Frostbite Technical Director Wants DirectX 12 as a Requirement for 2016 Holiday Games

DirectX 12 is almost here and big name gaming companies already want to have it as a requirement for their next games. Frostbite’s technical director, Johan Andersson, is one of the people who expressed interest to have DirectX 12, Windows 10 and WDDM 2.0 as minimum requirements for the Holiday 2016 Frostbite-powered games.

Andersson believes that gamers will take advantage of the free upgrade from Windows 7 and 8 to Windows 10 that will be available during the first year, having the move be the decisive turning point for the company to make the decision of switching to DirectX 12 as a requirement.

The technical director appears to have also hinted at some engine upgrades done recently, which we will probably see in future games that are about to be released. We might even see the new upgrades in the Star Wars: Battlefront title that will be released later this year.

Frostbite clearly indicated that it is one of the game companies to embrace DirectX 12 once it rolls out. If the company truly makes the latter technology a requirement, we might be looking at Mass Effect 4 or even Battlefield 5 as strong candidates that will be shipped with DirectX 12 support during the 2016 holiday.
