Fractal Design Node 304 Mini-ITX PC Chassis Review

I’ve said it a few times in recent months that the Mini-ITX form factor is getting better and better and the Node 304 just further reinforces my belief. As seen in our build section it may not be the most practical solution in terms of space for our components, but it has an overall style that really makes this chassis stand out.

While I’m confident you could fit a competent gaming system into this chassis, I’m not so sure that’s really its true purpose. If you get the right mix of graphics card and power supply so not to cause any conflicts you won’t have any issues. Just remember that modular PSU cables will get in the way of any cards longer than something like a GTX 650. But please check the spec sheet of both this chassis and your graphics card to ensure compatibility before purchase. That being said, the non modular PSU we used in our tests meant we had more than enough room for the GTX 560 Ti, which is a pretty large dual socket graphics card. This did however leave us with a lot of unused cables from the PSU that had to be crammed tightly into one of the corners of the chassis.

There are no options here for optical drives either, I know some will see this as a vital component and it may put them off purchasing the Node 304. But I on average use my DVD drive 1 a month at the most these days, things like installing your operating system can be done via USB with ease and is in most cases a lot faster than from a DVD-ROM. If you’re not using this as your main system, the USB install solution is a great alternative. Having no optical drive bay also helps with the overall style of the chassis, leaving the front panel smooth and stylish. This clean look is one of my favourite features of the Node 304 and it would make a great looking addition to any home cinema system as a HTPC.

It’s also nice to see high quality stock fans being installed and with no room for additional fans its good to see some extra love and attention has gone to providing high quality airflow capabilities within the chassis, while also using the kind of low RPM fans that keep noise to a minimum.

Small form factor computers are also well suited to those with limited desk or office space, being capable of fitting a high spec system into a small space is very appealing to a lot of people and only goes to show how flexible this form factor can be for day to day use.

The Node 304 is certainly one of the best looking M-ITX chassis on the market today, I can see a lot of people buying this simply because of its overall design with little care for its component compatibility. While it may not be the cheapest chassis in this category, with an average price tag of around £70-80. But for your money you do get unmatched style and rock solid build quality, which is why I am awarding the Node 304 with our Editors Choice Award.
