Employees Fighting Back

After Telltale Games employees were unceremoniously made redundant recently without earlier notice or severance packages, the employees are fighting back through legal means. A class-action lawsuit by former employees is now in the hands of a federal court in San Francisco. The document claims that the dismissal did not come with a written notice as the government requires.

A federal law called the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification act (WARN) requires businesses with at least 100 full-time workers to provide a 60-day notification before any mass layoffs. This law specifically defines mass lay off as a reduction of 50 or more employees within a 3-day period, or 500 workers en masse. The state of California also has its own worker’s right laws which actually has a more stringent requirement when notifying employees of redundancies.

How Will This Lawsuit End?

According to the lawsuit, Telltale Games fired a total of 275 employees which includes layoffs that occurred on September 21. This number also includes the 25 employees which currently remain to finish the outstanding commitments in the studio.

Under the WARN act, Telltale Games will have to give the employees back pay and benefits. The amount includes each day (out of 60) they did not get an advance warning. Since Telltale did not give them any warning at all, then the company will have to pay the full 60-days. That is if the former employees win in court.

According to GameDaily, the company might mount reasonable defense against the WARN act citing “business circumstances”. Although the more stringent state worker laws in California does not feature the same clause which excuse their move.

RTX 2070 Availability Next Month

NVIDIA has confirmed via their social media accounts that the RTX 2070 graphics cards are coming out next month. That is despite delays with the shipping out of the RTX 2080 Ti, which is being pushed back by at least a week from earlier estimates.

The NVIDIA RTX 2070 is expected to be using the complete TU106 GPU. This has three Graphics Processing Clusters (GPC) which in turn have six Texture Processing Clusters (TPC) each. Each TPC have two Streaming Multiprocessors (SM) each, totalling 36 SMs across the GPU. The RTX 2070 will have a total of 2304 CUDA cores and 288 Tensor Cores. The memory configuration is similar to the RTX 2080 with 8GB of 14 Gb/s GDDR6 on a 256-bit memory bus. The big obvious difference being the lack of NVLink capability compared to the more powerful RTX models. That means no multi-GPU capability.

NVIDIA Confirms GeForce RTX 2070 Arrival Soon on October 17

The base clock speed for the FE model starts at 1410MHz and boosts up to 1710MHz. Although the reference RTX 2070 specs only boosts up to 1620MHz. Total memory bandwidth on this card is 448Gbps, which matches the RTX 2080 and is much higher than the GTX 1070 with GDDR5’s 256 Gbps .

How Much is the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070?

The MSRP starts at $499 USD with the Founder’s Edition priced at $599. Which is $200 less than the RTX 2080 Founder’s Edition. Furthermore, that is half the price of the RTX 2080 Ti Founder’s Edition card.

Intel Confirms 9000-Series Coffee Lake S CPUs Coming Soon

Intel Points Finger at Testing Resources

Due to issues with the 10n process, Intel has been struggling with a 14nm shortage. In the past month or so, the shortages have gotten pretty bad. So far, reports have indicated that the shortages are due to lack of 14nm production capacity. In a new twist, a new report suggests that there is more than one bottleneck. The new document points the finger at testing capacity for new chips as well.

Previously, the wafer shortage was at the top of the list. Due to both chipsets and larger CPUs hitting 14nm, there simply wasn’t enough wafers to go around. However, the report suggests that testing new chips is also a problem. To help meet this new demand, the company is expanding 14nm chip testing to facilities in Vietnam. Under the Copy Exactly! program, the quality should be consistent with current facilities.

Shortage Expected to Last Into 2019

One reason why testing is such a problem is that chips are beyond just CPUs. While the CPUs like Coffee Lake and Whiskey Lake are bigger and take more wafer space, smaller chips have their own issues. For one, small chips like modems all need testing before shipping. With increased modem sales to Apple and chipsets as well, testing these many small chips can be very resource intensive. More chips due to 14nm density also mean more fine cutting and dicing of the wafer as well. Delays in 10nm also may mean Intel underresourced 14nm testing facilities to prepare for the still nascent 10nm.

Overall, the shortage is expected to drive down PC sales as Intel can’t keep up with demand. This is likely due to higher prices for units that do ship as well as inability to actually deliver. This may help drive down other prices like DRAM, NAND and GPUs as overall demand slows down. Analysts expect the shortage to continue until at least Q1 2019 if not further. In my view, with the Whiskey Lake launch expected to exacerbate the problem, it may be a while before prices settle down.

A new horror game named Visage is coming out.

If you’re a fan of psychological horror games, then you’ll probably be pleased to find out about Visage. This title is being developed by SadSquare Studio, and it borrows heavily from the canceled Silent Hills P.T. game. The game is set in a very old house that is constantly changing in layout and appearance. Inside, you’ll face unspeakable horrors as you take on the role of Dwayne – a mysterious man haunted by entities of the past. As you progress through the game, you’ll learn more and more about the story, and you’ll strive to uncover an uncomfortable truth. In order to mark the game’s Early Access launch on October 2, the developers also released a new Visage trailer, which you can see below.

We can now play as Predator in GTA V.

We can play as a lot of famous characters in GTA V these days, as the modding community has invested a lot of time and effort into this particular game. Recently, we reported on a brand new mod that brings Magneto into the fold, and now, it’s Predator’s turn to wreak havoc on Los Santos. This new mod bears the signature of JulioNIB, and it includes most of Predator’s signature powers. We’re talking about using the hand blades, the shoulder cannon, cloak mode, and self-destructing. Moreover, players can use the Predator spear, but the famed hunter’s disk is not currently available.

How can I get my hands on this mod?

Well, this is the tricky part. Unfortunately, the mod’s creator has decided to place it behind a paywall. To be specific, you’ll have to become a Patron on Patreon in order to access JulioNIB’s mods. I’m not saying that they’re not worth it, as he’s been delivering some quality work for some time now. Ultimately, it falls to you to decide if you want to spend a bit of money in order to play as Predator in GTA V.

If you do decide to give this mod a try, you can download it right here.

Two More Z390 Options from ASUS

Videocardz.com has leaked out photos of ASUS‘ two upcoming Z390 chipset motherboards. Both are going to be under their Republic of Gamers Maximus line and will feature top of the line overclocking and performance features. These are the Maximus XI Extreme and Maximus XI Gene, marking the return of a beloved micro-ATX board series.

What Features Will These Maximus XI Motherboards Have?

The Maximus XI Extreme appears to have an E-ATX motherboard layout and is fully decked out with features. It even has an OLED screen above the rear IO shield displaying the CPU clock speed. Furthermore, it has dual 8-pin power, a DIMM.2 slot for ASUS’ new high-capacity RAM feature and the usual ROG on-board buttons.

Meanwhile, the Maximus XI Gene also has a DIMM.2 slot, and appears to double down on the M.2 slot feature by adding two more. These are covered with an M.2 shield and take up the space reserved for two additional DIMM slots. So this leaves the Maximus XI Gene with just two standard DDR4 DIMM slots for memory. ASUS also does away with two SATA ports, leaving this micro-ATX ROG board with four SATA 6G ports available. There is an RGB LED logo above the IO cover as well as on the chipset heatsink area.

According to VideoCardz.com, both motherboards will have support for the new double-capacity RAM support via G.SKILL and ZADAK RGB DC memories.

More details are sure to surface as the release date arrives closer.

2K Games Giving Back to the Fans

2K Games, publisher of NBA 2K19 is launching their new 2K Foundations program. The goal of this new charitable program is to rejuvenate rejuvenate basketball courts in 12 US cities. This includes Cincinnati, Baltimore, Los Angeles, Chicago and Cleveland within its first year of operation.

“2K Foundations is inspired by the basketball community and passionate NBA 2K fans who have been enthusiastic about their love for the game over the last two decades,” said Jason Argent, Senior Vice President of Basketball Operations for NBA 2K. “Basketball has been so good to us, and we want to pay it forward to the communities that need it most, by helping to enhance the lives of youth both on the court and in the classroom.”

In each of the cities, 2K will also collaborate with locals and other institutions to bring each project to life. Project Backboard and local artist Adrian Gaither for instance are on-board for the Cincinnati project.

Is It All About Basketball?

The focus of the program is not just on improving basketball courts. Apparently, it also involves improving community learning centers as well. This in turn will enable STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education programming for inner-city youth.

Microsoft will partner with 2K and lend their support by outfitting Xbox One S gaming stations and other equipment in each of the locations as well.

Continually Expanding Online Arcade Museum

The Internet Archive recently further expanded their massive arcade game collection. Now adding 1,100 more arcade games to their repository as the online museum approaches its 4th year collecting games. The collection of working arcade machines run in modern browsers and is done in collaboration with the MAME emulator team. Furthermore, through the Emscripten conversion process, it allows the Internet Archive team to go through more titles and add them to the site.

Many of the recent additions are from the 1990s all the way up to the early 2000’s. This is the era when arcade machines both”became significantly more complicated and graphically rich” according to the Archive’s press release. Adding that this is also when arcade games were “suffering from the ever-present and home-based video game consoles that would come to dominate gaming.”

