A cynic might say that Sony has lost its bottle over its all-female Ghostbusters reboot due to the news, broken by Deadline earlier today, that the studio is also producing a companion film with a 100% male group of Ghostbusters, because we’ve never seen that before.
The new movie, titled Ghostcorps, is being produced by original alumni Dan Aykroyd and Ivan Reitman, directed by Captain America: The Winter Soldier helmers the Russo Brothers, and penned by Drew Pearce, writer of Iron Man 3. Channing Tatum is co-producing, with Sony hoping that he will also star.
The move is hardly a show of faith in Paul Feig’s forthcoming Ghostbusters film, which entered pre-production last month. There was a predictable misogynistic murmur of uproar when the female-dominated cast, including Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy, was announced, and, rightly or wrongly, the timing of the Ghostcorps reveal feels like Sony is pandering to those dissenting voices; a bold move now undermined by cowardice.
