which extends the lifetime of a product. It also increases the value of the game for the consumer significantly, without charging a dime.

RX Vega Custom Cards Delayed Until Mid-October?

AMD launched RX Vega over a month ago, but we’re still waiting for custom partner iterations of the graphics cards. Indeed, if new reports are to be believed, we’ll be waiting even longer. According to Hardware.fr, only Asus is ready to announce its own AIB (a triple-fan Strix). However, no other AMD partners have cards close to release. In fact, the same report claims the soonest we’ll see a custom card is mid-October.

RX Vega Custom Cards Delayed

AMD needs a win for RX Vega about now. Despite great anticipation, Vega’s launch disappointed many. In particular, both lacklustre performance and scant availability incited much dismay. As a result, a bunch of custom RX Vega cards – pushing Vega’s capability to its limit. Hardware.fr’s report, though, suggests AMD will be waiting a while.

According to Hardware.fr, Sapphire, MSI, and Gigabyte are not planning any imminent RX Vega releases. One unnamed partner even told the French tech site that any such launch is not possible until mid-October, at the earliest.

Mid-October? Maybe Not

The exception, though, could be the Asus ROG Strix RX Vega 64 OC Edition. Last month, Asus announced plans to release its Vega 64 card mid-September. However, the card’s official page now reads “early September”. Some reviews already possess sample versions of the card, according to WCCFTech. So, any day now, surely.

The PC Master Race has got to wait

Monster Hunter World is, to many, one of the most anticipated upcoming titles. We speculated earlier in the year that the ‘west’ needed a proper Monster Hunter game. While the Wii has been the Monster Hunter home for a while, it’s lack of resources hasn’t given us the title most fans felt the franchise deserved.

With the official trailer launching last month, we were amazed at how awesome it looked. It really seemed that they were pushing out the graphical boat on this title. Given the franchises amazing popularity in Japan, we expected nothing less. This game deserves to be both amazing to play and beautiful to look at.

Following a speculative article earlier in the year, we were, in addition, thrilled to hear that this was going to get a full-blown PC release.

Well, the news gets even better, for console users at least, as we finally have a release date.

monster hunter world

So, when can we expect Monster Hunter World?

Well, I won’t keep you in suspense. The console release, for PS4 and Xbox One, is confirmed January 26th, 2018 reports PCgames.

Unfortunately, however, Capcom has cited that a simple lack of manpower means that a PC release will not be due until later in the year. This is, in itself rather frustrating.

The franchise itself has always stagnated on console. Admittedly it has had the limited technology of Nintendo contend with, however, let’s be honest here, the PC is the best and most logical home for Monster Hunt World. The interface has never entirely suited console controllers and the accessibility of keyboard and mouse always made the most sense.

Unfortunately, we do not, at present have any release date for the PC version. Therefore, the delay is rather frustrating, however, as long as it does come, I’m sure we’ll forgive Capcom. Unless of course the PC version just ends up being a sloppy port. My journalistic knives are sharpening in preparation for that!

Check out the new trailer below!

DRAM Prices Continue to Rise

DRAM Prices have been increasing at an alarming rate in recent years. We have seen the price nearly double in the last 12 months alone and things are not set to get any better. You might be wishing you had gone for that upgrade as prices show no indication of stabilizing.

When I upgraded to a new system a few months back, I remember cringing at the time at just how expensive DRAM had gotten. Don’t get me wrong, good quality high-end DRAM was never cheap, but it rightly held the title for a long time of being the best inexpensive upgrade you could do. Yes, solid state drives have, in my opinion at least, stolen that title as their prices have, in contrast, have come down a little, but still, the amount in which DRAM has rocketed in the last year is eye-watering and in a report by PCGames, the prices could set to top over 40% by Christmas.

Earlier this year, we touched on the possibility of the price increase. Manufacturing issues have been a factor, including limits in the physical supply of the components necessary to make the memory.

Even in recent months, supply hasn’t been as high as the market would like.

As the old business adage goes, the price is dictated by supply and demand and at the moment, demand is a lot higher than supply.

People just can’t get enough of that RGB memory goodness.

Will the prices ever regulate?

It’s difficult to say. For years suppliers squeezed RAM manufacturers for competitive prices when the supply massively outstripped supply. Now, the boot is very firmly on the other foot. As such, companies are looking for a little bit of payback.

Corsairs excellent Vengeance DRAM has been one of the major highlights of this increase. A couple years ago, you would have been able to pick up 8gb for about £40-£50. These days, good luck getting it for under £90.

If you want to get that memory upgrade, it might be best to do it now. Clearly holding out for a lower price could see you have a much longer wait that you might have expected.

