Ubisoft is no stranger to the occasional slating, but they’ve gone one further this time by upsetting For Honor players with a cash grab. Since the games release, and this isn’t exactly surprising from Ubisoft, there have been numerous bugs from the beta that just haven’t been fixed.
This, however, doesn’t seem to be what has got some players raging under their chain mail. After a redditor did some calculating, it appears what has most players angry, is the amount of money they would have to spend to unlock the cosmetic items.
Whilst these items are just cosmetic and have no bearing on the game itself, it does show how micro transactions are filtering into every game, and how profitable they are. The willingness of the player-base to invest in their characters has game developers throwing in additional costs where ever they can.
As pointed out in the reddit post;
“The average hero requires around 91500 steel to unlock all base games (no DLC/Update content) unlocks. This includes Emotes, Executions, Effects, Outfits, and Ornaments. From there, you multiply by 12 (for each hero) and get 1,098,000. That is approximately 7.32 of the $100 steel packs. So Ubisoft has valued their in-game unlocks within the base game at a $732 over-charge of the original $60-100 spent on the game.”
For a game that isn’t F2P, that is a massive amount of additional money, and it’s highly unlikely anyone would spend that much on cosmetic items. However, this isn’t where it ends. There’s also the question of gear.
Gearing works as usual, with your character getting more powerful with each gear upgrade. There is a problem, though, gear can be bought with real money, you buy steel, you use the steel to buy gear packs. This is essentially making a game you’ve paid to play, also pay to win.
This leaves casual players in a very sticky spot, and it Ubisoft has completely divided their customers. There will be those who can afford to buy better gear and therefore be more powerful, and then there will be those who can’t, and will undoubtedly have a very tough time against P2W players.
It will be interesting to see how Ubisoft handle this, or if they’re just hoping people will flood them with money and wait for it all to blow over.
Do you play For Honor? Have you come across any P2W players? How uneven, if at all, was your battle?
