Over Power Protection and Max Wattage

Although this is rated to 860 watts, which should be more than enough for the vast majority of the high-end gaming PC market it is always important to know that protections are in place to ensure that your power supply may not potentially cause any damage in the case of it being asked to delivery too much.

So, what did we learn? Well, firstly that the overpower protections in place for the power supply work. In addition, however, it was able to draw over 300 watts above the rated amount before these came into place. Given that this is nearly 40% over the rated value, this is clearly very impressive.

Of course, it’s never ideal to consistently ask your power supply to work beyond its means. The Fractal Design Ion+ 860, however, clearly shows that if asked, it will oblige.