Even hardcore gamers might have missed many of these arcade games due. Especially due to dwindling number of arcades and lower distribution numbers. So the archive might be the first time many will be able to play these.

Where Can I Play These Games Online?

The Internet Archive’s online arcade museum is accessible through Archive.org. Users can browse or use the search function to find a specific game. The games run from within the web browser, so a moderately capable and updated version is necessary to play.

Default controls make use of the arrow keys to simulate joystick movement. The games also usually have the first and second start button set to the 1, and 2 keys respectively, with the 5 key for inserting coins.

Watercooled RTX 2080 Ti by Bitspower

GALAX has now opened up the pre-orders for their new RTX 2080 Ti graphics cards. This is not the same as the Hall of Fame air-cooled edition we saw earlier however. This is the new limited OC Lab Edition model which is top of the line, even among the Hall of Fame series.

Naturally, this kind of RTX 2080 Ti cannot just be cooled by a mere air cooler. So GALAX teams up with Bitspower and slaps their custom water block on it. This water block has a full view glass acrylic so users can still admire the gorgeous white PCB underneath. As well as see the cooling engine of course.

GALAX OC Lab Edition RTX 2080 Ti Video Card Now Available

The top end of the RTX 2080 Ti Hall of Fame OC Lab WC Edition appears to have a label piece which flips up or down. I’m not exactly sure what this is other than maybe for looks. The product page for the card itself does not reveal any further information regarding it.

How Much is This OC Lab edition RTX 2080 Ti?

It is now available for pre-order for $1799 USD directly from the GALAXstore. Obviously, that is quite high even for an RTX 2080 Ti. But like previous OC Lab Edition units, it has a binned GPU and made of the highest quality components. So if you are an overclocker who want the absolute top of the line video card, this might be for you.

Thermaltake Releases Larger 140mm Pure Plus RGB Fans

Same RGB Fan but Larger

Thermaltake has now released a 140mm variant of their previously released Pure Plus 12 RGB LED fan series. You can actually read the review of that 120mm radiator fan series here at eTeknix.com.

The Pure Plus 14 LED RGB radiator fan fits typical 140mm fan mounts. It uses premium hydraulic bearing for long-life as well as for providing low-noise performance at higher RPM. To further minimize noise, all the corner mounts have padding to absorb vibrations. It operates from 600 to ~1500 RPM producing a maximum static pressure of 1.62mm-H2O.

Just like the Pure Plus 12, users can get it in a 3-pack with a hardware controller included. The fan connects via USB 2.0 (9-pin header) internally, so it is compatible with any system. The package also comes with a 2-sided Velcro for mounting the controller internally, as well as all the necessary cables and screws to install the fans,

What Other Control Options Are Available?

Users can also control these fans using the TT RGB Plus App. Not only does this provide colour customization, but fan performance control and monitoring as well. Users can even control it wirelessly with the TT RGB app via their smartphone or tablet.

The Pure Plus series is also Amazon Alexa compatible. So users can issue voice commands even without touching anything.

Ripple (XRP) Cryptocurrency Sees Big Spike In 24 Hours

Following the rollercoaster, we saw with cryptocurrencies over 2017 (and the subsequent crash in January 2018) you might be forgiven if you’ve taken your eye off the ball. Now that the craze has died down a little only (mostly) the hardcore remaining in trading and mining.

In terms of currencies, there are 3 main ones to choose between; Bitcoin, Ethereum and Ripple. While the first two have seen a few ups and downs since the crash in January, Ripple has certainly presented itself as being the most volatile in both directions!

In the last 24 hours though, Ripple (XRP on the market) has seen an increase in the value of around 50%.

Another Spike On The Horizon?

Compared to other currencies, Ripple is relatively inexpensive. It is, therefore, from a trading standpoint the least list in terms of that a low investment can quickly provide a nice little profit back. It is, however, also perhaps the most volatile. For example, in March this year, Ripple reached a value of $3.50. Before the end of that month, however, the value dropped to around $0.60. Quite a big loss in the space of just a few weeks.

Since the start of the year though, Ripple has shown an increasing trend to bit spikes, followed by bit drops. With the price recently at a plateau of around 60-70 cents though, in the last 24-hours, this price has seen a spike up to just over a dollar.

ripple xrp

eTeknix Does NOT Give Financial Advice

We are certainly not spreading this because we’re telling you to invest in Ripple. What we are, however, suggesting is that a fresh spike may be on the way again which just, on the whole, underlies the volatility within cryptocurrencies. Remember, last December Bitcoin reached a value of around $20,000. Today, it’s about $6500 (and trending downwards). Based on the previous activity for Ripple though, if it is going to have another spike, it’s due soon! How long it will last or how high it will go (or even stay there) is a mystery!

We say the same we always have with cryptocurrencies, if you have the money spare, there are worse investments. At the same time though, you have to be ready to lose it all literally overnight!

What do you think? Is Ripple on the rise again? – Let us know in the comments!

New Gundam Breaker Releases On PC To A Mixed Response

New Gundam Breaker has been out for the PS4 for quite a while now. The game has, however, been dragging its heels getting to the PC. With the game featuring a fully-customized style of Mech design and battle, it’s clearly a game that is going to have a lot of interesting. Particularly on the PC where such things should run a little bit better, if not prettier.

Well, the good news is that the game has finally been released for the PC. The bad news is, the early reception for it isn’t very good.

People Are Not Particularly Impressed!

Checking out the Steam reviews for New Gundam Breaker, it is currently, just, holding on to a ‘mixed’ rating. Checking out the reviews though, people are clearly not happy with the PC version. Remember as well that this was supposedly delayed to optimize and improve it!

GrubbyMcgee writes: “Well…so far the game has crashed 3 times. Video freezes up, then the audio overloads till finally the whole thing crashes. Had to turn off my speakers cuz it was so loud. The game nearly crashes your computer with it. Already tried uninstalling and reinstalling, even to different hard drives. Had a lot higher hopes for this game cuz I’m a huge Gundam fan, but so far I can’t even play it. Can’t recommend it in its current state. May update later if it decides to finally work.”

Comparisons To Previous Versions

Having read through a number of the reviews, the vast majority of complaints seem to suggest that based on previous releases, this just simply isn’t good. Less content and overall poor gameplay seem to be the order of the day! Admittedly, for anyone new to the series the more positive reviews suggest there is some fun to be had here. If you are, however, an ‘old-hand’ at this game, it’s probably best avoided!

Xtreme Edition on the Way

Although Gigabyte has their custom-cooled Windforce triple-fan RTX 20-series video card line, they are also preparing a new Xtreme variant on the way. This is going to be under their high-end gaming AORUS brand and will feature the beefiest cooling seen on an NVIDIA RTX 20-series video card yet.

It has three 100mm Windforce fans with a heatpipe direct touch heatsink underneath. The VRM MOSFETs and surrounding components also have dedicated heatsinks for optimal cooling as well. Of course, it also has some elaborate RGB LED lighting on the shrould and the three 100mm fans.

Even though it is not the Ti version, the Xtreme RTX 2080 has a beefy 12+2 phase VRM and comes with a 4-year warranty.

What Kind of Connector Options are Available in the RTX 2080 Xtreme?

What makes this a truly Xtreme edition card however, is the fact that there are seven display connectors in the rear. That means a comprehensive combination of options available to users for their multi-monitor setup. The reference model by default only has five display outputs. There are three HDMI ports, three full-size DisplayPorts and one USB-C port.

When is This AORUS Xtreme Video Card Coming Out?

Gigabyte did not reveal any firm launch dates yet, but the product page is already up so it is most likely coming sooner than expected.

McAfee Warns Cryptocurrency Malware Will Get Worse

You may or may not be aware, but every quarter McAfee releases a report stating what they believe is currently (or going to be) the biggest threat in terms of computer and online security. We should at this point clarify that this is the anti-virus company. Not John McAfee, who incidentally has had very little to do with them for quite a while now.

In the latest report published (which you can read in full here) the anti-virus company is warning consumers and businesses that cryptocurrency malware will be one of the biggest threats moving into the new year.

What Form Would This Take?

This is something that we have already seen in limited ways in 2018. You may have noted several reports throughout the year of websites essentially containing malware within the data. This malware uses your system’s resources to generate cryptocurrency income. Most of you probably wouldn’t mind as long as A) You were told and B) It wasn’t too invasive. The problem with this as malware, however, is that you are not made aware of it.

What Can I Do To Protect Myself?

Well, herein lies a bit of a problem. It rather hard to detect, at least for the basic user, when this happens. Various anti-virus programs have already looked at introducing methods that could potentially inform you or block the use of your resources, but they are still very early doors in terms of development.

The simplest thing to say, which is a good general rule of thumb for the internet, is to not visit any dodgy websites. You might not be the only one using your computer!

