Framework Criticizes Dell and Apple for High RAM Prices, Says “We Won’t Gouge Customers”
The growing frustration over RAM prices is not only affecting regular users but also reaching some tech companies. One of them is Framework, which has openly criticized larger industry players.
Framework Confirms It Will Raise Laptop Prices — But Without Scamming Customers
Earlier this week, Dell was called out on social media for its pricing policy regarding laptops. The company began offering models with more RAM at a much higher price, even compared to other brands like Apple.
This did not go unnoticed by users or by companies such as Framework. It all started from a (now deleted) post by Max Tech (thanks Toms’s Hardware), expressing disappointment with Dell’s memory pricing. The post showed a Dell XPS laptop with a Snapdragon X Plus and 16 GB of RAM. However, upgrading to 32 GB of RAM required an additional $550, a steep increase by any standard.
This price jump is even higher than that of premium brands like Apple, which charges $400 for the same upgrade, highlighting the ongoing issue of RAM scarcity.
Framework Offers Fairer RAM Upgrade Prices
Currently, if you check Dell’s website, the price increase is “only” $150, which might explain why the YouTuber’s original post was removed. It’s possible that the earlier higher price included other configuration upgrades.
Despite the situation, Framework confirmed that although it will raise its laptop prices slightly, its RAM upgrade options will remain far more affordable. Specifically, the company listed the following prices:
- DDR5 5600 – 8 GB (+$40)
- DDR5 5600 – 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) (+$80)
- DDR5 5600 – 16 GB (1 x 16 GB) (+$80)
- DDR5 5600 – 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) (+$160)
Although these prices represent an increase, they are much more reasonable than those of other manufacturers. Framework made it clear that it does not intend to pass the full burden of rising component costs onto customers, emphasizing that it won’t use this as an excuse to scam buyers.
