Ghost of Yotei Will Be Better Than Ghost of Tsushima, Says Former Sony Exec
Former PlayStation boss Shuhei Yoshida has revealed that Ghost of Yotei, the much-anticipated game from Sucker Punch, will be better than Ghost of Tsushima. This information comes from the French site PlayStation Inside.
Yoshida Talks About Ghost of Yotei
Shuhei Yoshida was asked if there is a specific formula to make Western games successful in Japan, particularly referring to Ghost of Yotei. Yoshida said he doesn’t know if there is a real recipe for success. However, in his view, developers “must understand Japan and its culture,” especially for games set in the country and focused on its history.
Yoshida shared that for Ghost of Tsushima, Sucker Punch worked “extensively with a Japanese producer at SIE” and collaborated with a Japanese team at the studio. This was key in making sure the ideas were respectful of Japanese culture. Yoshida also mentioned that Sucker Punch visited Tsushima Island to learn about its history and culture, which helped bring the unique atmosphere of the island to the game, especially with the “wind system.” Ghost of Tsushima even helped increase tourism to the island, although there were some negative consequences recently.
To sell a game set in Japan to Japanese players, Yoshida emphasized that developers must understand the country as a whole.
Yoshida’s Confidence in Ghost of Yotei
Yoshida concluded by saying that he has played Ghost of Yotei in several stages of its development. Having also played Ghost of Tsushima, he is confident that the new game “will be even better” and that Sucker Punch has hit the mark once again.