Assassins Creed Odyssey Launch Trailer Released

Before you start panicking after reading that title, no you haven’t been asleep for a week. Nor indeed has Ubisoft moved up the release date. It is, of course, common when a game is launched to produce a trailer that is entirely about pushing the product. Earlier trailers do also do this but in a different way.

It is, however, slightly unusual to see that despite Assassins Creed Odyssey not actually being out yet, Ubisoft has released the launch trailer. Go figure!

So When Is It Actually Out?

Assassins Creed Odyssey doesn’t actually release until October the 5th. So at the time of writing that is a little under 2 weeks away. It is, therefore, certainly a bit strange that we should get the launch trailer so early. That being said though, I’m certainly not complaining either. It does, after all, give us a little more insight into how the game will be.

What Do We Think?

Personally, I’m probably not the best person to ask. I started off my Assassins Creed days losing the franchise. After the third one though? I’d kinda had enough of it. The story was getting a little too convoluted for my liking. That being said, Odyssey is looking like a fairly decent chapter in the series. Perhaps the best we’ve had for a while.

Forgive me though, if I wait until the reviews start coming in.

Instagram Co-Creators Leave Facebook To ‘Get Creative Again’

Back in 2012, Facebook had a pretty good feel of the technological ‘pulse’ as to what apps were doing quite well. As such, one of their earliest purchases (at least, of a ‘competing’ company) was Instagram. As part of the purchase, the original owners were given relatively comfortable positions at Facebook to continue the development of the popular app.

In a report via CNET though, both of the co-creators have resigned from Facebook citing that they want to ‘get creative again’.

Shots Fired?

The original founders of Instagram Mike Krieger (left) and Kevin Systrom (right) announced they were leaving the company with the latter posting: “We’re planning on taking some time off to explore our curiosity and creativity again. Building new things requires that we step back, understand what inspires us and match that with what the world needs; that’s what we plan to do.”

While this all sounds rather innocent, the question is, are they taking a parting shot at Facebook here?

instagramLack Of Innovating

Despite the way Facebook stormed onto the world stage, you could argue that in recent years the company has gotten a bit lazy. I mean, what was the last update or app they produced that really impressed you? Can you even name the most recent one?

As such, their comments (and actions) could easily be construed as a message. Put simply, Facebook isn’t interested in being innovative anymore. In fairness, it’d be hard to disagree with that!

Doom Royale with Cheese

Even though it is now over 24 years old, Id Software’s classic shooter Doom II has a new Battle Royale mode.

Battle Royale is of course, the hottest thing to happen to PC gaming in recent years. With every company on the planet clamouring to add incorporate it into their titles. After all, it worked very well for Epic GamesFortnite, eventually becoming the world’s most popular video game because of it.

Doom II Gets 64-Player Battle Royale Mode with New Mod

The new battle royale mode for Doom II is of course, through a user mod. Specifically made by Retrodex Gaming and supports up to 64 players. This even includes bots just in case you cannot find anyone to play with. There will be always up to 8 bots to play with, so the servers are never empty.

All the areas in the maps are open and accessible from the start. That means no need to search for keys. This is also helpful since that means there is more room to hide in and setup ambushes.

How Can I Play This Doom II Mod?

The game requires Zandronum 3.0 to play and of course, a copy of Doom II. After which, head on to the project’s official ModDB page for updates, and wait for it to be available.

MSI RTX 2080 Gaming X Trio Graphics Card Review

MSI RTX 2080

The new RTX graphics cards are here at last, and we follow up today with our second RTX 2080 series card! The rather stunning looking Gaming X Trio from MSI. With the 10-series cards, the Gaming X Trio was one of the fastest on the market. Obviously, both I and MSI are hoping to see that trend continue with the RTX 2080 I’ll be testing today.

Equipped with one of the flagship triple fan coolers, with Zero Frozr fan stop technology, as well as MSI TORX Fans 3.0. There’s a new and improved radiator under the fans too, as well as more concentrated copper heatpipes, a larger copper-nickel base plate, and a “premium thermal compound” to keep everything running smoothly. With that in mind, if that card doesn’t run cool, quiet and fast, I’ll be raising an eyebrow with the MSI hardware design team.

Of course, keep in mind that this card is being tested under our usual methods. RayTracing isn’t available just yet, and DLSS is still being rolled out too. Even if they were here, since they’re RTX only features, there’s no basis for comparison in regards to consumer benchmarks at this time. We will retest in the coming weeks as these opportunities open themselves up to us though.

RTX On!

20-Series Features

  • Geforce Experience
  • Nvidia Shadow Play
  • Nvidia Ansel
  • DirectX 12
  • Nvidia G-SYNC
  • HDR
  • Ray Tracing
  • Nvidia DLSS

Specifications

Core/Memory

  • Boost Clock / Base Clock /Memory Frequency
  • 1860 MHz / 1515 MHz / 7000 MHz
  • 8GB GDDR6

TORX FAN 3.0: Supremely silent

  • Dispersion fan blade: Steeper curved blade accelerating the airflow.
  • Traditional fan blade: Provides steady airflow to massive heatsink below.
  • Double ball bearing: Strong and lasting core for years of smooth gaming.

Dragon Center

  • 1 click to optimize all you need for smooth gaming.

For in-depth specifications, please visit the official MSI product page here.

What MSI Had to Say

“The GeForce RTX 20 Series GAMING TRIO is the return of MSI’s beastly three-fan graphics card. Only reserved for the most powerful of GPU’s, the TRIO Series features a mix of black and gunmetal grey with elegant shapes and a classy brushed metal backplate that matches the front. This looks great with the gorgeous RGB effects found on the front and the side of the card, which can be controlled using MSI’s Mystic Light software and made to synchronize with other RGB components.” – MSI

What’s in the Box

Everything you need is packaged very neatly in this well-padded box. Including a GPU bracket and PSU adaptor cable.

The bracket looks stunning and is perfect for adding a bit of flair, as well as preventing the card from warping or drooping; or indeed both.

Also, the card comes well protected. However, some helpful stickers let you know that the NVLink is hidden behind a panel and that you shouldn’t freak out if the fans aren’t spinning; it’s not a bug, it’s a feature.

World War 3 Enters Early Access This October

Despite it still (somewhat) being under the radar many people are getting rather excited over World War 3. The game, in a nutshell, is a large open-world first-person shooter. Remember this as it’s a factor I’ll come back to later.

If you have been keeping tabs on this game, then we have some good news for you. In a report via RockPaperShotgun, the game will be releasing in early access this October!

Getting Back To An Earlier Point

I’ve made it pretty clear in a previous post that I’m most definitely not planning on getting Battlefield 5. If you want to know my reasons, you can check them out in detail here. The main crux of the matter though is that Battlefield, as a series, has lost its way. World War 3 would seem to be an FPS game that looks more favorably towards the fans of the classic BF games.

When Is It Out?

World War 3 will release on early access for the PC on October 19th. If are you, a little like me, and a bit disappointed with what you’ve seen from BF5 so far, I strongly advise that you check this out. Yes, it might be early access and we all have our opinions about that. In terms of the better gaming experience though, I’d sooner put my money on World War 3.

New Design and Revision

It appears that ASUS is preparing to launch three updates to their existing Prime and TUF Z370 motherboards. Specifically, the Prime Z370-A, Prime Z370-P and TUF Z370 PLUS Gaming, which are all getting an alternate “II” revision.

Three Revised Z370 Motherboards Show Up on ASUS' Website

The new Prime Z370-A II, Prime Z370-P II and TUF Z370 PLUS Gaming II will not only have some minor feature differences, they also look aesthetically different from their original versions.

What is New With the PRIME Z370-A II?

Three Revised Z370 Motherboards Show Up on ASUS' Website

All the ports on-board and in the rear IO are identical. However, it appears that this new revision actually has less features than the original Prime Z370 motherboard. The 3D mount screw ports are gone, and the EZ XMP switch feature is gone as well.

Aesthetically, the heatsinks and IO covers are also simpler looking. ASUS also separated the M.2 heat shield from the single-piece chipset heatsink design of the original. Otherwise, the layout remains the same.

What is New With the PRIME Z370-P II?

Three Revised Z370 Motherboards Show Up on ASUS' Website

The Prime Z370-P II improves upon several features from the original. For instance, the top VRM components now have a heatsink. That is because the VRM has been improved from a 6-phase design to a 9-phase design.

Aesthetically, the PCB printing is different as well, utilizing a sunburst pattern. The new chipset heatsink actually picksup this pattern as well as the VRM heatsink as well, so the design has a unified look.

All the ports and connectors remain identical to the original. However, some ASUS exclusive features are different. ASUS Optimem (for improved DDR4 stability) is newly added, although the second version loses the ASUS C.P.R.(CPU Parameter Recall) function.

What is New With the TUF Z370-PLUS Gaming II?

Three Revised Z370 Motherboards Show Up on ASUS' Website

The new TUF Z370-PLUS Gaming II adds several features to the original. Namely two Aura Sync RGB headers, and adds 22110 M.2 form factor support. The PCB printing and IO covers are also different, with the chipset heatsink smaller in size, while adding heatsinks to the CPU VRM.