And yes, I did say Christmas. Now I’ve said it, it’s official. Christmas is coming.

You (may not) have mail!

Since Monday, a growing number of reports has suggested that not all is well at Microsoft’s e-mail service, Outlook. The major issue with the service is that it hasn’t been entirely clear about not working. Users have reported sending e-mails and them simply squatting in the ‘draft’ or ‘outbox’ for hours.

On Monday afternoon, Downdetector reports of the Outlook service spiked at over 1500 notifications and although the figures have calmed down since it seems that for some the problem is persisting.

A subtle issue causing big problems!

Many of the complaints have been levelled at the fact that many users have not even noticed that it wasn’t working until several hours later. A report by the BBC suggests that for many the e-mails sent have not been easy to identify as unsent.

Given that Outlook represents one of the 3 major free e-mail providers, the others being Gmail and Yahoo, such disruption of service for many has proven highly inconvenient. Yahoo recently fell in for criticism when it was revealed that e-mails were monitored.

We shouldn’t complain too much. Particularly considering that Outlook is a free service. I am, however, more than certain that this will have some looking to switch their e-mail providers. Funny isn’t it though that switching your e-mail these days is a more daunting process than swapping your bank account. I have an e-mail account from nearly 20 years ago. Despite its age and floods of junk mail, I just can’t bear to part with it.

Funny isn’t it though that switching your e-mail these days is a more daunting process than swapping your bank account. I have an e-mail account from nearly 20 years ago that, despite floods of junk, I can’t bear to let it go.

Is Microsoft working on a fix?

Despite initial delays, Microsoft has finally confirmed that there is an issue with Outlook. A representative has said: “Intermittent connectivity is affecting customers in some European countries, which we are working to resolve as soon as possible.”

Microsoft has also confirmed that a temporary solution is in place, with a permanent fix on the way. Given how important the Outlook service is to Microsoft, I would expect the fix to come fairly quickly.

It is, at the very least, a pleasant alternative to hearing the usual story of a hacker compromising the accounts. You may recall an instance where a hacker sold details of over 270 million compromised e-mail accounts.

If you are still having problems, you are one of the unlucky few who may have to wait. At least until the permanent fix. The vast majority of users will not be affected by this issue, that being said, it might be worth checking given the benign nature in which this issue is presenting itself.

Hydra is a relatively new brand, but it’s one worth keeping in mind. Overclockers UK announced that they’re now stocking the brand and thereby bringing it to the island. Hydra is a rising brand in the world of computer technology, aimed at combining top-tier engineering and a wide range of customisation’s to offer you high quality, enthusiast grade products.

The Hydra Desk

You’ll already have guessed what the highlights of this chassis are by its name. We’ve seen case-desks in the past from other manufacturers, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t room for another one. Especially such a beauty as the Hydra Desk.

There is an impressive amount of space for your components in the desk. You can install two complete systems with impressive custom loop abilities. Up to five 360mm radiators and a 480mm radiator can be mounted, or you could install 28 drives for an ultimate storage experience. And that’s just the start.

A motherboard tray comes pre-installed and holds Mini-ITX, Micro-ATX, ATX- or E-ATX format motherboards. A second tray for a second system is an optimal extra purchase. There’s space for two power supplies which is important. One might not be enough to run all the hardware it’s possible to install. Those who wish to run an air-cooled system can install CPU coolers with a height of up to 155mm below the glass lid.

Call of Duty: Word War II Story Trailer Released

Activision released the story trailer for their Call of Duty: World War II, showing what single-player action can fans look forward to. The graphics and artwork looks quite impressive as usual. The story follows a US army private named “Red” Daniels, as he lands at Normandy and battles his way through to the heart of Germany. Other than Normandy, some familiar settings such as the Hurtgen Forest and the Battle of the Bulge are present.

The return to World War II  is not all about loud explosions and gunfire. Activision and Sledgehammer games has been very open about wanting to show the human side of the war as well. In fact, the trailer shows a Jewish soldier trying to hide his identity from his captors. Making for a very tense scene.

As the game approaches release, Sledgehammer games also promises much more releases and single-player reveals. Those who are itching to try out the multiplayer aspect of the game will be glad to hear that the open beta will begin soon, starting September 29.

EVGA EPowerV Overclocking VRM Now Available

The fifth generation of the EVGA EPOWER board VRM is now available. This little modular add onlets overclockers provide clean additional power for both motherboards and video cards. With its 12+2 phase extreme power design for VCORE and VMEM. Components will not starve and can be pushed much further than what is available by default.  Powering the board are three standard 6-pin PCI-E power connectors.

