Former Nintendo President Declares the Console War Over, Warns of Industry Stagnation
Former Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aimé believes that the console war is over, at least in the traditional sense we once knew.
In a recent interview with The Game Business (thanks DualShockers), Fils-Aimé discussed several topics, offering his own thoughts on the current state of the gaming market, which he says looks very different today or is at least transforming compared to the classic competitive dynamics.
A major change lies in the relationship between the three main console makers, leading Fils-Aimé to argue that the console war has indeed come to an end.
A New Era in Console Gaming
The most significant change in today’s landscape is clearly Xbox’s new approach. In this generation, Microsoft has opened up to competition, bringing many of its games to other platforms — including PlayStation.
According to Fils-Aimé, Xbox has essentially become “a big third-party publisher that also makes some hardware.” This shift means Microsoft is no longer directly competing with Sony to win over players in the same way it used to.
However, this change could lead to negative consequences, such as market stagnation and a lack of innovation, which could ultimately harm players.
Why Competition Still Matters
Reggie Fils-Aimé believes that healthy competition is what keeps the video game industry creative and forward-thinking. He feels that when companies challenge each other, players benefit through better ideas and experiences.
However, he’s concerned that lately there’s been less real innovation — fewer new and exciting types of games appearing. He hopes developers continue to push boundaries so the industry doesn’t become stale.
Not long ago, GameStop jokingly declared the end of the console war after the announcement of Halo for PS5.
