Gearbox Head Says True Fans Will Pay $80 or More for Borderlands 4
According to Randy Pitchford, the head of Gearbox Interactive, true fans will buy Borderlands 4 even if it costs $80, assuming that is the final price of the game (which hasn’t been confirmed yet).
The fourth installment in the Borderlands series is set to release on September 12 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S, but the price is still unknown. With the price of some Nintendo Switch 2 games going up to $80 and Xbox raising their prices, many are speculating about what the cost of Borderlands 4 will be.
True Fans Will Pay $80 or More for Borderlands 4, Randy Pitchford
In response to a fan on social media asking if Borderlands 4 would be sold for $80, Pitchford said, It’s not his decision to make. However, he added that true fans of the Borderlands franchise would find a way to buy the game, no matter the price. To support his point, he mentioned that Starflight for Sega Genesis was sold for $80 back in 1991, and he had to save money from working at an ice cream shop to afford it.
“If you’re a real fan, you’ll find a way to make it happen,” Pitchford wrote. “My local game store had Starflight for Sega Genesis for $80 in 1991 when I was just out of high school working minimum wage at an ice cream parlor in Pismo Beach and I found a way to make it happen.”
Naturally, Pitchford’s post received some negative responses. Many Borderlands fans criticized him for trying to gatekeep the fandom, pointing out the financial struggles people face in many parts of the world, making it even harder to afford a $80 game.
Given the impressive sales of the Borderlands series, there will definitely be fans willing to pay any price for the next chapter. But the question remains whether this will be enough to guarantee the game’s success.
