Former Warner Bros. Games Director Says He Warned Against Releasing The Lord of the Rings: War in the North Alongside Skyrim
The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition arrived by surprise this week, bringing back one of the most loved games based on the work of J.R.R. Tolkien. The original game did not enjoy much success at the time, and one of Warner Bros.’ top executives back then is clear about the reason: competition with Skyrim.
Following the announcement of this new edition of the Lord of the Rings game, Christian Allen, former director at Warner Bros. Games, posted a message on X celebrating its return while also pointing out that he had always been against the release date chosen for the original game.
“15 years ago I argued vociferously not to release this up against Skyrim, as it wouldn’t get a fair shake. I got overruled.” Allen also described the arrival of the new edition as “great.”
The Lord of the Rings: War in the North Had Little Marketing and Had to Compete With Skyrim
After posting the message, Allen spoke with several fans on the social network. He explained that he was only part of the management team at the time and gave all the credit for the game to Snowblind, whose work has now been brought back by Aspyr.
The original game arrived shortly before the iconic The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and according to Allen, War in the North received very little marketing. This made its difficult situation alongside Bethesda’s game even worse.
Allen also believes the game was probably released at that time because Warner Bros. needed it to arrive during that fiscal period. “Quarterly revenue motivations drive more decisions than people realize.”
This is something that can often be seen in the industry, with more and more games being rushed out to meet deadlines when another two or three months of development could have resulted in a much more complete experience.
