GAINWARD Releasing Overclocked GTX 1070 Ti?

Recently, there’s been some confused messaging regarding the GTX 1070 Ti’s overclocking capabilities. We reported that NVIDIA’s new card is incapable of being overclocked. However, further developments revealed this as only partly true. It soon emerged that NVIDIA is locking factory overclocking of the 1070 Ti, though the company still branded the card an overclocker’s dream. Presumably, this means that consumer overclocking is viable. Nevertheless, as AIB partners announced their own GTX 1070 Ti cards, this also appeared less than true. Zotac, particularly, is preparing their own overclocked 1070 Tis. In addition, it seems at least one more partner card is sporting factory overclocking. A few days ago, we revealed two forthcoming GeForce GTX 1070 Ti card from GAINWARD. However, VideoCardz reports GAINWARD is launching a third 1070 Ti, and it’s factory overclocked.

GAINWARD Overclocked GTX 1070 Ti

In a Chinese graphic (via VideoCardz), GAINWARD confirms a GameSoul GTX 1070 Ti overclocked by around 11%. At such speeds, you’d assume the 1070 Ti would outmuscle a reference GTX 1080. However, GAINWARD’s own 3DMare Fire Strike Extreme scores say otherwise.

As VideoCardz reports:

“According to the chart from Gainward’s GameSoul GTX 1070 Ti product page, overclocked GTX 1070 Ti (running at clock speeds ~11% higher than stock) will still be slower than GeForce GTX 1080, at least in 3DMark Fire Strike Extreme. If true, then this is very interesting because one would think that GTX 1070 Ti with 188 MHz higher clock would easily outperform reference GTX 1080.

Well, this is not the case, at least not with Gainward card. Is the bottleneck coming from different memory technology (GDDR5 / GDDR5X), or is there something else? It appears that both GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 have the same default power limits (180W up to 217W), so it’s not TDP.

Hopefully, overclocking will be the key part to understanding the purpose of GTX 1070 Ti on the market. Just a few more days for full reviews.”