All other features remain the same, while ASUS also adds the Optimem feature for improved DDR4 stability.

Activision Issue C&D Order On Fan Made Spyro Game

While some of us are waiting for our favourite game to get a sequel, others simply can’t stand it any more! As such, they decide to take matters into their own hands by creating their own ‘fan made’ version of the game. This can sometimes be a remake, it can sometimes be something completely new. What is consistent, however, is that you’re always running the risk of the lawyers!

One such project was Spyro Myths Awaken, a fan made project which looked to create an entirely new Spyro game. There is, however, some bad news. After around a year of development, in a report via Eurogamer, the creator has been issued with a cease and desist order from Activision.

Why Did It Take So Long?

Well, that is a good question. A more accurate one would perhaps be why are they only just going this now? Well, with the Spyro remasters set to release in a few months, Activision might be exercising it’s IP muscles a little. There is, however, a way out of this for the creator. How hard it will be will depend on the current state of development.

A Simple Asset Swap

The easiest workaround for the creator would be to simply do an asset swap where required. This would essentially remove all traces of Spyro which he could replace with his own creations. It may not be ideal, depending on how Spyro heavy the game is. It might, however, just be about the best solution to a difficult problem.

This does, incidentally, appear to be what is currently being considered.

Respecting the Source Material

BumbleBee is set to reignite the fire for the stale Transformers movie franchise when it launches in December. Even though it is set to face some heavy hitters like James Cameron’s Alita and James Wan’s Aquaman. Many fans were glad to see the latest Transformers movie stick closer to its 80’s character renderings. Plus, seemingly having more heart than the product-placement and explosion-laden Michael Bay blockbusters we have come to expect from the series.

Several Classic Transformers are in the Latest Bumblebee Trailer

Now Paramount Pictures has released the latest trailer and fans will be glad to see that some familiar faces are back. Not just in terms of name but in how close they actually look to their 80’s cartoon original designs. Of course, they all receive the modern re-imagining but are not thoroughly revised like the first 2007 feature film.

Watch the trailer for yourself below:

It appears that part of the story takes place in Cybertron. So we also get to see some of the classic Decepticons as we remember them from the 80’s. Instead of the over-designed version from the previous Transformers films.

Several Classic Transformers are in the Latest Bumblebee Trailer

When is BumbleBee Coming Out in Theatres?

The movie takes place in 1987. Years before the first Transformers film. It has a young BumbleBee alone and afraid posing as a beat-up Volkswagen. His sentient existence is then discovered by a girl named Charlie Watson (played by Hailee Steinfeld) and the adventure starts from there.

The BumbleBee movie is premiering in theaters on December 21, 2018. Just in time for the holiday season.

Stranger Things Moving Forward

The announced “majority studio closure” of Telltale Games recently has many fans wondering about the future of certain projects in the works. The Wolf Among Us 2 as well as final episodes of The Walking Dead: The Final Season are definitely cancelled. Only the

However, Netflix confirms that they are moving forward with the adaptation of Stranger Things. Telltale Games originally set to create the game, as announced three months ago. This is actually a separate deal that Netflix and Telltale have worked out, following the Netflix adaptation of Telltale Games’ Minecraft: Story Mode. The latter, according to Netflix is also moving forward as well.

The announcement from Telltale mentions that a crew of 25 will remain to finish one more project. So that likely means that the remaining team members will be completing work on Netflix’s Minecraft: Story Mode.

Who is Going to Be Developing the Stranger Things Game?

Netflix did not make any announcements yet on who will pickup the project. Stranger Things remains a highly popular property, so the company is not going to have a hard time finding a replacement. Whether they can fulfill what the company envisions for the adaptation is another thing entirely.

For now, fans would just have to wait and see. Coincidentally, a random user on Reddit have posted supposed concept art and some footage for the now cancelled Telltale game. This would have to be enough to tide fans over until more news comes up.

Al Matthews Best Known For Aliens’ Sgt Apone Has Died

Aliens is perhaps one of the greatest films ever made. If not, then it’s certainly the best ever science-fiction film. Building on from the original, Aliens got everything right by keeping things simple, more characters, more aliens, more guns and more explosions. The film has a number of iconic moments whether its Bishop crawling through the pipe, the scene with the turrets guarding the hallway or Bill Paxton’s ‘game over man! game over!

One of the most popular characters though had to be Sergeant Apone. The leader of the Colonial Marine detachment and overall badass of the corps.

Real Life Experience

Al Matthews, who played Sgt. Apone, was a genuine war veteran having served in Vietnam as a marine and being awarded two Purple Hearts. In 1986 though, he was given his first major role as the sergeant from Aliens. A role that was, ironically, perhaps the best known of his entire career.

“It’s another glorious day in the Corps. A day in the Marine Corps is like a day on the farm: Every meal’s a banquet. Every paycheck’s a fortune! Every formation’s a parade! I love the Corps!” – Sgt Apone

Now, tell me that you didn’t read that in the exact way Al Matthews did in the film! It was a role that he always embraced and in later years would even revive it for the (albeit terrible) Aliens Colonial Marines Game.

Passing

Al Matthews spent the latter part of his life living between Spain and the UK. He was discovered yesterday at his home in Spain by a neighbour where he reportedly died in his bed. Although the exact cause of death is pending a coroners inquiry, it is believed that he died of natural causes in his sleep. Albeit, at a very young age (at least these days) of just 75.

While his passing is sad, he leaves behind a strong acting legacy and, if nothing else, the fantastic part he played in the making of one science fictions greatest badasses!

AMD May Be Preparing a 590 Graphics Card

If you’d have asked most people in the PC tech industry, they’d have said that you shouldn’t expect a new graphics card from AMD until at least the middle of 2019. Yes, Nvidia with the launch of their 20XX range seemed to have got the timing really well. There is, however, one little problem that Nvidia has. Their 20XX range of graphics cards is extortionately expensive!

Given that the 2080 is only ever so slightly better than the 1080TI, but costs nearly twice as much, consumers are being a little hesitant to make the upgrade. Oh sure, the people who need the latest tech will make the upgrade, but for those of of who are simply looking for improvement, it’s hard to make the case. Well, for the 2080 at least.

In a report via PCGamesN though, it seems that AMD might be set to surprise us by releasing a new graphics card very shortly!

The 5XX Range

The 5XX range of AMD GPUs represents (aside from the Vega’s) the most recent line of graphics cards from team red. While they are, on the whole, decent cards, they lacked the performance to effectively keep up with the 10XX series. To put this into context, the AMD 580 only just hold par with Nvidia’s 1060.

The X90 range was first hinted at during the 4XX series run. At the time it was believed that a 490 was in development and that in terms of power, the difference would be about the same as seen between the 470 and 480. Not huge, but substantial enough to make you think.XFX Announces Five Radeon RX 580 Graphics Card Models

The 590 Could Be A Smart Move

AMD seems to be making a lot of smart moves at the moment. We’ve already seen them delay the release of the Ryzen 2800X to put it in direct competition with Intel’s new processors. Given that supply issues are ramping up the price and effectively delaying Intel, this could pay off hugely for AMD.

On similar ground, if the AMD 590 can perform on a level around the Nvidia 1080 (maybe even the TI) but only cost around £300, then people will be switching to team red in their droves! I know I certainly would!

This is, of course, all speculation as AMD has not yet formally announced anything and even the source is only made via some digging in the updated Linux code. The AMD 590 could, however, be a surprising and much welcomed late visitor to the party!

China Drops Ban Hammer On 4,000 Websites

It is no secret that China has one of the strongest regulated internet services in the world. While we in the West enjoy a relatively free and open internet experience (in terms of news at least) any website, app or online service in China is subjected to rigorous standards via a somewhat vague ‘moral code’.

It is exactly for these reasons that China has a temporary hold on any video game certifications and why the popular streaming app Twitch has also been banned.

In a report via the BBC though, a fresh wave of website bans in the country appears to have excluded as many as 4,000 from being accessible.

Why Have They Been Banned?

Well, you remember earlier how I said their decisions were sometimes rather vague? Well, this is no different. In the report, the only excuse given for the websites being banned is that that hold ‘improper values’.  The term in full is “improper values, vulgarity or obscenity” and it seems that websites offering free eBooks seems to be the most affected by this.

Massive User Base

There is, of course, some irony that despite China having one of the largest internet populations, it also has possibly the most restricted access on the planet. With over 800 million users, its something Western companies have clearly wanted a slice of. They do, however, often find little to no success. Google is getting much further than most with their censored search engine proposal. That isn’t, however, without a lot of criticism internally from staff members.

This does, however, mark another sad instance of the internet censorship in the country. Just how long this will continue though is any ones guess!

What do you think? Is China right to regulate their internet? Is it simply a method of controlling the people? – Let us know in the comments!

Magic Leap Are Already After Military Funding

After years of development, Magic Leap surprised everyone by finally launching the creator’s edition of their augmented reality headset last August. Although I don’t wish to sound mean about it, the headset had been in development for so long with so little information released that many were starting to question if it would ever release at all!

