G.Skill introduce Phoenix Blade PCIe SSD

G.Skill is most known for their memory modules, but they’ve ventured into the SSD area before. This time however it takes on a new shape and reached speeds any enthusiast would love. The new G.Skill Phoenix Blade PCIe SSD is on the horizon, and it looks great.

By using the PCIe Gen 2.0 x8 interface and four LSI SF-2281 SSD controllers in RAID0 setup, the Phoenix Blade can reach some amazing transfer speeds of up to 2000 MB/s. That is easily 4 times that of normal SATA based SSDs. The drive also performs an almost insane 245K IOPS at 4KB random writes, this should speed up any task from graphic editing to HD multimedia content creation software and gaming.

Data storage and transfer speed aren’t the only two factors to take into consideration, protection is another key factor. The Phenix Blade PCIe SSD has CRC data protection to prevent IO corruption. By implementing BCH ECC with up to 55 bits per sector and RAID-5-like data protection, flash cell errors and block failures should be a thing of the past.

Besides the obligatory SMART and TRIM functions, the drive also supports SCSI UNMAP and is backed by a 3-year limited warranty and full technical support.

While it might be tempting to plug this card in right next to your graphics card, or maybe even between a multi-GPU setup, you need to be careful with this. The Phoenix Blade is rated for an operating temperature between zero and 55 degrees. While your system shouldn’t be running that hot under normal circumstances, it’s a thing to keep in mind. One wouldn’t want their precious new high-speed SSD to get damaged.

There isn’t any word on pricing or availability yet, but we’ll keep you informed on the subject.