Integrated EVGA EVBOT and Other Features

In addition to simply providing power, the EVGA EPOWER V has onboard buttons and has adjustable voltage control. Users can adjust the VMEM from a range of 600 to 2300 mV. With a rated capacity of 80A and maximum peak capacity of 90A at 1.9V output voltage. The Vcore allows for the same 600mV minimum although it maxes out at 2000mV. The capacity rating is 600A with a maximum peak capacity of 620A at 1.85V output voltage.  There are on-board LED display to indicate these settings of course.

Users can even use the USB 3.1 Type-C port to connect the EPOWER V board to a PC. This allows for software control for fine tuning on the desktop.

For more old-scho0l users, there are droop, force and offset voltage switches available on-board as well. ProbeIt connectors are also present to painlessly hook up multimeters for accurate readings.

Last but not the least, there are two 4-pin PWM fan headers on-board as well to quickly attach active cooling solutions.

Pricing and Availability

Users can now purchase the EVGA EPOWER V VRM via the EVGA store for $249.99 USD.

lacie 2big dock

It has been a while since the public first got to see the LaCie 2big Dock and now it is as close as ever. LaCie announced both the pricing and the availability of these new units which I’m sure a lot of people have been waiting anxiously for.

2big Dock Pricing and Availability

Normally we put pricing and availability at the bottom, after all, we have to tell you what it is before the price even becomes relevant. But since this article is about just that, we’ll move it to the top.

The official availability is set for October, with no specific date of the month given. That’s just around the corner, so the wait is close to over. As for the price, that depends on the amount of capacity you wish it to come with. All LaCie devices are pre-installed, so there’s no empty model. The MSRPs for the 8TB, 12TB, 16TB and 20TB models are £599, £729, £929, and £1149.

What makes the 2big Dock Unique?

At a first glance, the LaCie 2big is no different than any other external storage drive, but that shouldn’t fool you. At its base, it is a 2-bay external storage drive, but it’s so much more. It is also a full docking station at the same time.

The 2big Dock connects through Thunderbolt 3 which offers 40 Gbps throughput and daisy chaining. With it, you get so many options to connect everything with a single cable. With that in mind, the 2big Dock is an optimal solution for those with portable Thunderbolt 3 compatible systems.

The 2big Dock features USB connectivity, card readers, and even a DisplayPort. It can also charge your notebook at the same time as it serves you with its functionality. Pretty much an optimal solution.

Other key features include

  • Seagate IronWolf Pro enterprise-class drives and RAID optimisation for superior power management and reliability
  • LaCie RAID Manager that easily monitors system’s health with audible alarm and email alerts
  • Efficient cooling with aluminium enclosure and thermoregulated fan for professional reliability
  • A five-year limited warranty

QNAP TS-x31P2 TS-431X2 series 1

QNAP released two three new NAS devices in two series, all aimed at the SMB and SOHO users wishing for a powerful yet affordable system. The TS-x31P2 launches as a 2-bay and 4-bay model while the TS-431X2 only comes in a 4-bay version. Both series support Snapshots, allowing users to easily restore the NAS to a previous state in the event of an unexpected NAS failure or when struck by a ransomware attack (The Snapshots feature will be available from QTS 4.3.4). The TS-431X2 also features a 10GbE SFP+ port for empowering containerised applications by using 10GbE networks.

Common Aspects of the New Devices

There are several things that all these new devices have in common, starting with the CPU. Inside is a quad-core AnnapurnaLabs Alpine AL-314 processor which has a speed of 1.7 GHz processor. The processor is a lot cheaper when compared to an Intel processor, but it still delivers a great performance.

The drive bays are all hot-swappable and support both 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch HDDs and SSDs. There are three USB 3.0 ports for external devices and two RJ45 Gigabit Ethernet ports.

QNAP TS-431X2 vs TS-x31P2

The main feature setting the TS-431X2 NAS apart from the TS-x31P2 series is the addition of a 10GbE SFP+ port. Such a connection allows for much better connections when transferring large files or collaborating or huge projects with a lot of people.

The network options aren’t the only difference. There’s more memory in the TS-431X2 which comes pre-equipped with either 2GB or 8GB DDR3 RAM. The TS-x31P2 series is available with 1GB or 4GB memory.

“The quad-core processor on the TS-x31P2 and TS-431X2 allows users to experience a high level of performance and in turn enables performance-demanding functionality such as Snapshots to provide higher protection for NAS data. The ability to upgrade the RAM to 8GB RAM also provides users with the ability to futureproof their NAS for using extra containers and more productivity-boosting NAS apps,” said Dan Lin, Product Manager of QNAP.

You can check out the full details of the new units via the official product pages.