Well, it has, and it’s here (kind of).

Following the release of an amazing tech demo of Angry Birds last week though, things are Magic Leap One appears to have taken a less pleasant turn. In a report via Games Industry, the company is part of a contract war seeking to get funding for the use of the technology for military purposes.

Some Strong Competition

In fairness, I’m not going to solely demonist Magic Leap. Why? Well, the report also names Microsoft as an interested party for the AR contract. In addition, we already know that Google is already working with several military arms of the US government. As such, news like this isn’t (sadly) unusual. It is, however, a little sad to see Magic Leap going into for these sorts of deals so quickly after releasing their product to the public.

magic leap

There Is A Logic…

Military contracts can be huge money spinners. By huge, we mean colossal. While I daresay that many of the team at Magic Leap won’t like this news, getting a military contract can ensure a companies sustainability for many years to come. We might not like it, but it is simply the direction the tech industry goes in at times!

Telltale Games Gives Hope That The Walking Dead Will Finish

Tomorrow, we will see the release of the second episode of the final season of Telltale Games, The Walking Dead. It is, however, a series that is in the middle of a crisis. Following the unexpected shutdown of Telltale Games last Friday the entire status of the final series has been thrown into doubt. It has led to a lot of speculation whether they will finish it or if the 2nd episode will now be its finale.

What hasn’t helped it that TT Games has been notably silent on the matter. While they did confirm they would complete a Minecraft Netflix series, they have said nothing about The Walking Dead.

Well, finally, we have some news. Following the release of a Twitter post, TT Games has confirmed that there may indeed be hope for the remaining episodes!

Good News (Sort Of)

In a Twitter post, TT Games has confirmed that ‘multiple potential partners’ had stepped in and offered to try and help the company complete the final series. It would, after all, ve very saddening to see it literally cancelled after only the 2nd of 5 planned episodes were released. It doesn’t change the fact that The Wolf Among Us 2 has been cancelled, but still!

the walking dead

Who Are These Partners?

It’s hard to say at this point. The slightly depressing news is that it isn’t uncommon for companies to get offers like this when they’re going out of business. Sadly, all too often the offers made are either not good enough or ask the company to part with its biggest assets for next to nothing.

So, at this point, there are 3 things that we (more or less) know. Episode 2 will release as planned. There is a chance that we might get episodes 3 and 4 in some kind of condition. Episode 5 is still looking unlikely!

What a sad state of affairs! At least the news is a little more optimistic though!the walking dead

AMD Benefitting From Intel Shortage

Over the past month or so, Intel has been struggling with a looming CPU shortage. Due to the demands placed on their 14nm process, supply has not been keeping up. As expected, these shortages have pushed the prices for the chips way up due to supply and demand. After high prices for a month or so, we are starting to see signs of the ripple effects in the market. For one, AMD chip sales are increasing while OEMs are growing unhappy about the shortages.

The first part of the story makes a lot of sense as the Intel CPUs go up in price. AMD is currently the most competitive they have been in a decade in terms of performance. With such a small performance margin, AMD CPUs at stable prices are more competitive for uninitiated buyers. Fence sitters are also more likely to choose AMD for cost benefit. Furthermore, even those who might want to buy Intel might hold out for lower prices, pushing sales down.

OEMs Unhappy With Intel Supply Woes

OEMs are also unhappy about the shortage and higher prices. While they are less likely to be affected by costs due to long-term supply agreements, supply shortages will hit their lineups as well. The shortages and changing roadmaps also mean that product planning is out the window. To combat this, some OEMs, like HP, are pushing out more AMD builds. HP expects to ship 1/3 of their PC units as AMD ones. Analysts expect the shortage to last until Q2 2019.

Due to these problems facing  Intel, AMD has been reaping a lot of benefits. Sales are expected to accelerate as the shortage continues to grow. Some analysts are even predicting 30% market share for AMD by the end of the year. The only unknown is how well Intel has been able to protect the enterprise market from the shortage. If AMD can get in now, they will be able to build a lot of momentum going forward. Based on this information, other analysts are predicting even higher prices for AMD stock.

Game-Changing Audio Technology from Creative

Creative is finally launching the first two products manifesting their “game-changing” Super X-Fi headphone holography technology: The SXFI AMP and SXFI AIR Bluetooth Headphones.

“Super X-Fi is not just any 3D or surround sound technology; we had that 20 years ago. It’s much, much more. Think of the magic of holography, but for audio, and for headphones. And now the real deal is finally here,” said Sim Wong Hoo, CEO of Creative.

Creative Launches the SXFI AMP and SXFI AIR BT Headphones

The SXFI AMP itself is quite compact and is just a simple dongle no larger than a finger. It is designed with Android users in mind and connects in-line to a headphone to improve sound. It connects to your devices via USB Type-C. Furthermore, you can also add-on appropriate converters to connect other port types. With a USB connection to your PC or Mac, the SXFI AMP can support an advanced feature that lets users enjoy 5.1 and 7.1 cinematic audio content from movies and games, with the magic of a holographic Super X-Fi sound stage.

The SXFI AMP’s powerful amplifier can drive any headphone. Including studio grade headphones with up to 600 ohm impedance. Moreover, it uses a separate 128dB high-end high-precision AKM 32-bit DAC. This provides maximum audio fidelity and pristine quality yielding up to 120dB SNR, and 0.0003% THD – easily beating some of the most expensive headphone amps on the market today.

Game in Style

Cooler Master is launching their new MP860 gaming mousepad. Unlike typical input device surfaces however, the MP860 offers RGB LED illumination around it. It connects via a standard USB port and has the LED controller box integrated into the unit in a non-obstructive way. Other RGB LED mousepads offer bulky controllers near where the cable is. This usually prevents proper mouse positioning. Which is why its great that Cooler Master opted to have the MP860’s design be completely flat.

Furthermore, Cooler Master offers two side options for the MP860. One surface is made of cloth, providing smooth speed transitions. Meanwhile, the other side presents anodized aluminium for more precise control. The total mousepad dimensions measure 360 x  260 x 6 to 10mm.

Cooler Master Releases the MP860 RGB Gaming Mousepad

As for the RGB LED, there are 19 pieces of LED lighting adorning the borders of the device. This ensures full coverage and no gaps across the surface. Users will be able to customize it through an included software, and even synchronize it with other RGB LED peripherals. Default behavioural presets include: static, breathing, color cycle, wave, stars, and marquee.

How Much is the MP860 Mousemad?

The device is actually the first in Cooler Master’s new M800 series. Which will eventually be followed by the MK850 keyboard and MM830 mouse soon. The MP860 will be available in the UK starting next month for £79.99.

Intel CPU Prices Jump Significantly as 14nm Shortages Persist

Massive Price Hike on Intel CPUs

If you are planning on building an Intel-based system lately, chances are you would have noticed the significant price jump. A quick glance at PCPartpicker UK shows a clear ramping up of prices starting at the beginning of August. Take the flagship Intel Coffee Lake Core i7-8700K for example. At the beginning of the year, we can see that at its peak, the pricing hit around ~£350 in the UK, with the lowest price at £292 and most are around £325-330.

Now a few months later, the latest data for September shows the majority of prices have skyrocketed well past the £400 park. In fact, the lowest price is £320.35, but the second lowest price is £384.40. The highest price being £449.99. These are from familiar UK stores as well. During that period, the price of the same Intel Core i7-8700K CPU via OverclockersUK jumped from £319.99 to £439.99!

What About Other Markets Outside the UK?

This is not an isolated incident as even Dutch website Hardware.info reports noticeable price hikes. Even just comparing from the beginning of the month until now. They note that the i7-8700 jumped 33% from September 1st and is now priced at €425 from just €319. The i7-8700K up 20% from €349 to €420.

Meanwhile, US prices for the most part are relatively stable in comparison to the EU and UK prices.

However, building a PC is bound to get even more expensive for those in the US as the Trump Administration pushes for $200B worth of tariffs for Chinese imports. This will involve 10% on top for several parts used in builds such as video cards, cooling fans, etc starting September. This is set to increase up to 25% by January 2019.

USD Intel Core 8700K prices via PCPartpicker

US Intel Core 8700K prices (in USD) via PCPartpicker

What is Causing This Price Hike?

The most likely culprit is the 14nm supply production issues. With Intel delaying the 10nm production, their chipsets and processors are all using 14nm and their output capacity is overwhelmed. This is not the same Intel which for years had a manufacturing advantage over their competition after all. They have even reportedly considering 22nm to meet the chipset orders. According to Hardware Info, they have done this with their entry level H310 chipsets.

HyperX Expands SSD Lineup with Savage EXO and Fury RGB

New Internal and External SSDs

Kingston Technology‘s gaming brand HyperX is further expanding their storage products with new Savage EXO and Fury RGB SSDs. The Savage EXO is a new external SSD drive while the Fury RGB is an RGB LED-clad version of their Fury SATA SSD product.  The two SSDs both utilize 3D NAND technology for better power efficiency and durability. It delivers high read and write speeds, equivalent to 10x the speed of a typical 7200RPM hard drive.

How Well Do These HyperX Drives Perform?

HyperX Expands SSD Lineup with Savage EXO and Fury RGB

The Fury RGB SATA SSD can reach sequential read speeds of up to 550MB/s. Meanwhile, it reaches up to 480MB/s in sequential write speeds. Users will be able to have the choice between 240B, 480GB and 960GB capacities. It has a Marvell 88SS1074 controller and utilizes 3D TLC NAND.

HyperX Expands SSD Lineup with Savage EXO and Fury RGB

In terms of RGB capability, the HyperX Fury RGB is coompatible with motherboard RGB LED headers. Furthermore, it can also be daisy chained to synchronize RGB effects across multiple devices. HyperX will also be offering a separate upgraded RGB  bundle kit. This includes a USB 3.0 enclosure, a 3.5” bracket and mounting screws, RGB cable, SATA data cable, USB 3.1 Type A to mini-USB Cable and Hard Drive Cloning Software.

HyperX Expands SSD Lineup with Savage EXO and Fury RGB

The Savage EXO on the other hand is much more compact, measuring only 123.82 x 48.61 x 10.24mm. However, it is still plenty fast with 500MB/s read and 400MB/s write speeds. It uses a USB 3.1 Gen2 connector to do this, but it is also backwards compatible with other USB ports. Obviously, that would affect the maximum transfer rate possible. The Savage EXO is available in 480GB and 960GB capacities.

How Much are These New HyperX SSDs?

RPCS3 Release Trailer Showing Big Improvements In Many Games

Anyone who has read my articles on the RPCS3 emulator will know that while I am very supportive of their work, I’m not so enthused about some of the hyperbole that gets written about it. While the team behind it has done some great work, in terms of a finished product, the PS3 emulator is still a long way off achieving its goal.

Following the release of a brand new video though, the team is keen to emphasise that work is coming along well. With it, they announce that major improvements have been seen in a number of games.

What Games Have Been Improved?

The video below shows games such as; The Last Of Us, Uncharted 3, Resistance 1, Bleach and some games from the Yakuza franchise running significantly better. One of the main hurdles they appear to have crossed is the ability to get cut-scenes running without any crashed. As can also be seen though, the actual gameplay is still a bit choppy.

Where Can I Check This Out?

You can download the RCPS3 emulator from the link here! Please note though that while you can download the emulator, the games themselves are subject to copyright laws. As such, any matters involving you obtaining those is entirely at your discretion (and risk!).

It should be noted again that the chances are if you go into this with high expectations, you will be disappointed. RPCS3 is a long way from the finished product. If you do, however, want to get on board and even support the team in their work, you can clearly see that they are always working hard to try and improve it.

Total War Rome 2 Subjected To Review Bombing On Steam

Up until recently, Total War Rome 2 was largely accepted as being of the best releases in the Total War series to date. With its emphasis on massive scale combat and realism, it found itself a strong loyal fanbase. It is, however, the latter issue that has currently come under a little scrutiny. So much scrutiny, in fact, that the game has received overwhelmingly negative reviews on Steam over the last 30 days.

A pretty huge turn around considering that until this, the game had roughly a 73% positive rating.

Why Are People Unhappy?

In a report via PCGamesN, the issue has largely spawned from the recent ‘Ancestral update’ and it’s a complaint that has also dogged Battlefield V. Namely, the inclusion of female soldiers or in this specific case, Generals.

Since the patch, a number of players have reported that many of their Generals within saved games have summarily been turned into women. In addition, the likelihood of a female General spawning is much higher now. Overlooking the sheer annoyance of something fiddling with your save file though, for a game that prides itself on historical accuracy, this has clearly not gone down well with it’s staunchest fans.

Steam Forums Locked

The changes, which in fairness are a matter of debate, have clearly resulted in a lot of heated forum posts. Largely from people complaining, as above, that the change was unnecessary and waters down the accuracy. This has led to the Steam Moderators locking out several posts as the conversation got more and more, shall we say, enthusiastic!

Personally, I like to think I can understand this point from all perspectives. If you haven’t played Total War Rome 2 yet though, don’t let this put you off!

Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch Looks To Fix The Bugs Bethesda Left

Following the release of the VR version of Fallout 4, Bethesda has largely drawn a line under the game now. There is, after all, a brand new one just a little over a month away to work on! It seems, however, that the fan community is still working hard to try and get the game into a ‘polished’ state.

As such, an unofficial patch released by ‘Arthmoor’ looks to address all of the final bugs left behind by Bethesda. In addition, it also looks to improve the gameplay where it can!

What Has Been Fixed?

The patch notes read as follows (bear with us, it’s a bit of a long list!)

  • Removed the Guard Gutsy voice fix after it was determined that the robots are invisible for anyone who begins a new game and visits General Atomics Galleria with the fix in place. (Bug #24628)
  • Precomb data was accidentally disabled on a cell at The Castle. (Bug #25055)
  • The edit locks added by previous UFO4P versions to certain functions on WorkshopParentScript have been re-evaluated, and the locks on the following functions have been removed (Bug #24643)
  • HandleActorDeath (regression of UFO4P 2.0 Bug #21899)
  • ModifyResourceData, SetResourceData (regression of UFO4P 2.0 Bug #21896)
  • RecalculateResourceDamage, RecalculateResourceDamageForResource (regression of UFO4P 1.0.5 Bug #21899)
  • WoundActor (regression of UFO4P 2.0 Bug #21898)
  • Actor Fixes
  • The Protectron in Virgil’s Lab had an invalid set of script properties set on it. (Bug #24910)
  • Dead guards inside Parsons State Insane Asylum were being labeled as Gunners due to an incorrect template setting. (Bug #24944)
  • LvlBloodbugAmbush, LvlBloodbugInt and LvlBloodbugIntAmbush were missing a property on BloodbugScript (Bug #25148).

More Fixes!

  • Item Fixes
  • Gunner Flannel Shirt and Jeans (Armor_GunnerRustic_Underarmor) was not included on the formlist for scrapping into cloth like other clothing items. (Bug #24744)
  • Bourbon was using the wrong version of the put down sound for bottles. (Bug #24739)
  • Antibiotics and Curie’s Health Pack were not properly flagged as ObjectTypeStimpak. (Bug #24738)
  • MS10_RadioTowerNote: Property not set on the book record. Resulting in an error when trying to add a map marker. Nearest logical location based on the note’s content is the Coast Guard Pier across the river from it. So the script will now set this marker when the book is read. (Bug #24619) [NR]
  • Overdue book tokens should be using the drop sound. That matches the pickup sound originally assigned in another bugfix. (Bug #23123)
  • Mr Handy Buzz Blades were yielding no scrap. When they should return 1 aluminum. (Bug #24908)
  • The control item used for the track system in the Mechanist’s Lair was not properly setting up the Arc tank bot due to incorrectly set script properties. (Bug #24678)
  • The leveled list for T-45 Power Armor B (LL_Armor_Power_T45_Set_B) had 2 chest pieces and was missing the left arm. (Bug #24985)
  • Laundered Denim Dress (ClothesPreWarDressBlue) and Laundered Rose Dress (ClothesPreWarDressPink) did not return any cloth when scrapped. They should return 1 piece like other similar outfits. (Bug #24969)

Location and Mesh Fixes

  • Echo Lake Lumber Mill was not set with the Far Harbor world location as its parent. This could lead to incorrectly assigned radiant quests that should go to the Commonwealth instead. It may also have played a part in settlers leaving for Dalton Farm at random times. (Bug #24586)
  • Dunwich Borers was not correctly flagged as part of its own location. At the same time, Hugo’s Hole nearby was mistakenly flagged as being part of the Dunwich Borers location. (Bug #24668)
  • A bad navmesh section over a hole in the bridge at Mass Pike Interchange has been corrected. (Bug #24001)
  • Med-Tek Research could not be properly cleared. Because the Glowing One on the second level was not marked as the location’s boss. (Bug #24928)
  • The left Voltaic Frame shoulder was not displaying correctly on a Robobrain. (meshes\actors\dlc01\robot\parts\robobrain\RoboBrainConstructionLeftArmArmor_10.nif) (Bug #24742)

What Do We Think?

It’s great to see that the fan community is still strong in Fallout 4. I must admit, I completed the game quite a while ago and have since felt very little compunction to return to it. I daresay I have about 700 missed calls telling me a Settlement is in need of assistance. In addition, I have also likely completely forgotten what I was doing!

For those who still play and enjoy the game though, the patch can be downloaded in the link here! – Please note that you will require to have the game (plus all 6 DLC packs) installed for it to work properly!

What do you think? Are you still playing Fallout 4? In addition, are you looking forward to Fallout 76? – Let us know in the comments!

Bee Simulator Will Release In Spring 2019

Back at GamesCom in August, we were treated to a whole bunch of new upcoming games. One of the weirder examples of this would be Bee Simulator. That is, however, weird for all the right reasons. The game presented itself as an exceptionally high-quality game where you would take the role of a bee and do various bee-related jobs.

The trailer was exceptionally polished. Especially for what you might have dismissed as a bit of amusing ‘shovelware’. As crazy as it sounds, we are a little hyped for this game!

As such, in a report via DSOGaming, it’s great news to hear that a loose release date has been set for the game! Sadly though, it has been pushed back from it’s original 2018 planned release.

When Is It Out?

Bee Simulator is scheduled to release in Spring 2019. A rather apt time for a game based on a bee to launch really.

Lukasz Rosinski, VARSAV Game Studios Creative Director, has said: “Many positive reactions lead us to believe that we were correct in choosing a honey bee to be the main protagonist in our first game. Bees and their huge role in our ecosystem, habits prevailing in the beehive and the problems harassing them were a very strong base for the creation of Bee Simulator. At the same time, we were forced to live up to the expectations of a larger than expected group of users – mainstream gamers.

He added: “We received lots of comments detailing the functions they would like to see in our game. To meet those expectations, we decided to change our schedule and push back Bee Simulator’s launch by a few months. We would like to thank you for each idea that we’ve received and we’d like to recommend that you watch our social media platforms, where we’ll present the result of our collaboration with the players.”

Good News And Bad News

In fairness, when the 2018 release date was suggested for the game, I was a little cynical. While the game looked exceptionally polished in the trailer, getting it out the doors in less than 5 months seemed optimised. In addition, Christmas is hardly the season for collecting pollen.

Pushing this back to Spring 2019 makes sense on a whole variety of levels. I will bee (ha!) keeping a close eye on this one!

‘Poop’ Is The Best Indicator That You’re Not A Robot!

In 1950, Alan Turing invented what he considered an indicator to see whether you were talking with a robot/artificial intelligence or a human being. The theory, henceforth known as the ‘Turing Test’ has been pretty much used commonly during the dawn of the internet. How you might ask? Well, ironically, in a reverse sense. You know all those ‘captcha’ tests you take? Well, that’s essentially the same theory but in reverse. In other words, you’re proving that you’re human.

In a report via CNET though, one of the most unique indicators that you’re human might be ‘poop’. No, we’re not talking about the bodily function either!

MIT Research

MIT researchers asked 1000 people to pick 400 words that they would least associate a robot with being able to fully understand. As you can imagine, this brought up a number of conceptual words and emotions such as ‘love’, ‘hate’ etc.

Following this, the 10 most common were taken. These were, as I’m sure you’re curious;

  • Love
  • Please
  • Mercy
  • Human
  • Compassion
  • Empathy
  • Robot
  • Banana
  • Alive
  • Poop

Yes, poop made the list. From here though, the research took an interesting new twist!

A New Study Group

With these 10 words in place, the study then presented them to 2,000 new subjects. From there, they were asked to simply state whether the person believed that the word had been generated by a human or a computer. With ‘poop’ coming up trumps for human the research has come up with a pretty stark conclusion.

If you want to convince someone that you’re human, say the word ‘poop’.

Now, just to be clear, no robots or AI were involved in this test. So the ‘poop’ indicator is more of a human psychological test. Still, perhaps if someone accuses you of being robotic, you should consider dropping ‘poop’ more into your conversations.

Japan Release Images From Asteroid Landers

After spending a couple days nervously tracking an asteroid, the Japanese Space Agency launched two rovers on Friday. The success of the landing was, however, very unclear. Put simply, they had to wait to see if any data starting coming back to earth. Well, following signals received back on Sunday, the agency is delighted to report that both probes have successfully landed and are sending pictures back to Earth as they begin their scientific mission.

Difficulties!

As you can imagine, landing a craft on an asteroid isn’t easy. For starters, it’s a moving target, one that just happens to be moving at a remarkably fast speed. In addition, the surface is very unpredictable with nice smooth areas and deep craters. It is, therefore, something quite remarkable that they have been able to successfully land both rovers on the surface.

Not There Just To Take Pictures!

It should be noted that while the images are incredibly impressive, they’re not there just to take snapshots. Each Rover will be taking samples of the surface of the asteroid which they plan to return to Earth. In the meantime though, each vehicle will be travelling on the surface. They have been specifically designed to ‘hop’ across the surface rather than move like a vehicle which should allow for far greater exploration.

In terms of the samples returning though, the first of the rovers is not set to leave the asteroid until December 2019. Even then, it will take at least a year before it managed to get back to Earth. The data collected will be of massive interest to scientists. Particularly so we can learn and understand what elements make them up. Maybe we’ll even discover some new ones!

CAPCOM Confirms Devil May Cry 5 With New Trailer

Devil May Cry 5 Will Include Microtransactions!

Devil May Cry is a franchise that is badly in need of a good strong release. The recent version of the game (including the HD issues) has largely been pretty under-whelming if not outright bad. It wouldn’t be hard to make an argument that since Devil May Cry 3 was released in 2005, the franchise has seen very little to get excited about since.

There was, however, some hope on the horizon with Devil May Cry 5. Based on the screenshots and video footage, it appeared that Capcom might have, finally, gotten this franchise back on track. In a report via DSOGaming though, things have undoubtedly taken a twist that many fans will be shocked and disappointed with.

Somehow, Capcom has found a way to bring Microtransactions into the game!

Red Orbs!

It appears, that the microtransactions will be largely based around ‘red orbs’. A factor in the game for upgrading your character/abilities.

Hideaki Itsuno, director of Devil May Cry 5 has said: “With giving people the ability to purchase Red Orbs, it’s something we want to give people as an option. If they want to save time and just want to get all the stuff at once, those people can do that. But on the other hand, I don’t feel you have to get all the moves. You should be able to play it the way you want to play it.”

The Worst Kind Of Purchase!

For many, this type of microtransaction reflects the worst kind in a game. Rather than being aesthetic alternations, this outright gives you the option to ‘boost’ your character and make progression in the game much simpler. It bypasses the ‘grind’ aspect by offering it to you on a plate, albeit for a price!

I can’t see this going down well with fans though. It’s an insertion that is clearly manufactured and entirely unnecessary to the game!

Devil May Cry 5 will release on March 8th 2019. The real question is though, do you even want this any more?

What do you think? – Let us know in the comments!

Star Wars: A New Hope – The Anime!

Star Wars is a franchise that has certainly seen it’s fair share of the animation treatment. Between the earlier cartoon series such as ‘Droids’ to the more recent ‘The Rebel Wars’ many would actually argue that animation has been a generally stronger outing for the franchise as a whole. Well, when compared to episodes 1-3 at least.

As an anime though, Star Wars does make a lot of sense. As such, it’s perhaps no surprise that Russian animator Dmitry Grozov has taken it upon himself to create a trailer for the first Star Wars movie as if it was a Japanese anime series.

Capturing All The Big Moments

The trailer referred to as ‘animotion’ covers all of the main iconic points of the original film while remarkably working exceptionally well as if it was a trailer for a feature-length production. Just to be clear, and to stop you getting your hopes up, this isn’t a full-length adaptation. It is, however, a remarkable showcase of his talents as an animator.

70’s-80’s Anime

The style used in the animation is very reminiscent of that used in Japan between the 70’s and late 80’s. Any fan of anime will notice the similarities here with programs such as ‘Fist of the North Star’ or ‘Akira’. Incidentally, if you haven’t watched either of them, you really should!

The video can be watched in full above and I think you have to admit, regardless of if you’re a fan of Star Wars or Anime, the work that has gone into it is clearly very impressive!

Google Celebrates 20 Years By Looking To The Future

If you ever needed another reminder at exactly how old you are, then hearing that Google has just turned 20-years old might help! Yes, it all started from humble beginnings when an upstart search engine wanted to oust the near-total dominance of Yahoo. In the 20 years that has followed, we’ve seen Yahoo condemned to obscurity and other search engines such as Ask Jeeves (who?!) completely obliterated.

In a report via TheStar, while Google is clearly celebrating this landmark, they are also, via a conference, looking to emphasise their role in the future.

Looking To The Future!

Google found it’s initial success by, ironically, offering much less than their competitors. Unlike Yahoo who had a news-laden front page, Google simply asked what you wanted to search for. It was a move that proved hugely popular. Since then Google has been able to utilise their popularity to generator a lot of money. A significant portion of which has been invested in various technologies including mapping the worlds streets and AI development.

Google's Guetzli JPEG Encoder Shrinks Sizes Up to 35% With Little Quality Loss

Concerns Over Privacy

While Google is clearly one of the biggest companies in the world now, there are concerns over how they operate. Specifically, that their parent company (Alphabet) places more emphasis on a good turn-over that it does in protecting the identity of their users.

The grounds of their future business plans are a matter of some concern for their employees. Specifically their work with the US Military and, of course, their planned (and heavily censored) China launch.

For the foreseeable future though, despite those 20 years passing, there is very little to suggest they won’t be celebrating again in 40. Then again, in the tech world, the next big thing is always just around the corner!

Phoenix Wright Trilogy Is Heading To The PC And Consoles!

The chances are that while you might be aware of all the memes surrounding Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney, you probably haven’t actually played the games. In fairness, it’s a boat that many are in. To date, while the games have proven to be very popular they have only largely seen a very limited release on Nintendo’s handheld consoles.

Well, the good news is that you’re about to get the perfect chance to try them out for yourself. Following the release of an announcement trailer. The Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney trilogy is officially heading to PC and consoles!

What Are The Games About?

In a nutshell, the game puts you in the place of an Attorney. During a court hearing, you must look for contradictions in the evidence and apply pressure questions to get the right result for your client. All of which is done in a heavily sensationalised and over the top style. Trust me, you’ll be screaming OBJECTION! within 10 minutes of playing it!

When Is It Out?

Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney will release for the PC, Xbox One, PS4 and Nintendo Switch in Early 2019. Sadly, we don’t have an exact release date for this, but honestly, I’m so amazed this is coming I’m not going to grumble.

I have honestly been waiting for ages to try this out. Now that we’re getting it, and better still the entire trilogy, this has just jumped high on my list of priorities for 2019!

Comcast Agrees The Purchase Of UK’s Sky TV

You may not have been aware of it, but companies such as Fox and Sky have effectively been accepting bids over the last 6-months for their purchase. With Rupert Murdoch owning a significant portion of Sky, it was believed for a while that he was in pole position to complete a takeover. There were, however, more than a few concerns over this creating too much of a media monopoly. This was a significant factor in Fox being recently sold to Disney.

Well, any chance of a deal has now officially been squashed as in a report via CNET, US Broadcasting network Comcast has had a bid accepted for the Sky TV company.

How Much?

The deal has said to have been agreed for a figure in the region of £29.7BN. While this will, of course, be a matter of interest for UK customers, specifically if there will be any changes, for the moment Comcast are remaining quiet until the deal is done and the ink has dried. In terms of TV providers though, we are at an interesting point. With Disney, Netflix, Amazon and now Comcast, there are several major businesses in the market. Each of which is clearly going to want your business!

Sky Is A Great Purchase, But Probably Not For The Reason You Think?

While Sky is one of the UK’s biggest subscription-based TV providers, there is a major factor in the purchase that many probably won’t have thought of. Specifically, Premier League football. Although Amazon does have some moderate rights to broadcast games, Sky has the motherlode. As such, Comcast can enjoy now access to one of the worlds most popular sporting leagues.

All most Sky customers will care about though is if their prices are about to go up or not!

Telltale Games Shutdown Adds Uncertainty To The Walking Dead

Last Friday we were hit with the thunderbolt news that TellTale Games, creators of the highly popular Walking Dead and Wolf Among Us would be shutting down. While the fans and the industry, in general, are rather shocked at this news, I must admit, I predicted this would happen around a year ago. With a new CEO and staff layoffs last September-November, it was pretty clear that they were suffering from some cash-flow problems.

Since the announcement though, there is a matter that is hugely unclear. Namely, whether TellTale Games will finish their final season of The Walking Dead. Well, the voice actress for Clementine has spoken and I’m afraid it doesn’t sound good!

As you might be aware, the final season was released about a month ago with the next episode set to land tomorrow. It seems though that whether TT Games plan to complete the series or not is, genuinely, uncertain. It almost seems unthinkable, but the series might actually end on just the 2nd episode out of 5!

Nothing Is Certain

At the moment, absolutely nothing is certain. It is honestly no exaggeration to say that we have absolutely no idea whether the final season will be completed or not. While it has been confirmed that a ‘Minecraft’ Netflix series will be finished, TT Games has been remarkably vague as to The Walking Dead. Like, really vague to the point that even they haven’t made their mind up!

All the reports to date have been contradictory. It’s, therefore, best to say that at this precise moment, no one knows!

Telltale Games shutting down is sad. Them closing without putting an end to their greatest series would, however, almost be criminal!

Elgato Thunderbolt 3 Mini Dock Review

Having a portable computer is awesome, in most cases. You can take it with you everywhere and do what do you do with it there and then. However, when you get back home again, you might want to hook up all your stationary devices, from monitors to storage and input devices. That can be a hassle with all those cables, that is unless you have a docking station. And that is what I have in the office for a test today. Elgato’s new Thunderbolt 3 Mini Dock.

Thunderbolt 3 Mini Dock

Elgato’s Thunderbolt 3 Mini Dock targets the people who need extra connectors for their portable system and those who do not want to connect every single cable individually. But, as the name suggests, this Mini Dock doesn’t offer a lot of different connectors such as full-sized docking stations do. If you need that, then you might want to look at the previously released Elgato Thunderbolt 3 docking station.

While we don’t get a lot of connectors, we do get some important ones. There are two ports for monitors, which both support 4K at 60Hz, a USB port, and an RJ45 network port. While that doesn’t sound like a lot, it will suffice for a lot of people out there.

Portable computers, whether they’re a Mac Book or a Windows-based PC, get smaller and smaller. Consumers demand a light and portable solution, and manufacturers oblige that demand. However, the shrinking of size does demand some compromises. There simply isn’t room for as many connectors as there are on thicker systems. A good example is the RJ45 LAN port. It is quite high when compared to other ports such as USB and monitor connectors, which can be a problem for thin notebooks. They solely rely on wireless networking which might not be optimal at all times.

Thunderbolt 3 Makes it Possible

With a docking station, you can avoid all this trouble and still enjoy all the connectivity. Especially when your system is equipped with a Thunderbolt 3 port. Thunderbolt 3 offers 40 Gbps bandwidth which is enough to drive a whole lot of devices. For comparison, USB 3.1 Gen.1 (USB 3.0) only offers 5 Gbps bandwidth.

So, the Elgato Thunderbolt 3 Mini Dock is hooked up to a 40 Gbps ports. With 1Gbps for the networking and 5Gbps for the USB port, there’s still 34Gbps left for the two monitor connections. A single 4K 60Hz output only requires 14.85Gbps which means that there’s plenty to spare to run both without bottlenecks, while you use everything else too. That’s how a docking station should be!

As Good on-the-Go as It Is at Home

Elgato’s Thunderbolt 3 Mini Dock is as useful when you’re on the go as it is at home. The docking station is both small and lightweight enough to take anywhere. It only measures 10.5 by 5.7 cm and it’s 2.5cm thin. The weight comes in at a tiny 125 grammes.

The short, built-in cable is another convenience factor when you take it with you. There’s no chance that you misplace or forget the connection cable anywhere. Thanks to the unit being bus-powered, there’s no need to carry bulky or heavy power supplies either.

There can be multiple reasons why you would want to take your docking station with you when you’re out and about. The most common reason will be that your system simply lacks the ports you need. But there are other reasons too. Whatever they might be, the Thunderbolt 3 Mini Dock from Elgato will be great.

Connection Options

I’ve more or less covered the connection options in the paragraphs above, but it can’t hurt to summarise them here.  The host port is a Thunderbolt 3 40Gbps with built-in USB-C cable. The cable has a length of just 12cm which can be an issue if your ports are located on the screen part of your laptop. Some 2-in-1 devices have a setup like that as the keyboard part is removable. Just something to remember.

Among the four device ports are a DisplayPort and an HDMI port which both support 4K at 60Hz. The HDMI port is HDCP compliant too for the situations where that’s needed. If you’d rather have smoother motion over image detail? Then that’s no problem either. Thunderbolt 3 Mini Dock handles refresh rates up to 144 Hz just as easily.

Besides the monitor connectors, there’s also a USB 3.1 Gen.1 (5Gbps) Type-A port and an RJ45 port with support for Gigabit Ethernet. Naturally, the Ethernet port is backwards compatible with 10 and 100 Mbps networking.

The Physical Design

There really isn’t a lot to say to the design. What you see is what you get. A sleek, space grey enclosure that fits in the palm of your hand. The rounded edges and slightly curved sides give it a great look and feel, while the colour matches that of a lot of systems, including the grey MacBook Pro.

Feature Highlights

  • Single 40Gbps Thunderbolt 3 connection
  • DisplayPort with 4K 60Hz
  • HDMI Port with 4K 60Hz
  • USB 3.1 Gen.1 (USB 3.0)
  • Gigabit Ethernet
  • Lightweight, small, and built-in cable

Package and Accessories

The packaging isn’t a lot larger than the docking station itself, because there’s no need for any more. Since the connector cable is built-in and it doesn’t require a power supply, there only needs to be room for the docking station itself.

The front displays the unit itself and the name, but not a lot more.

The rear side shows and describes all the available ports and system requirements. Everything you’ll want to know about such a device.

Since the cable is built-in and there is no need for an external power supply, the Thunderbolt 3 Mini Dock doesn’t come with a whole lot of accessories. There’s a small booklet with “important safety instructions” and a leaflet with the download link to the Mac OS software.
